Jason's 220 build

So, my MP40w ES(Just turned 2yo) just crapped out. Not a huge deal, no coral. Appears that the wet side screw or nut has stripped. Ecotech says buy a new wet side lol! And here I was about to go with a Vectra because of the supposed great support they provide.

Hopefully it's just the nut. I have 100 of those coming via Amazon for $10. Shame no local hardware stores seem to carry them.

Not sure what to do now in regards to Ecotech. They had a great reputation for customer service. It does appear you can get some level of individual replacement parts for the MP10 and MP60 but not the 40. At least I have some time to decide!
Etm use to carry all the parts until the switch to qd. Lots less moving parts now. No plastic bolt/nut to overtighten. You might be able to find a rebuild kit somewhere. Ya $75 is a lot for a new wetside though.

Yeah, I get that, but they don't even have individual parts for the qd series listed for the 40. I don't want to have to spring for a $75 wet side every 2 years on a pump that already costs $350 lol!

Well, the new nylon nuts worked. For about 30 min's lol! I think the ceramic sleeve has worn down. Was getting too much play/wiggle even with the nuts as tight as reasonably possible. New wet side is on the way. Still not a very happy camper though.

Leak test is complete! Now waiting for the storm to blow over here in Orlando and maybe I can get this bad boy drilled this weekend!

Original plan had been to drill a side panel for the overflow. When I made the template though the holes were, to me, too close to the edge of the panel. I went ahead and drilled them on the back wall and will shift the tank to a different wall in my non-work home office.

To my wife's credit, she asked if it would affect the auto water changes. She knows how much I hate lugging buckets. I'll have to change which wall I drill a couple small holes through to the garage but, at the end of the day, I still just have to drill a couple of holes through to the garage lol!

All's well that ends well.

The allure of LED's is still strong with me. I calculated bulb and electrical costs for a year and bulbs and the extra electricity alone cover the cost of one Kessil AP700 per year. I'm thinking I'll buy two now(meaning Black Friday if they have a deal or later if they don't) and a third when they either announce its replacement/upgrade or when I start putting corals that need the extra light. Whichever comes first. Torn on this one. I KNOW MH and T5 will provide great lighting. I figure I can also add 4 T5's down the road as well if there's shadowing that I have to deal with. A 4 bulb retro doesn't cost that much.

A shame there isn't an easy button in reefing!

Plan is to have the tank on the stand this week and start leveling it.

Got the back painted. And then like an idiot laid it on its side again to clean it. So, little touch up work to do.

Have friends coming over tomorrow and hope to get it on the stand then. We'll, I better as I don't know the next time I'll have 4 or 5 other grown men over to help!

Thanks!

nice set up .. Cant wait to see more pics

Thanks, probably won't make too much progress until Black Friday. Hoping to get a deal on lights, powerheads, return, something lol!

I've gone back to putting the refugium in the garage. I'll build a stand over the hot water heaters and use a stock tank as the fuge. Figure a 50 gallon will be more than adequate. I'll need to run a supply to the fuge and 2 returns from it. Will also put a float valve and possibly the Apex LDM as well to kill whatever pump I use to supply it to keep it from overflowing. The idea is to have the fuge gravity feed the display. If it gets too hot in the summer I'll get a chiller but I think it'll be fine. So, might get pics of that up in a week or two.

Looks great. Trying to learn while I plan for my in wall build

Thanks, very slow going. Can't commit too much $ until my job status is certain and that should be resolved early next year.

I did get an early start on Black Friday. Drs Foster and Smith had a 25% off coupon that worked on a Kessil AP700 so I picked up one of the two that I'll need. It doesn't get me any closer to getting water in the tank but it saves me a ton of $$$. This is the 2nd time I've seen a 25% off coupon at Drs F&S so I'm hopeful another will pop up in a few months if/when I'm ready to buy the next one. Truthfully, it'll be a while before I'd need a second one anyway.

If it would have worked, I would have bought an MP60 or Vectra M1 lol! But still, Merry Christmas to me!

Nice build. [emoji106]. I know it's hard to go slow with these projects but sometimes the money makes our decisions. Lol. Good luck & im excited to see the final look. Good job.

Thanks! We learned that it's worth it to be patient and try to buy once, cry once lol! It's paid off in the long run. If I was the only one we had to buy Christmas presents for the tank would have water by Jan 1 lol! Kids take priority though. Of course, I say the having just spent over $700 on me lol! 1st world problems.

The first AP700 has arrived. Now my wife gets to wrap it up for Christmas. She also got me a Flipper cleaner as a stocking stuffer.

I had originally planned on getting the return on BF but there weren't any deals on any of the returns or powerheads that I was interested in other than the WAVs and I'm still not sold on a pair of them over an MP60 and my current MP40. So I'll be patient and look for something after Christmas. Once I pick a return I can lay out the plumbing!

What flow is your modular marine overflow rated for? I was going to go with the synergy 20", but they are now only making a 16". Debating now on a modular marine or exotic marine toothless. I like exotic marines 35". This would be for my upcoming 200g build.

Mine was a custom size. 22" toothless so probably about 2400gph. Plan had been to mount it peninsula style. What I get for ordering it before test fitting the tank in the room. It'll still be adequate, but I do wish I had a wider one now.

Nice build thread, enjoying the progress. I have always loved the 220's dimensions. Having had a 110 tall I won't be missing the reach to the bottom of the tank though. Can't wait to see what's next.

Thanks, and yeah, reaching the bottom is a pain. I had to climb inside it to clean it! I like the extra height and volume though. In a perfect world, corals should really be able to have some vertical growth. Hopefully I'm up to the task.

I did finally pick up a return pump today. Found a Sicce Syncra 5 locally, and in great shape too, for $50. Couldn't pass it up and, worst case, it'll become my backup if I don't really like it.

Also considering just getting a plastic tote from HD or Lowes as my refugium. All it needs to do is hold water and have a flat enough surface to put a couple of bulkheads in for the drain.

Easy solution is to just put it in the stand, with a little shelf if necessary, and have it gravity drain back into the return section of the sump. I do have the idea of mounting it up high in a closet in the same room and having it drain directly to the tank. Do that many pods really die though due to the return pump to make it worth the effort?

The bonus of putting the fuge in the closet is that I can have some things like the calc reactor, AWC, and ATO on the other side of the wall in the garage and not have to run lines for each into the main room where the tank is. I'd still have a supply to the fuge and two returns to run from and to the tank/stand.
