JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Sci_Man SF

Not sure of source (or how/process) the LFS gets its frags. The recent casualty has started losing tissue from its base. Yes, Ive dipped in iodine during my actlimation period.

Perhaps I should look at easier SPS to gain confidence.

Interesting is that I do have a monti frag that appears to still be alive; however it bleached 2 weeks after I got it (same LFS).

Skimmer Died !

As if Im not having enough problems these days....

I've got the Saphire skimmer and its stopped (motor), so took it apart to clean and nothing, luckily I ordered a spare motor, right?

I plugged in spare motor but its not making any bubbles... THis will be my second 'fix' to this thing since May of this year ---

Anyone have another suggestion for skimmer that would fit into the center chamber on our JBJ 28g nano ?

Tried that.

Took whole thing apart and soked in vinegar, blow thru tubing, etc.... No bubbles!

Anyone know if the TUnze TZ5311 skimmer will fit in the center chamber ?

Well after two years had to break down and get a chiller. I am so hard headed should have done it before wasting money on fans etc to keep my JBJ 28g Nano Cube cool.
Seemed like the first year I could keep it somewhat cool but not this summer for some reason. Learned a hard lesson by losing two of my sps corals. Yes again I am hard headed, thought I could save money.

Was lucky to find the JBJ Mini-Arctica Chiller w/ Digital Controller 1/15HP at Hello Lights and they price matched it at 309.
Now my question is what size power head do I need to get for the chiller. I want to get it before the chiller gets here so I can be up and running.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

MJ 1200 on mine :)

hppd432: Do you have updated pics of your tank please? I saved your thread from nano reef dot com but its not been updated since jan of this year. :D Yours is one of the best looking examples of this tank, so pretty please for an updated photo? Must have changed a lot since beggining of this year. Also, how did you find the Phoenix 14K long term? I ordered one from the USA after reading yor thread. I really like it as it looks better than the stock bulb.

The Tunze 9002 which is the 5311 nano will fit (tightly). Many other use it on thier jbj's and get great results. Check out the reviews before you make a decision, I believe most are good.

I have the CPR Remora. The pump is in the center chamber, and the skimmer discharges into the right chamber. This is without any pump mods but it works for me. The Remora has been easy to maintain to far; it's been in there about 6 months.

I spoke (email) with Saphire they have redesigned the impeller/wheel to prevent it from stalling and are in production now, should be next week before ready - mean time, Ive managed to super glue the old impeller (which was spinning freely from the magnet) and skimmer seems to be working (butnot 100%).

hppd432 - Ditto on the Maxi 1200 for chiller. I've actually got my 1200 pulling water into chiller, then phosban reactor, then refugium and has plenty of flow (plus I saved a lot of space by not needing so many pumps).

May have found solutoin to SPS problem in my tank...

I was over onthe SPS Forum and a user recommended checking for stray voltage. Here's what I found:

I got home and grabbed my cheapo digital meter and could not believe the reading I got. So I took my other two meters... Same thing!

Sticking one probe into tank and one to good ground and I was getting 40.0 volts! Yikes... Thats not mili or micro volts either thats 40 volts... But I would figure that should be felt by the human hand when touching the water in the tank - So I grounded myself and stuck my hand in the tank --- Nothing, couldnt feel a thing

But still I was reading 40 volts (yes Forty Volts) - Picked up a Grounding Probe and now down to 0.012

Now my concern is I've got 4 pumps, heater, chiller, and various probes for my Profilux Controller --- Which one is causing this high of voltage? Should I investigate it or just leave it now that I've got the probe?

Thanks boodlefish - I hope this was the issue with my tank and SPS...

Anyone else have problems with the Sapphire skimmer putting bubbles into the tank? I've tried putting filter floss in the chambers next to it, but it doesn't help (only get bubbles when skimmer is on). Could have spent $140 on something better for the tank this thing.

Hey Jon,

I'm not seeing an bubbles on mine - can you narrow down where they are coming from? You might have to pull the unit out and run it in your sink so you can see the bottom while it is running. Might be something as simple as the pump not being connected tight to the bottom of the unit

balloonpilot: I would investigate what is causing the stay voltage. Easiest way to do this is to unplug all the electrical items then connect each one in turn whilst measuring to check for detection of any voltage. I'm glad tha at least you are getting somewhere with this. Keep us updated as to whether you find out which item was causing the problem and also how any new SPS frag does.

My plan for this eve is to strip the tank down and add one item at a time back.

I did the opposite last night - unplugging one at at time but this did not yield the culprit which could mean more than one device is causing the voltage.

I also read (lost link) a theory that if one adds a Ground Probe, this will provide the voltage a path to ground which will increase the current in the tank making the voltage (which without a ground has zero or low current) more damaging.

I hope I can just find the 'bad device' and remove it...
