Holy Alk Spike Batman!
Holy Alk Spike Batman!
I usually ask my LFS to pick up the more uncommon fish for me, like the randalls. They are often seen at wholesalers, but not at fish stores. There are certain folks that make wholesaler runs once every other week or so. I sometimes purchase through them. I used to get my anthias through lotsafishiesdotcom.
Here's the masago(capelin roe) section of my local asian supermarket.

So I recently switched over to a Ca+ reactor instead of dosing. Things were going well and I do believe I was seeing faster growth and better polyp extension. And then my CO2 tank went empty right at the busiest point for me at work. I let 3 weeks go by without refilling it - thinking I could get by with just Kalk dosing in the meantime. Corals were still doing fine, but when I checked my Alk, it had dropped down to 4 dKH!
Finally got around to refilling my CO2 tank. Two weeks later, I noticed that my corals had not so great PE. Took a closer look at things and saw that my CO2 tank was always on. My solenoid was stuck open!
Measured my alkalinity and it was at 15 dKH! Surprisingly, livestock was all okay. Pretty much unphased outside of a few corals not looking as fuzzy as before (that could also be b/c of my regal angel).
So this whole experience taught me a valuable lesson. When in doubt, go buy something expensive.

I just spent 2 hours reading your thread and it was definitely worth it. The school of anthias is by far my favorite. A few questions if you don't mind.
Where did you purchase the Randalls anthias?
Do you have a pic of the Capelin roe container? Not sure what to look for in the Asian supermarket.
Thanks and awesome job Shirley!!
