Jadette's 140g Rimless Build Thread

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I hate aquascaping. Aquascaping sucks. I hate it. Did I mention I hate aquascaping?

And what's up with moving corals from a 75g tank to a 140g tank and having to break off huge chunks of my colonies just to get things to fit? That must violate at least 3 laws of physics there.

After three hours of having my hands in saltwater, moving around coral that seem to have a mind of their own, I'm tired. I'm tired of having wrinkly fingers. Tired of having my hands smell like ...like... Oh my mocking deity... I can't describe the foul stench emanating from my finger tips. But i'm posting on a reef forum, and if you're reading this, you know what I mean. And you also know that no matter how many times I just
washed my hands (which, by the way, isn't really helping my wrinkling situation), the odor still remains.

Super glue and epoxy don't exactly earn high marks in the fragrance category either. I had little success putting corals where I want them, all while resisting the temptation to just force them through areas in the live rock where the sun don't shine. I can just hear my beloved box of velcro mocking me now. "You abandon me as your adhesion of choice and this is the price you must pay!". Believe me, if I could velcro down my corals, I would... Hmm... Googling it now...

To make matters worse, my lackadaisical anemone, who must have somehow overheard me calling him lazy (okay, who ratted me out), decided to get some exercise. The bloody ingrate. I must come up with a clever way to punish him. Perhaps pinch him in random places until he splits.

Sorry for the rant. You must be extremely bored if you made it this far into my post.

this was actually the most interesting post ive ever read! lol at no point was i bored but im curious as to what type of velcro are you using i couldnt find the double sided velcro...and i couldnt find it in black...

but i dont get how you double the water volume but you run out of space where to put the corals...maybe you just have less rocks? not as much surface area?

but post some more pics! nice build by the way!

wow... you pretty much summarized my night right up until now, well maybe a little more cursing here and there. i absolutely hate switching tanks... i'm really contemplating making each rock island permanent using that drill/acrylic rod method so if i switch tanks in the future i can just remove the whole island all together.

i can't believe i completely forgot about your build thread!!

if you need any help, lmk! i definitely appreciate the deal on the light fixture, loving it so far!

I'm glad the fixture is working out for you. I know I said a lot of negative things about it, but it does put out a decent amount of light, and with the endless combination of bulbs, you can basically get the color you want from it. I initially started with 10k MH bulbs and daylight T5s, but it was much too white for my taste. I really like the purple+/blue+ combo with the 14ks.

I don't think I'm going to upgrade my tank again anytime soon. Just not practical without a fish room, and I certainly don't have that option in my current house.

Did you finish moving everything over? Thanks for the offer of help. I think I just need help with getting rid of all of my accidental frags!

I am looking forward to see this tank in person soon.

Why you would still want to see my tank after my complainin' on my last post, I have no idea! :) See ya tomorrow Lawrence!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I buy the boxes of velcro from Home Depot. They have heavy duty ones, and also clear (which is what I use mostly now).

I did reduce the amount of rock that I have in the tank, so there's not a lot of space for the corals. Also, I'm really against putting coral frags on the sandbed, so there was a lot of frags I had to get rid of (just tossed them in my sump).

Here's what I finished up with last night. Note that I AM NOT DONE!!! Still have stuff in the sump to distribute (especially some large monti caps). Also, this pic I just took now and things got knocked over. Have to secure them down perhaps later this week. Not going to move anything around today b/c I pretty much ****ed everything off in my tank yesterday so I'll be considerate and give my livestock at least a day of rest.

Notice where my anemone is sitting right now. He was in front of that large rock last night.

I've violated the rule of thirds here. I need to move the left mound a little more to the right, and make my right mound a bit smaller.

That, and I'm severely lacking in the staghorn department!

Oh well. Will fiddle with it some more some other evening.

pictures do not do this tank justice!! absolutely gorgeous in person!!

thank you again for the frags... and light... and tank... and sand... lol

Just wanted to chime in to say I think your aquascaping looks great. The stinky-pruned-fingers syndrome paid off. I also appreciate that you and your anemone have demonstrated that Murphy's Law is still in effect! :)

Great build!

Uh... Really?!
Yeah, really. My husband was really bored at work.

wrong site...lol

Your tank is looking good.
Thanks, Toan. I have your rocks drying in my backyard. I would give it another week to dry out though. It's pretty stinky!

Did the anemone move anymore?
It didn't move anymore, but I didn't like where it rested, since it was basically hiding behind a large rock pretty much in the center of the tank. Also, the clowns got really defensive and would nip at anything that swam by, so I wanted the anemone in a place with less traffic. I moved it to the back of the tank on its very own rock. It could probably double its size back there without bothering anything. I moved it there about 3 days ago and it looks like it's going to stay put. Of course, I just jinxed myself by saying that.

Hahaha!
Also call me
It's comments like these Lawrence, that make my husband feel the need to assert himself on my thread!
Totally kidding by the way.

I still have more frags for you if you go to the club meet! Also, let me know if you need more of that sand. I found another bag in my garage.
Nice chatting it up like huge reef nerds with you and Lawrence last week. Gotta post pics of your new set-up. Did you use my tank? Or was that just a spare?

Thanks! I'm still tinkering with the aquascape a bit. Hubby helped me out with the latest round of changes. I added more height to the left mound and flattened out the right mound. The right mound is still a bit too big, so I'll clean it up a bit later in the week. Here's how it looks today:

I added 5 purple queen anthias to my tank last week. Happy to report that they're all eating now and swimming out in the open. I picked up 5 small green chromis at Rainbow Pets yesterday (Thanks for the LFS recommendation Gene and Lawrence!) and they're the perfect dithering fish. I'm getting loads of activity in my tank now.

I've been lagging on finishing my LEDs. Just installed another LED bar over the weekend. Added more whites (cool and neutral), and I'm really diggin the warmth the neutral whites add. It puts out a nice pinkish glow much like the Purple+ T5 bulbs. I'm thinking about adding more.

The best part of using the warmer white LEDs is the fact that I no longer need to adjust the white balance with the white LEDs. Photos come out much nicer.
Here's two snapshots I took that I did not color correct at all.

Here's without the neutral whites:

Here's with the CREE neutral whites added:

I'm getting decent polyp extension in this setup too. Here's a pic of my acroberry with only the blue LEDs on (took down my whites b/c I have to fiddle with the dimming on them).

Can't wait to get PAR readings on everything!

WOW! your tank is looking amazing.

If your anemone ever splits would you ever consider selling the clone?

My tank is almost done cycling. Hurray!

really nice build!

Thanks! I've been following your LED build thread. How are the LEDs holding up?

Selling it to you, no. Giving it to you, yes. You did, afterall, put many hours at below minimum wage building my stand! I wouldn't hold my breath though. This sucker just grows and grows without splitting. 3 years without a split! He's really happy in the back of my tank right now. Easily stretching to 15"+ shortly after feeding. Not as bright as when he was under my MHs in my old tank, but still not too shabby in the color department under T5/LEDs. Just took a couple of snapshots today.

I'm always highlighting my corals, but I would have to say my luck in reefkeeping has been in raising the fish. Fat, healthy, and disease free. One of my favorite fishies in my tank has been my kole tang. A real sweetheart with a heart of gold. Loves chillin' with my mystery wrasse and plays nicely with the yellow tang I just picked up in the last month. Kole tangs have a bad rep b/c most people find them to be plain looking, but I think they look awesome! Beautiful eyes, interesting patterns on the body, and the gold on their tail is truly stunning. I think people don't like them b/c they're just so common and inexpensive. I honestly don't think chevron tangs look any better, yet people will drool over them b/c they're "rare". Kole tangs don't get big (so not much hassle from tang police), aren't aggressive as tangs go, and have tons of personality (at least I think mine does).

Anyhow, I recommend them to beginning and future tang lovers. Here's my lil' kole. Check out his cute freckles!

As I mentioned before, after my snorkeling trip in Kona, I fell in love with the yellow tang/kole tang/achilles tang trio. Would love to pick up an achilles tang, but I am married to a tang police officer. Maybe if I get a juvi and then throw in the 'but I'll be upgrading in a couple of years' ubiquitous excuse!

I pick up a Achilles for Clint
It's very happy with his tank and I am very jealous

It gets along with his purple tang too.

You should get one!

Oh you are too nice. I absolutely love the coloration of that Rose. Please oh please keep me in mind if for some freak reason it ever splits. Do you recall where you bought it? I've seen other one's for sale but they pale in comparison to yours.

Kole Eyes are great fish. IME, they're great at keeping the rocks algae free as well.
What other fish do you have in there? I see the 2 clowns, mystery wrasse, Kole Eye, yellow tang, athias......

The LEDs are doing just fine. I really need to do an update on them. i have been really busy with school. what i can say is that some corals colored up better and some corals actually lost some colors. there were tradeoffs, but there are no problems growing corals under LEDs that is for sure.
