Its a VERY BAD day for me....

I had to have my big dog Otis put to sleep. Those of you who had been out to my house know that for as big and mean as he looked Otis was just a big SWEETHEART. Otis had been fighting an ongoing Staph infection since June. Surgeries, treatments, antibiotics, homeopathic meds, shots I gave him twice a week to boost his immune system and make him less sensitive to the staph...nothing worked. It was ravaging his body and while my head tells me I did the right thing, it is my heart that is BREAKING. He couldn't get up and down on the couch or bed without help, he was losing weight, I was giving him baths daily to try and cut the amount of staph on his skin...while I was discussing if there were any more options available for me to do (there weren't) He laid that great big ol' head of his in my lap, looked me right in the eyes and gave a big sigh that said "I tried, you tried, but enough's enough mom!" So I laid down on the floor with him and held him and petted his chest as he left...

Anyway, here's a couple of shots of the big lug for those of you that remember him and thanks for letting me vent.

Sorry Nina. He was a great dog. I am a big fan of the small and big dog pair and you had it. I hope things are going ok otherwise :).

Nina, I'm so sorry but I'm glad you were able to be there with him - Otis is now playing in a field with the many friends that I have had the pleasure of having in my life. I know that some day we will all get to toss a ball or curl up on a couch together. It's what keeps me going.

Arkansas if fine, the weather is warming up quickly...I am glad Otis has time to be a country dog for a while...chasing the deer and turkey that turned up in the yard daily. He never tired of that game. He and Moose were quite a pair...when anyone saw that 18 pounder bossing around Otis at 130 pounds they just couldn't believe it.

So sorry Nina... :( Good by Otis, you big lug! I'm glad you got to live the country life at the end of your long journey. May you have lots of creatures to chase in heaven...

Amen Jeni, sorry Nina I know how you feel. They just don't stay around long enough and it's so hard to say goodbye...

Thank you to all...Yeah, he liked to have his chest rubbed best. When I got him out of the shelter he weighed 75lbs and had no hair from chin to tail on his belly. When I finally got him healthy and his hair grew back his favorite thing in the whole wide world was to get his chest rubbed...he would use that big paw if your hand was anywhere near him and pull it to his chest.

Yes, I got to lay next to him and hold him as the vet injected him...like I said, in my head I know I did the right thing...it's just that right now my heart is hurting so bad that it wishes I would have put if off for a couple of more weeks...but he would have been suffering...I miss him.

I'm sorry for your loss as well.
It's never easy, they are like a part of the family.
As hard as it seems right now Just think about all the good times.
