iwaki 40rlxt 1200gph or a dc pump equal to that pump just running circulation any big savings in electric or more less pros or cons of each
I am running the iwaki for 13 years now starting to rust a little bit thought when i move the tank updating to a new pump ?

I ran an Iwaki for more than 10 years on my 75 g. It worked flawlessly, but the loud hum it made was not pleasant. I redid this tank with a custom lifereef sump and skimmer and the noise is vastly less - not very audible unless the stand door is open. This setup uses mag 9.5 for.the return and a sicce 5.0 for.the skimmer. I have a DC pump on my new 150g build and it is also very nearly silent. As for power usage, I can't really make a definitive comment. I believe that the DC pump moves much more water for the power it uses, but don't have the data to support this statement. I like the quiet and ability to adjust the flow in a DC pump and would use it even if it used slightly more power...

My Iwaki has rust all over the case but the motor, impeller, and bearings are flawless.

Like the others, my Iwaki is quite corroded on the outside (much paint has flaked off) but it still runs as when it was new. Similarly, there are several Iwaki pumps > 10 years old in my frog facility at UCI that are still running flawlessly.

Not at all unusual to get 20 years out of these things. Wonder how many plastic DC pumps would be required to last that long? Operating cost savings are quickly consumed with pump replacement costs. Just sayin ....
