how deep of a sand bed so they need i have only about an inch or so is that good enough

They're going to need about 3-4 inches, and you need to have stable rock---ie, so they don't undermine it and cause a rockslide. They're not too bad about that, but it is worth considering.
If you decide to deepen your sandbed, you can do that, but you need to do it over time---you can lower a few glassfuls of washed, wet new sand into your tank and gingerly spread it in various spots, doing a few glassfuls a week until you have it the way you like. That way you won't have cloudiness or a mini-cycle---a little algae growth, maybe, but nothing bad.
