Jadette's 140g Rimless Build Thread

Kenith - How is that LED setup working for you? How many LEDs did you use? Single heatsink? Pics?

Do tell! :)

I'll snap some shots tonight. Here's the setup-

36- cool white xpg
36- royal blues
6- meanwell drivers
2- ddc-01 pwm controllers
2- 23" heatsinks
custom made aluminum mount.

I can say that the xpgs are super bright. I have them turned down quite a bit as they started to bleach my corals.

Kenith -
That is awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. Do you like the dimming controllers? Are you using their daylight programming modes or just manual? Looks like the settings are pretty restricted, thus the need for me to pick up two of them to get the proper sunrise/sunset effect that I actually want.

Do you have a splashguard since your set-up is so close to the water? I'm going to put a splash guard on mine. This is hopefully what my fixture will look like when I'm done:

Love your stand too.

Nice! I like the controllers except that each controller running the rb and cw is set to only 3 programs (8, 10, and 12 hrs). Each program has a preset duration for sunrise and sunset (d3 program is 12 hrs with 1 hr sunrise, 10hrs daylight, and 1 hr sunset). The programs have preset intensities for sunrise and sunset, which are not customizable. Once it's past the initial sunrise, the intensity is set by you and is memorized by the unit. I plan on running the cw's for less time than rb in the future, which requires me run two seperate timers or two different programs.

Another option is to skip the ddc's and run da's advanced lighting controller. It will run the meanwell drivers and allow you to customize time, duration, and strength.

Yay!

Got my LEDs in from the rapidled group buy:

Also got all the pieces to build my own LED controller:

I also picked up some random pieces here and there for a DIY LED driver as well:

Probably will use the meanwell drivers for my main LED fixture and use the PT4115 drivers for the fuge/frag tank fixture.

Still waiting for some violet and red LEDs that I ordered from overseas, and then I'll be set to start on my fixture. I also picked up a variety of other blues/extremely cool white LEDs that I will mix in with the CREEs that I got from the Rapidled order. Just looking to have fun with the color combos and dimming with the controller. :)

So LeeMar finished up my tank last Friday! Will have it delivered this week - so more pics to come. Getting really anxious to set this up. Don't know about other reefers, but whenever I upgrade my tank, I end up buying more corals and cramming them in my existing tank, with the anticipation of having more space in the new tank. I've been going a bit crazy buying up stuff and now my sand bed looks like a frag rack. :( I did pick up a few very nice pieces though.

Here's how my tank looks today:

Just recently swapped out one of my ATI blues for an ATI purple, and I'm really digging the new color. Makes the orange in my anthias and clowns really pop!

Thanks Lawrence! Btw, are you still looking for mushrooms? I have about a 5" rock covered in superman mushrooms I can give you. They're not happy right now b/c I have them under a monti cap, so no light and also no dirty water for them either (I carbon dose). It's sitting on my sandbed to the left of my toadstool in the photo above. Let me know if you want them (for free of course).

Congrats! Looks great and good luck on your build. Careful with the reds, I hear they stand out a bit.

I must've missed the post above on the splash guard. I do not, but I'm gonna put one soon. I'm starting to get salt creep on the fixture and don't want to risk anything-

Mike - Looks great! Really can't wait to see the finished product. I spent all weekend long clearing out an entire room for the tank. Thanks so much again for building this for me. I didn't really like any of the standard tank stands that were offered with the tank.

Mackubb - Didn't really tally the cost of the LEDs. Not done with the complete build yet, but I'm figuring it'll run me about $1-1.2k.

Kenith - Hmm... Not sure what exactly he used, but the stand is a hybrid build with melamine on the inside and laminate on the doors and exterior.

And guess what came in today?

My new sump is actually bigger than my current display tank. I might have gotten a bit greedy with the size. Hope it fits underneath the tank. I'm hitting myself in the head wishing I went a bit smaller with the sump.

The current tank looks great. How long has it been running and how old are the corals; particularly the larger ones on the left?

The new tank's not bad either.
