Is anyone running a sump/fuge on a JBJ28 that is NOT a hang on back? I want to do this without drilling the display tank.

Thanks.

Yes I have a 5gal fuge on a shelf above my tank. Its a tight fit but I crammed a pump under the media rack. water is pumped up to the fuge and gravity feed back down to the rear chaimbers. It works really well.

I counted about 6-7 fishes, whats the exact number? What skimmer do you have? How long has your tank been running? What are your nitrate/phosphate reading? Do you run a fuge? Do you rn purigen/chemi-pure?

- Sorry for the load of questions...I want to work out what fish load I can get upto on this tank without causing excess nutrient buildup.

yes, i have 6 fish
im not running a skimmer, the YCG's are in there temparaly until i re-set up my pico... its been having problems. once the YCG's are gone, then im getting a jawfish, dont know what type, then that may be it.

No skimmer, planning to get one soon. Tank is 10 months and it has always had 5-6 fish in it. Nitrates are 0-5, it varies time to time. phosphates are 0, i plan to get a fuge this christmast, yes i run chemie-pure. im just a teen and money is low so i stock and add equipment slowley.

D3monic - yes, i got him back in may for $60 at a local LFS. he was the most healthy looking of 5 to choose from, but he died early in June from a combination of BSJF disease and ich... here are pics of him while he was fighting the disease :(

Ich starting,

2 weeks after i got him... just kinda sat in the back of the tank

Feeding Pause or No-Feeding Pause?

The controller system I'm using on my JBJ has the option of a 'feeding pause' in which you can select to have the pumps shut off for a period of time (feeding). However, when the pumps are off, water still drains into the back chambers as it lowers inthe main tank. This increase in volume in the rear is causing issues with my protien skimmer (tunze)... In a five minute feed pause, it will almost fill up the collection cup, so I have the skimmer set to shutoff during feeding - however it takes nearly 4 hrs before foam starts up again...

So I'm thinking of not using a feeding pause and just leaving the pumps and skimmer on. Anyone see any issue with doing things this way?

I really dont skim either. I do frequent water changes though. I had a massive bioload when I was breeding my Mandarins.

*** is bluespot disease? I must google...

Quick question: For the return pumps -

Many replace with MJ1200's which are:

Dimensions: 3.5" L x 2" W x 3.25" H

I'm interested in these for return pumps:

Eheim 1000 Compact Pump which is:

Dimensions: 3.0" x 2.1" x 3.7" (I'm going to assume L/W/H)

Is the extra height, ok? I mean technically, they should give me 50gph more per pump, and are even better built than the MJ's. They have less "gph" when you look at the details, but it is putting 265gph @ 6.6ft while the MJ1200 is 295gph @ 5.75ft. Is my theory right?

One more:

It says : Designated protein skimmer column

Does anyone run a Tunze 9002 in this "column". It doesn't specifically say the dimensions, but this order is defiantly on hold until I find out further.

Nano -

Very nice tank... All that and no skimmer - WOW.

What are your water params (Ca, Mg, Alk, Sg, Temp, pH)

temp ranges 79-81 degrees farenheit, CA is 400-500, changes during the month, pH ranges from 7.9-8.3 depending on the time of day, Alk is usually 9-12

Nano -

Now those numbers really make me wonder what's up with my tank!

My temp is 78 +/- 0.5
Ca is 465 to 500
Mg is 1450-1550
pH is 8.01 to 8.18
Alk is 10 to 9.3

So I've got all these dosing pumps and test my water weekly and adjusted dosing to hold the above numbers as tight as possible and I cant get SPS to live for more than a couple weeks.

I'm also dosing Tech-I, Trace, Amino, and Potassium.

Softies seem to grow nicely but SPSs are doomed...

Fill me in here a little bit - maybe I can help.

How many pieces of SPS or clams do you have? What lighting are you using? What test kits are you using, have you had a friend or LFS test your water? Mg naturally is a little lower, but you're ok.

Why are you dosing Iodine, Trace and K? Are you also testing for Iodine and K?

I have:
1 clam
2 aneones
2 clown fish
1 Royal Gramma
1 Fire Fish
1 Watchman Gobie

My Recordia is doing well.

The Favia is also growing rapidly.

Trumpet and Hammer are also in good health.

I've tried Montipora, pink birds nest, and a couple single and multi branch acros. The acros looke great when 1st put in tank (after 1hr drip aclimation). Their polyps stay out 24hrs a day for a few days then only at night (when in the store they were out all the time Im told). At about the 2 wk mark no more polyp extension and after 2 wks tissue starts to peal off - last one it came off in sheets and was gone in a day. Current one started losing from the bottom, that stopped and lighter colored polyps started to appear at the top half. Its been that way for about a week.

The pink birds nest was nicely colored and lots of polyps. within a week the top half turns white, now at 3 wks entire thing is white and hermit crabs rest in it like birds.

The montipora was green, now spots of green and very few polyps.

Test kits are Salifert - I've tested and LFS has as well.

The amino and potasium was suggested to bring out the colors (when I 1st noticed things going white).

I'm dosing 0.2ml a day of amino and potassium and 3x a week 0.2ml of iodine and trace.

I'm not really testing for iodine or K, but LFS suggested these small amounts for the 28g tank would/should be ok. Same w/ trace. All these additives were the suggested, try this when all the tank parms checked ok and nobody could figure out why Im killing SPSs. LFS owner even came out to house to look over setup.

I do 5 gal water changes every week. Using Seachem Reef salt

THis JBJ has the 150w MH light system - lamp itself is a Giessman 20K. I've also got the power compacts from Nanotuners. My PC are on for 15hrs. MH are on for 10. All bulbs are 2 months old

I've got a CPR HOB refug w/ cheto, mineral mud, and live rock.

I've also got the Two Little Fishies Phosban reactor (with Phosban). ALso running charcol (in small filter bag) inside one chamber.

One LFS told me I should not add SPS until coriline starts to cover everything - Since the tank has only really been stable for 2-3 months I'm told that my tank is still not mature enough. But then I see folks on here with tanks that look right out of the box and they've got tons of stuff growing.

SOrry - Hit send too soon last time.
