Holy Alk Spike Batman!

Holy Alk Spike Batman!

I just spent 2 hours reading your thread and it was definitely worth it. The school of anthias is by far my favorite. A few questions if you don't mind.
Where did you purchase the Randalls anthias?
Do you have a pic of the Capelin roe container? Not sure what to look for in the Asian supermarket.
Thanks and awesome job Shirley!!

I usually ask my LFS to pick up the more uncommon fish for me, like the randalls. They are often seen at wholesalers, but not at fish stores. There are certain folks that make wholesaler runs once every other week or so. I sometimes purchase through them. I used to get my anthias through lotsafishiesdotcom.

Here's the masago(capelin roe) section of my local asian supermarket.

So I recently switched over to a Ca+ reactor instead of dosing. Things were going well and I do believe I was seeing faster growth and better polyp extension. And then my CO2 tank went empty right at the busiest point for me at work. I let 3 weeks go by without refilling it - thinking I could get by with just Kalk dosing in the meantime. Corals were still doing fine, but when I checked my Alk, it had dropped down to 4 dKH!
Finally got around to refilling my CO2 tank. Two weeks later, I noticed that my corals had not so great PE. Took a closer look at things and saw that my CO2 tank was always on. My solenoid was stuck open!
Measured my alkalinity and it was at 15 dKH! Surprisingly, livestock was all okay. Pretty much unphased outside of a few corals not looking as fuzzy as before (that could also be b/c of my regal angel).

So this whole experience taught me a valuable lesson. When in doubt, go buy something expensive.

Wow... alk at 15??? If you had my experience i just had i think i woulda cried more for your tank than mine!
As of right now my tanks empty and sparkling clean. I goin to rebuild my sump and looking for a larger submersiable pump in the 1600-2200 gph range and build a manifold ect... Dave told me to hurry up and get my tank back up before my parents notice a drop in power consumption lol...

So impressive. Btw Shirley, I purchased 3 emeralds from reeftopia and they don't touch the bubble algae :(

How long have you had them? And what are they eating instead? I want to say that maybe you're overfeeding, but I know that's not true since I don't believe anyone this side of the Mississippi feeds more than I do and the crabs still ate the bubble algae in my tank. Give it time. Else I'll have to just give you the ones I got! They are so HUGE that they're scary.

If my tank crashed, it would only give me an excuse to upgrade. :) I have a 5 year plan of setting up a 400g tank in the center of an enclosed patio. So many things that I did wrong with my build that I would love to just start over - Especially with my sump. Aren't you having fun replanning everything?

Nice Shirley is that a Tinkeri or roaops?

It's a burgess/tinkeri hybrid. Picked it up from PIA. Been eyeing it for weeks!

Came in a little skinny and it has a sore on its chin, but he's eating like a pig already so I hope he'll pull through!

I had a tink/burg hybrid before too, It never had issues eating ( they are pigs actually).Hopefully it does well for you. You deserved to have your butterfly.

About mid Jan. I don't see them very often but I did happen to see all 3 about 10 days ago foraging the rock picking around the BA, and I mean around the BA LOL. I feed once a day.

Never had to deal with hair algae, unless you're talking about bryopsis, in which case dosing a lot of magnesium has always worked for me.

I don't get algae on my rocks. They just don't really grow on my rocks. Probably b/c my rocks are covered in coral. I also have a crapload of emerald crabs and they do a good job of keeping everything clean.

What I do battle with every 6-9 months or so is cyano. In fact, I'm dealing with it right now. Nothing terrible. A few patches here and there on my sandbed. This is always a cue for me to replace my sandbed (which I am in the process of doing now). I've been slowly scooping out my sand for the past week, and have another week to go before most of it will be gone. Can't get cyano on my sandbed when I have no sandbed!

I don't struggle with keeping good water conditions with a high bioload, b/c I always adjust my water changing schedule accordingly. Before I introduce more fish into my tank, I make sure my tank has just gone through a 25% water change before I put the new fish in. Then I'll do a series of mini-water changes after that to make sure my tank is fine with the new bioload. I don't test for phosphates. The only thing I regularly test for is Alk. I gauge my water quality by how fast and how much film algae grows on my glass and by perusing the health of my corals and fish. Not a science, and I'm probably just full of it and am just moments away from a tank crash. The bacterial population will rapidly swell until they in turn are devoured by the Cosmic Owl...Such is the course of nature. But it's going to be a pretty sweet ride, up until that point.

On the topic of cosmic owls, check out my new tank inhabitant!

He's like a big cuddly bear in my tank. Gets along great with my regal and black tang - is reef safe (because my tinkeri hybrid has already demolished my entire zoa collection) and is eating pellets with gusto.

The only problem? My anthias are freakin afraid of him. Don't know why. He's oblivious to their existence. And now everyone is oblivious to theirs b/c they will not come out of the rocks to eat. :( It's been a week. I don't know how many are still alive. I'll see a few heads peeking out of the rocks every now and then. Hoping they'll come out soon.

Glad your bandit is doing well...

Thanks to you!

Though long term, I'm not sure if he's eating enough to keep his weight. He's not touching the mysis anymore and will only eat nori pellets and blackworms.

How are the triggers that you recently picked up?

I just want one more fish in my tank (or did I already say that before i picked up the bandit?). I either want a declivis or mitratus. I prefer the latter, but it's so difficult to find one that is fat with good coloration. PIA has a juvi declivis right now.

So tempting.

But nothing for me until the anthias come out. :(

Shirley, try the reef frenzy. Fish go nuts for it! Bandit might like it. I have an orange tail file and he wasn't eating until I gave it that. Been eating like a pig now for three to four days and hopefully his health will be at its optimum. I have an extra nano one if you want to try it.
I was going to pull the trigger on a mitratus about a month ago. I had it ready to come to me and was emailing him about it and it was eating and looked very nice. I decided to not get it and get a true Hawaiian Flame instead. I'm keeping my tank as much as possible a HI endemic tank. Message me and I will fill you in on who to call or email. Your tank is droolworthy!

my bandit was eating like a pig but one day found it dead...
the triggers are good all of the female are eating non stop and loves pellets. the male loves frozen food the boy still acclimating to tank life.

mauritius mitratus is my recommendation.. so much brighter
