I have been wondering when someone would come out with LED fixtures for fish tanks. The only downside is, just like all LED products the up front cost is outragous even though you save money in the long run due to lower energy costs and not having to replace bulbs as often. At these prices it really isn't feasible to jump right in to this new technology, IMOP but I can really see it being the wave of the future if they light output is what they claim it is. I work in an industry that uses LED as a main light source and many products are sold that claim high level output comparable to neon, and fluorescents but never delivers. Many LED manuf. are just recently producing high light output white LEDS so hopefully this company is using those instead of older versions.
If you end up getting one let me know how it works out for you.
I agree, at that price I will wait for others to test the lights, prove the claims and reduce the price to realistic hobbyist levels. Of course, if PFO wants me to verify their claims, I would be happy to "test" a unit and give them honest, documented feedback - LOL!
LED life is listed at 50,000 hours, even at 12 hours a day that's still over 11 years! I guess if you figure you spend $60 - $100 on one MH bulb each year the price isn't so outrageous, but you know it will come down as others jump in.
Please keep in mind that LED are like christmas tree lights. To achieve the brightness they are touting there has to be several individual LED's installed in these units and they are normally linked together. When one goes out it generally makes the entire unit fail and you have to check each LED to find out which one is bad.
I don't mean to sound like a downer regarding this new product as I have been very excited about the idea so I look forward to reading first hand experiences with this application.
I'd have to sell my whole tank and left and right Arms to get the one I want. But then I wouldn't have a tank to light or arms to setup the lights! LOL
