Hey I have a brand new Iwaki MD55RLT Japanese pump and it sounds like someone is mowing my lawn in the living room?

Is there a way to silence this thing? PLease help?

I have a Reeflo Tarpon No its not dead silent but very quiet for a high head pump Not sure what your requirement is, but form what I have read the Reeflo blowhole is dead silent.

I went with the Iwaki and it seems too loud. Is there anyway to silence it?

Its brand new, and I was about to go with the Reeflo

That is funny:) Had a MD55RLT run for many years no problem with noise. Once cabinet closed ---quite.

Its amazing the amoun of subjectivity with noise in this hobby.

While I have not owned an iwaki, I can say that the reeflo tarpon is nowhere near silent. I could hear it throughout my basement, mostly the motor mounted fan. Reeflo has a new line of pumps out.....the blowholes....that are based on Hydronic heating circulatory that are supposed to be silent. Most all circulators I have heard are silent, and they are adjustable as well so I would look into those.

Well im interested in seeing peoples responses who have used both. I am in the middle of a build and purchased an iwaki MD55RLT just because I've heard it has less noise than others.

Really Your MD55RLT is silent? Mine seems like you can hear the fan really loud. Its just loud. Do you use any kind of soundproofing?

The quietest IWaki's are the one's without a fan, I think 30 series and smaller & even those aren't silent. When you get to the 40 series.... you hear them mostly due to the fan & the 55/70/100's do make noise, no way I would put one in my house. They were great 20 years ago but to me it's old technology.....

Is there a reason you need such a powerful high head pump?

Possibly using a rubber mat under the pump & the flexible PVC would help with the noise... but it will still be there.

Thanks Viggen. I am new to the aquarium world. So I had my LFS people set up my tank and they said this was the best pump out there and they are old so I don't think they can hear that well anyway, so its probably not that loud to them anyway.

But I have a 240 gallon tank. They said I needed this pump. Could I have gone smaller?

I will try a rubber mat under it but it doesn't vibrate its like just loud, like a vacuum sound.

You have a big tank, what pump do use?

Iwakis have a great reputation for being workhorses that work flawlessly (when properly maintained) for years and years.

Use and Iwaki 100 on my system and have for about 6years , no issues but it is loud. Mine is in the basement .

Ya they are great pumps and don't die. But there so loud. Does anyone on here use soundproofing like inside their cabinets?
