JapanReef - 450 gallon In-Wall system

So the new baby Regal Angel is doing great. It hides every time I come close but I've spied it eating flake and pellet. :)

Tomorrow I'm going to order a 4" Blue Line Angel and then I'll have my 3 prize centrepiece Angels - Emperor, Regal and a Blue Line. As you can see, I like strpy fish. :p

Also thinking about making my Centropyge crew a trio and adding a Potters. :D

I ordered the 4" Blue Line Angel (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis).

My first choice of vendor had sold their Blue Line. It was my first choice as it was only $75 but this one was $150. Still pretty good I think but then again they are endemic to this region. It's quite rare in the trade these days (at least in the US) so that adds a nice factor to having one. It will be here at 4pm tomorrow. :)

I'm only going to hypo the regal and this fish this time around. Both are expensive fish and I want to be 100% hands on and provide the best possible chance of survival as these two are on my dream wishlist. Anyhow the tank is starting to look very active now with the the current 2 tangs, 3 angels, 5 anthias, 2 butterflies, 2 clownfish, 3 gobies and 1 wrasse. Quuick recap:

1 Powder Blue
1 Yellow Tang
1 Emperor
1 Flame Angel
1 Coral Beauty
5 Lyretails
2 Heniochus
2 Clarkii Clowns
2 6-Spot Sleeper Gobies
1 Yellow Watchman Goby
1 Yellow Coris Wrasse

So 18 in there plus these next 2 will make 20. The only other fish I really want is a clown tang and a couple of mandarins. I do want to add some pink which might come in the form of some other anthias of royal gramma harem.

Make sure that the clown tang is the LAST fish added to the tank. It will terrorize any newcomers. Otherwise, it's a very cool fish--I've had mine for about 2 years.

Yep, it's last on my list and I'll get a baby.

Laurence, what I would recommend is to set up a quarantine tank with normal parameters and just observe, feed, and care for your new fish. Do the normal water changes to maintain good water parameters. Then, if you see the fish develop a disease like ich, you can begin hypo-salinity treatment.

I don't see the point of putting a newly acquired and stressed fish through hypo the day it arrives. It may be the straw that broke the camel's back. :(

Im with Marc on that.

My quarantine is essentially a reefsetup...without corals, but lots of rocks and sand. I have found fish seem to fair a great dela better in this tank than ina sterile system. Should they need hypo, thats easy, just lower the SG. If treatments look necessary, they get treated in the same system.

Its just a small tank always used as a quarantine, so no big deal if i treat the rock at the same time as the fish.

Paul.

I usually wait for a week before starting hypo. I've had teh little Regal a week now and I do see him scratching on the sides of pipe. Doesn't neccessarily mean Ich but...

So I got the little guy today and while I cleaned the tank I gave him a Formalin bath for 45 minutes. I also got the Blue Line today and gave him a Formalin bath and I'm now drip acclimatising it. I think a Formalin bath for all new arrivals will be part of my new regimen and I really do think my QT technique offers new fish a great chance of survival.

Beautiful fish, looks really healthy too. I would have expected it to look a little pale from shipping stress, but it looks great right out of the box!
Are you going to QT it with the regal? Are you worried about them getting along in a smaller QT tank?
I'm sure you know that you'll have to start the regal's QT over if you put the new fish in the same tank.

It is really healthy. Good colur and also not thin at all. I put him in the quarantine tank and fed flake and spectrum pellets and he seemed to eat the pellet straight away. Here he is in the quarantine tank:

I didn't start hypo on the Regal yet as I was hoping to get this fish.

Beautiful angel! I love bluelines. They are rockstars!

Also, your formalin baths before adding the fish to quarantine, are definitely gonna benifit your fish. This is a great prior quarantine dip. We do one more formalin dip - prior to the fishes release into the main exhibit when they are very strong and eating well as a last precautionary.

I read up on the Formalin and I have a hard time understanding why dipping fish in formaldehyde is beneficial. Am I missing something? How does it work?

Formalin is a good dip for Euronema- ( very common on newly imported fish and is very deadly), flukes, trematodes, turbellarian, and ick spors which infect the fish a bit slower. All can be very deadly and deserve the right treatments if they arrise.

I recommend to people to either give there fish a 10 min. freshwater dip or a formalin bath before QT as long as the fish is in good shape. Even though dips can be stressful, it is very benificial.

I wonder if Formalin can kill Ich? I mean really kill it. Would be great to give fish 3 dips over a week rather than 6 weeks QT.

I gave each fish a 45 minute dip. Two teaspoons per gallon. The fish didn't seem to blink.

I might actually not do hypo this time but I'm scared as hell. Up till now I've enjoyed 18 Ich-free fish due to my stringent QT measures. Steve Pro did mention in an article that Formalin was effective against Ich but will it kill it outright?
