JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Its there because when the water falls over from the 2nd and 4th chambers into the 1st and 5th chambers its rather like a waterfall and so drags bubbles down right into the pump area on te side chambers. The bubbles then get sucked into the pump and blown into the display. You need to keep the water level high enough so that the waterfall is as small as possible...ie make sure the water levels between chambers 2nd+4th compared to 1st+5th are almost the same...that way you wont get the waterfall effect causing bubbles in 1st+5th chambers.

Also, JBJ supplied the tanks with two extra sponges that go on the 1st+5th chambers to catch the bubbles. Make sure you are using the sponges if the water levels arent similar as they will tap air bubbles preventing them from being dragged into the pumps.

AS I keep my water level almost the same by toppng up daily, I dont need to use the sponges. Also, if the tank is new for some reason the effect is more. My tank gets NO bubbles in the display area.

HTH.
Very complete explanation ... +1

Wohoo!! Got mine today. It figures that I have to watch the little ones tomorrow and working on Sunday.

ok - i will try to raise the water level in those chambers to see if it helps. i use an ato, so the water level in the outter chambers is a lot lower than in the middle.

i also use the sponges, but i have trouble making them lay flat against the chamber wall all the way down. =\

thanks again for everyones help!

I am looking into buying the 28g HQI Nanocube. Are there any common problems or tips I should know about the thank. I have read a few pages of this thread and the actinic upgrade has been mentioned several times. Is this upgrade needed sps/ lps growth or just personnal pref for more light? How is the overall performace of the stock setup?
Thanks
Chris

I have a JBJ 28 CF quad and I modified the center chamber and nano Tunze for skimming from the center chamber. Works great! If you are interested send me a PM and I will describe the modification. Rick

In addition to the nano tunze protein skimmer center chamber modification I have two other "pearls" . Want to get your nitrates down? add a 5 or 10 gallon cheap tank as a refugium and put Chaeto (sp?) algae in it and use a simple 6500 K or 10000 K CF bulb from Lowes or Home Depot, compact flourescent ( Obama bulb!) to grow the algae. Set it to come on at night for 8 to 10 hours and your nitrates in 1 to 2 weeks will go to zero. Be sure to thin the algae out each month. Also, a cheap persons chiller is a simple fan on LOW running at night or 24 hours a day on the floor around the tank. I never get above 80 with the fan on. With the fan off I get to 82 or 84 but big deal as this is comprable to the ocean reef. I haven't decided if this even needed. My corals and fish and invertebrates in a fully loaded tank are doing great. My bulbs however are CF not MH.

For those asking for picture here is the new skimmer.

To open the hood without hitting the skimmer I moved it back using a roll of two sided tape LOL.

Either use the attchment feature or upload the picture to a website like photobucket.

You can't host pictures from your hard drive.

Removing the lid is a good idea as it helps with letting out the heat from the halide. :)

That's my new rig. When I get the display part of it together I will try to send more pictures. I did not try to take a picture of the eheim wet dry under the stand......
