OT Godfather
Sooo, yeah I found my Hippo Tang...he was chillin in the overflow for the past 3-5 months!!!! I had checked in there before and hadn't seen him, just luckily caught a glimpse of him while doing my check. I got him out and he's doing awesome....it must have been the Rod's food that kept him alive!!!!.....poor lil fella....

thanks man....yeah it's crazy....i thought he was long gone, and the crazy thing about it is, he was still fat, happy, and stupid ;)
the little guy is only about the size of a quarter, i still can't believe he made it, i hope he hasn't gone nuts in his solitary confinement!

When ever my purple firfish goes MIA that is the first place I look. It took me about 3 or 4 weeks the first time to find him. I thought for sure he was a goner, then one day something caught my eye moving in there, back into the tank he went, like nothing ever happened. A week later he was back in there. I have pulled him out of there 3 or 4 times, but I think he learned, it's been a couple of months since i've had to fish him out.

Just read your post and made me look for my missing clown and yep he was in the overflow for about 2 months so just wanted to say thanks
Dan

I tried raising a few of those in my aquapod (I said raising...not keeping) they kept disappearing on me and I thought it was my purple lobster...it turned out to be the same things...they jumped into the back!

omg, I've been missing a couple of blue damsels since i started my tank up.... I have a AGA megaflow on the tank, is that what you guys have? I have a painted back so how would I know if they were in there?

Tony, Okay that's it..... Who's calling the Tang police!

I've had two or three of my Wrasse and Blenny end up in the sump and finally covered my overflows! It amazes me that they live through it all!

Congratulations on your find! :D

Boyd

Embryoguy - you got the tang police after me! lol
Daniel - no problem, looks like 2 lives were saved!
Glue stick - first I try looking through the top with a flashlight, then if you have access i try with a flashlight through the bottom. I ended up having to turn off the pumps and pull the pipes, let him flush down with a net to catch him underneath. (Not sure how others have tried, i was unable to catch him with a net through the top)
Boyd - THANKS!

OMG, that's wild. It's amazing how these things can survive like that.... Of course, fish have been around since before the dinosaurs!

I'd like to make some sort of cover for the overflow to help reduce this issue. Anyone out there make something to cover their overflow?

There are meshes similar to the one that boyd posted here locally.. I know that rosattis pizza puts a plastic mesh under their pizzas as well as a few other pizza joints around here, There is also a mesh screening available at wal-mart in the craft section.

Have any of you heard of using a solid cover that doesn't let light in? I've heard people wanting to do that to prevent growth in the overflow, I found aptasia growing in mine during the "rescue mission" ;)

After I had a mystery wrasse go into the overflow I went to Home Depot and bought the plastic Gutter Guard. This is the plastic mesh used to keep leaves and sticks from clogging your gutters. Worked well, but make sure you clean then every couple of months - mine started to grow algae and blocked some of the drain capacity of the overflow teeth.

I still have plenty so if anyone wants some let me know.

Yeah, you call that mesh screening 'plastic canvas' and find it in the needlework area. glues and cuts real easily. You usually have to ask a clerk for it: it's shopliftable, and difficult to rack, so it's often in some nook.

Lol! A hippo tang is the LAST fish I'd expect to find hale and healthy in the overflow!

Congrats to you and him!

Yep, I ordered a 12 x 12 sheet of black acrylic from Mc Master and then used a dremel to cut the acrylic to match the contours of the AGA overflow. I think the acrylic was $10 shipped to my house. Works great and no more nuissance algae.
