Jadette's 140g Rimless Build Thread

I had this issue with my tank when I was using RC on my 40 gallon. One could imagine the big swings in alk one would get from doing a 5 gallon water change on a 40 gallon tank weekly. You should consider switching to D&D salt. It's alk is much lower than RC or IO and also closer to where I personally like my Alk (8) and calcium (430~).

I love your tank and enjoy reading your thread. Informative, inspirational and funny. Can't beat that combination!

My two bits on the water change/alk stability issue, after having struggled with the same issue: I use ESV Salt. Alkalinity is a separate component so I can set it at exactly my tank alk level and not have to worry about even the slightest swing when I do a water chance. It is more expensive than other brands, but I think its worth it. You might want to consider it.

Art

Thanks on the suggestions Justin and Art! I've fiddled with different salts before with mixed results. I used D&D successfully before in my previous tank. Just read up on ESV and it is certainly something different! I'm half tempted to try a new salt again, but not now. I just picked up some butterflies that are being a bit nippy with my corals. Polyps are a bit retracted on some colonies. Would like for that to settle down a bit before I try something new with my tank. I don't want to blame the salt when it's the butterflies or vice versa. One thing I like to do is blame other people/things for my failures, so it'll be nice if I can narrow down the possibilities when it's time for me to blame something else for my tank crash!

Yay!

Decided to split my update into three posts b/c I thought my mega-posts in the past were too verbose and giving people headaches to read. But now I feel like I'm just spamming my own thread.

Oh well.

So I wanted to say that I'm getting rather bored with my tank. I thought getting new fish would put excitement back into my reefing career, but it has not made the impact that I was anticipating.

I was getting all excited about my recent discovery of pectinias, but even they have rather been a disappointment for me.

So yesterday, I was sitting in front of my tank with a sigh of indifference, when my ignitus male flashed in front of me. His cheeks turned a rosy pink, and his top fin flared a blood red. He was gorgeous.

Then it all came back to me.

Anthias.

I just love anthias. I was putting all my recent efforts into the wrong fish.

Must....buy...more...anthias....

I did pick up a pair of females. They're still in QT right now and will be ready for my DT in a week. I'm hoping the borb will behave with the new additions.

Love your tank. Any updates?

Thanks! yes, it's been a while since I updated my tank thread. Main reason being that I have been so busy at work, that I've had little time to even sleep, let alone take care of my tank, let alone post about how I don't have time to take care of my tank.

Thankfully, I am not updating to say that my tank crashed b/c of my neglect. But neither can I say that I am coming out of this reefing hiatus unscathed.

I picked up a few frags at some meets earlier in the year with bits of weird algae on the plugs. Fearing that it would spread all over my tank, I removed what I could and put the frags in my frag setup in my sump. This wasn't exactly the smartest idea, but I honestly was too tired to care (read above on the lack of sleep). Fast forward a few months and my entire frag tank was covered with the stuff. It smothered all of my frags. I managed to keep it from doing much harm in my display area b/c I would always remove bits of it whenever I saw some, but I do not look in my sump very often. Even when I did, and saw the green stuff growing, I had little energy to deal with it. In retrospect, I should have done SOMETHING, b/c all my of expensive corals were actually in the sump. It's my whole mentality of not wanting to keep frags in my main display, so I usually would grow out the frags a bit before putting them in the display. Thing is, you don't usually see purple monsters, pearlberries, and alien eye pectinia colonies for sale. Yes, I did lose frags of those and many others that pains me to mention.

There are also a few other stupid things that I did. I was too lazy to fiddle with my doser when my alk/calc needs went up (blame my CA+ sucking clam. The guy is a monster), so I decided to just make a more concentrated solution. The tubing didn't really appreciate that much and got clogged up. I didn't really notice that til 2 weeks later, when it was time to refill my dosing containers and saw that they were still full.

I also have some funky fish disease in my tank that killed all of my tangs and butterflies. My beautiful, beautiful, butterflies that cost me more than the tank itself. Fortunately for me, I've been too busy to think about restocking. All of my wrasses, cardinals, and anthias survived. I have one lone swallowtail left. I still have about ~ 20 fish in my tank. Going to keep it at that # for awhile to let the 'funk' go away on its own. Yes, I am allowed to dream. It's America, dang it!

But on to the positive stuff. Things in my tank are growing well. I bought a large green acropora colony that was at the brink of death for a steal of a price (the cost of two big mac meals), and it has bounced back nicely. Nice green body with teal polyps! There was a large dead spot in the middle that I could not bear to look at so I stuck pieces of my cali tort in it. Haha. Came out pretty interesting looking. Ok, it actually looks pretty gawdy, but better than having the look of death on it.

Ok. Less talky, more showy:

See the green acro colony with the cali tort growing in the center on the left side of the tank?

Close up of the left side of the tank with the Calc sucking Squamosa:

And the right side:

Sideviews (you can see the weird nuisance algae growing on the return and vortechs):

Fish are all hiding b/c I was cleaning the glass for the pics. Either that or I'm too ashamed to admit that they're all dead.

ALL DEAD I tell you!

Not really. I just get weird when I'm tired. And I'm always tired. :(

For all those SFVR peeps reading this, sorry for being MIA on all the recent meets. I've been busy being busy and complaining about being busy. :(

Looks great Shirley. I'm having a algae issue as well. I have been dosing vodka and seems to help. Still waiting till its allll gone before I hold a meeting here at my house. We just had a meeting yesterday that was very helpful. We now have a few more board members. Dave (o2manyfish) will be vp. Lawrence will membership coordinator. Kinggeorge will help with sponsors.... were comming along. :-) you don't wana miss August 3rd meeting/frag swap at daves house. (Meeting is before the swap)

Did you give up on zeovit? Risking the cali tort... Yes it looks good having 2 corals growing together but your call. We all get lazy with reefing. I almost got out of the hobby myself recently but still eEveryday I check my basics(usually). All pumps working and I have effluient/co2 bubbles. I dose liquid carbon and I check when I can to verify dosing pump is working properly. It's too easy to become dependent on technology.

I love your tank btw!

Post on the algae forum and see what type of algae that is. Worst algae I had was diactus (sp). Algae that thrives in pristine water and no tang would touch it.

Oohhhh... Frag swap! Sounds like a lot of fun. Who's house? Will we be meeting at unique corals or the SPS store again?

you are my idol, all i do is copy from you to my tank lol..ur tank look so beautiful

Haha. Hopefully, you're learning from my mistakes too. Because I sure do make a lot of them!

I kinda sorta gave up on zeovit. I still dose, but not religiously. Surprisingly, the product I liked the most was the Coral Snow. My tank clarity was quite remarkable after dosing. Also helped me battle the little cyano outbreak I had after the initial dosing. I think their products are good for the right reef enthusiast, but I was just not disciplined enough to continue its usage in an effective way. I was always happy with my coral colors. I wanted to get better growth, and I was hoping the zeovit method would help me achieve this.

Every tank is different, but for me, the #1 contributor to coloring up my SPS corals in my tank is getting the right lighting. I do not think I will be retiring my metal halides anytime soon. Because of the summer heat, I've reduced my metal halides on time from 5.5 hours to 4 hours with no ill effects so far. LEDs are on for 12 hours. Ambient temp in my house right now is 78F, and my tank temp with MHs on right now is a stable 80F.

I tested the aggressiveness of the green, wild acro colony against my cali tort and there was no coral warfare. I made sure I did this test before making the insertion more permanent. If one grows much faster than the other, there may be issues in the future, but otherwise, it should be okay. My cali tort grows very fast for me. In fact, I have frags of it in several places in my tank. It's a coral that doesn't grow for the first year in my tank, and then out of the blue, will take off. The same for my bennett tort (which looks almost identical to my cali in color, but grows out in a different pattern).

I probably should get the algae ID'd. I googled diactus algae, but didn't really get any hits. The stuff seems to only take a hold on plastic - thus its presence on my return and my pumps. This is why it went crazy all over my frags, b/c of the egg crate. Fortunately, 90% of my live rock is covered in zoas or encrusted corals, so there's really little space for algae to take hold in my tank. I'm hoping that now that my sump is completely clean of the stuff (i had to throw out EVERYTHING), I can just clean off my return and pumps and be done with the stuff.

I don't know what's up with the photobucket pictures I posted. Everything looks really washed out compared to the originals I have. Maybe I should switch over to flickr.

Silly Lawrence. I have no idea why you feel responsible for my fish deaths. I didn't get it from your fish or anything from your tank!

I think my luck with angels is rubbing on you
With butterflies

Its funny that I can keep 60 wrasses and 50
Anthias without problem but I can keep
Large angel long term :(

Looks great, some of those corals look very familiar.
Who built the tank, and where did you buy it? I missed that information.
Glad all is well,
Marc

I'm going to wait a bit and see how things play before adding another tang or butterfly in my tank. My male swallowtail looks to be doing fine. Hope he doesn't lose his balls in the absence of a female and go all drag queen on me.

Haven't heard an update on your cube tank in awhile. Hope all is well?

Thanks Marc! Yes, I still have the corals I got from you. They have been heavily fragged and distributed. I believe have the SFVR folks have your blue-tipped pink milli :)

I took some more shots today with the pumps off this time.

I am slowly developing an appreciation of non-SPS corals. I just ordered another torch, frogspawn, and bubble coral to add to my tank. Here's a pic of my miami hurricane which I have had for about 3 years now?

And here's my coral within a coral close-up:

Here's a funny pic. I am actually quite anal about coral placement (if you've been following my thread, you will know this). While doing maintenance one day, I temporarily stuck some random 1/4" millie frag behind my ponape birdsnest rock. I forgot to remove it, and after 9 months or so, it grew enough to peep out behind the rock. I hate where it's growing, and I want to remove it, but it has encrusted so nicely on the rock, that I would basically have to butcher it to get it out. Still don't know what to do with it at this point outside of posting a pic of it!

Rainbow stylo peeping out behind my clam. Growing slowly, but surely:

See the green monti cap in the back? I've broken the colony many times into specifically sized pieces and remounted them to create the background shape that I wanted from it. Screw the natural look! I went with the control-freak reefer look:

My baby red goniopora is all grown up now. *sniff*:

I am a bit peeved that the colors on the photos I have hosted on photobucket are coming out so muted.

Shirley. your tank is inspiring.

As for the 1/4" miili nub growing out where you don't like it, if only those problems happened to me! I am one of the people who got lucky enough to get the blue tip pink milli and it is a very pretty coral. It is stable with good PE but it has not grown and tips have not gone blue. But like I said, it is stable and its same color as when I received it from you at CFM in Feb. I am ditching the Radion that I am currently using and going T5 (arrives today, yes!) so hopefully it will respond better to the new sun.

The rainbow stylo looks great. Another one that doesn't like the radion. Has lost a lot of color so hoping it will also like t5 more. I still want to be first in line when you frag your stylo. Definitely one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing Shirley

I'm the other person that got the milli... it browned out on me during my crash. So now its in daves outdoor frag tank :-) there's nothing better than the sun for coloring up stuff
