JapanReef - 450 gallon In-Wall system

Great build design. I am in love with larger and taller tanks. There is so much more that can be done with them.

Welcome to JapanReef Mk2 - The Rebirth. :bum:

So it finally happened. I put everything else on hold and just knuckled down to finish the new aquascaping and to be honest I couldn't be happier. Turned out how I envisaged with tall columns, a set back look, an arch. The fish seem to be very happy.

I think first one is with halides, second flourescents.

The arch is on the left and protudes out from the right of the anenome, little bit hard to make out. But it corners off the anenome nicely. It suffered a bit in the makeover but I think it will rebound fully. It has a few small tears in its foot as it was attached to 3 large rocks so moving it was very difficult.

The male clown and Niger Trigger are in from QT. The male clown and the female Clarkii paired.....immediately. They found each other, the male went into the usual submissive dance, the female reciprocated, the male was in the anenome in about 10 minutes. Pretty incredible.

However, the female Clarki is the Spawn Of Satan. I can no longer but my hands in the tank without getting bitten like an piranha infested amazon tributary. And when I was trying to catch it yesterday with two nets it actually jumped out the water and hit me in the face. I guess it picked up on the anenome's distress and blames me.

I started on the tank covers which are simple wood frames with chicken wire. Still have to complete 2 of them but that won't take long. Stopped yesterday due to blisters. :p

I still have a few things outstanding. I want to siphon out all the old sand before I put in new stuff but this is going to take several weeks I think. Pipe is exposed here and there and needs to be concealed but you can't really see it. One of the strainers on a CL input bulkhead is exposed and needs to be covered. But with the aggressive Clarki I'm in no hurry.

Still need to hook up the new Tunze but that's simple enough. Decided against the deco rock for now.

The Hammerhead really doesn't push enough flow through all 4 outlets simultaneously so for now I have it pushing out 2 outlets left to right and the Tunze will push right to left. Also have a Dart pushing right to left. So this will do for now. When/if I add SPS I'll get another Tunze 6105.

Going to get a Calcium Reactor (finally) in the next few months. Will get one from here in Japan so I can lean on the vendor for regulator and CO2 tank info as I still have no idea where/how to sort all that over here.

Going to get 2 Potters Angels and 2 Rabbitfish next week. :)

nice to see what's going on. I know in my system, that chicken wire would be rusted out in a matter of a couple of weeks. That may cause you a problem, but you could probably find stainless somewhere. Any reason why you didn't use nylon or some other plastic material/screen?

Didn't think of the rust factor. The chicken wire is plastic coated though. I might take a look and see what other netting I can get before I finish the other two.

I like it. I'm sure your livestock likes it too.

When the Clarkii flew into your face, did that remind you of Han Solo attacking the Imperial Battleship?

Is that surface slick normal, or just something due to all the changes at the time of the pictures?

It was quite a shock, I tell ya....

Surface film is there as teh left side has very little flow at the moment. That will change when I stop reading RC and hook up the Tunze. :)

I'm so happy that the Clarkis paired right away. I was so sure the nasty female would attack the male. I really like to have fish in pairs. I only have 2 Anthias left but at least they are a pair. I intend to get 5 more soon. And the Bangais are a pair. The 3 babies are still alive although I've seen teh adults actively hunting them now. The Heni never made it through QT but when I had 2 before they seemed to be a pair and always hung out together. I'm definitely going to add fish in pairs from now.

It's also nice to see the Squamosa on the sand in its full glory rather than hidden away at the back. Looking at my tank has become a pleasure again.

So I did up the other 2 covers with nylon netting. I feel it's kind of flimsy so will be interesting to see which one lasts the longest.

So I'm looking for a battery backup unit that will power a pump for 12 hours if the power goes out. Kind of like the Vortech backup but for a CL pump or Tunze. Any ideas?

That's precisely what you need to know, how long it can run. Tunze has a small system available, and you supply your own battery. Check with Roger for the specific details in his forum here.

I used to have an APC 1500 hooked up to my 29g, and it would keep the Mag 5 running for several hours (5 or 6).

Keep in mind that a UPS is different from the IceCap Battery Backup (for Vortech pumps), which provides power at 12v all the time. With a UPS, the power stored within is then converted back to 110v / 220v for the item plugged in, and some equipment will not function correctly because of how the power comes out. It has to do with sin-waves, IIRC. A magnetic pump will surge and not handle a UPS as well as a computer's power supply -- which is what UPS units were designed for in the first place.

I have to say the IceCap BB really works very well. I got 48+ hours out of mine. I am not sure if you can get an adapter for other pumps, but the whole process of reducing output to lengthen run time is something to consider. In a power outage of any moderate length, survival is the key issue, so extended flow times at a reduced rate seems to be the best solution IMO.

Damn, LTA split. :(

Guess the stress of the move was a bit much. It was due for a split anyhow.

Congratulations on the rebirth. I was following the thread from day 1 and I am happy to see that you came back stronger that ever.

Cheers morphiii. :)

It's nice to feel the energy again. When I saw the limitations of my system coupled with teh money I was spending and needed to spend plus a 50% drop in the valuation of the AUD against the yen - it was just too much. But now things are looking up and the only real barrier is getting teh calcium reactor setup with CO2 and regulator.

I'll be getting another 6105 next week to go on the left. Two of those plus the flow of teh Hammerhead should be enough for now. It's nice to see that turbulent surface water after all this time. The Tunze magnet doesn't appear to be all that strong but there's no vibration like on the Vortechs so I don't expect it to fall off.

Aquascape is nice, fish are happy, clown has new mate, coral happy, clam looks super happy, have flow, tank is covered so won't be losing fish and I'll be adding new fish every 2 months. I couldn't be happier with how things are working out.

That's great to hear, Laurence. I know how frustrating our tanks can be, and have to imagine it is worse for you being so far from the common vendors we purchase from here in the U.S. all the time.

Wow I see what you are talking about. I love it! I may have to copy one or 2 of your island pillars. :)
