Moondoggy. It might be dinoflagellates if you lost a fish. Diatoms usually are like a fine dusting over everything. If the stuff you have is floating off the substrate or seeming to trap bubbles you may have cyanobacteria (aka red slime algae) or dinoflagellates. With a fish dying, it may prove to be dino's.

That's the side effect of drinking too much beer at the Asparagus Festival, then coming home and doing tank chores ;)


Reminds me of an old thread who's title was something like "Fed my fish some banana". The guy gave his trigger banana (the fish probably thought it was a finger or thumb) and was arguing that fish probably eat fruit since they live around tropical islands and there are hurricanes and what not... pretty funny stuff.

LOL ... wait a minute I just did a search and see that Paul B feeds his moorish idol banana?!?! What's going on here ?! :lol:

Jacob, it is funny because that was me :rolleyes:

I used to feed my moorish Idol bananas. I used to mix it with Plaster of Paris to get calcium into the fish. He loved it as much as sponge. :D

I diden't want to give you guys at NVR too much information, you may have thrown me out the door, and I liked the place.

I generally don't mention the bananas and especially the Plaster.
 
Just an update, diatoms are slowly going away. The water is clearing up some too (been a little green).


I started treating my QT with Chloroquine phosphate this past weekend and so far all fish seem to be ok. It could be coincidence but that first day after medicating they seemed to get a little jumpy and aggressive. At feeding time one of my b/fly fish came almost completely out the water and the wrasses were darting around so fast I could barely see them. Whatever that was all about seems to have passed.

Stopped by Jake's house the other day. All I can say is WOW!!!! Dude its looking mighty nice! Good job sir :)

Also, thanks for sharing the info on the Herbie. It makes sense now seeing it in person.
 
Thanks bbl_nk another good read. It is more of a dusting but I did see one spot that had bubbles in it. I blast it with my turkey baster, but it always comes back. I have increased by Eco Phos and I will increase my carbon also. My skimmer seems to be operating correctly.
 
Paul, love the plaster bananas....that's classic! Gets them potassium to boot! Have a question, will drywall joint compound work?!?! LOL

Ryan, I agree about the herbie. Jacob's writeup and info is spot on and so easy....once you see a good pick. Just sounds confusing. I had to play with mine to find the sweet spot and after a few months....I think I just nailed it.

Actually, no.

I did not invent that by the way. It was an old way to make food.
But it works, especially for fish that chew on coral like parrot fish and butterfly fish. I forgot the exact recipe but if you mix Plaster, just before it sets up hard you mix in bananas, vitamins and anything else you want to feed them, then it will not fully harden but get to a type of clay consistancy. The fish love it.

Don't you guys know all of this stuff? :lol:

Any of you NVR guys still using these?

Yep everyday for spot feeding,blowing gunk off rocks,or just ****ing my dam damsel off filling in his caves, he has built a nest under my rocks and got to say he keeps it cleaned out sand goes every where except in his cave.
 
Jake, after reading your blog and update. I have finally realized how much dang science trial/error goes into this hobby. For reals I think I've learned more on RC and researching things in depth then I have in my past few classes at school! Thank you for the blogs you guys post. It puts so much insight on a vast array of things :)

Paul- that is one very versatile tool! Thank you once again for bringing them with you to our meeting. :) I seriously have found use for them in different multiple ways.
 
I may need to ask a favor of someone. If there's anyone around who is proficient in working with PVC and doesn't mind being in a crawl space for an hour or two please shoot me a PM.
 
Jacob i have been know to do pretty well with PVC and i need an excuse to drive to Stockton and see your tank anyways. I play with pipes for a living. Usually a lot bigger but i have a lot of experience .
