JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

sahin - I have the Radium 20k right now... I put it in last week as a replacement to the stock JBJ 14k. I am still running the oem ballast as well and it is having problems where the bulb turns off after a few hours and then turns back on after a few minutes. Instead of upgrading to an electronic ballast, i just ordered a phoenix 14k.

As far as growth goes, from all that I have read a 10k provides the most growth. I cant tell you first hand, but I definitely love the color of this Radium with the 2 18w actinics. Hope the Phoenix looks the same.

I recently moved my Yuma rock to a shady no flow spot as they were beginning to lose color. I really hope I dont lose them. I really enjoy the color and they cost me 150 bucks. Anyone have any experience with Yumas?

Nic426, Love those Yuma rics. Hope they work out for you. I have a couple Florida rics and I like them alot. I read about someone else recently having the same problem with the radium 20k bulb. Not sure how to fix that. I was thinking it was a heat issue. Anyway, isn't the phoenix 14k pretty much the same as the stock bulb?

Nic426, I had the same problem with my Radium bulb and discovered that it was the switch in the hood. The switch kicks the bulb off when it over heats to prevent a fire or other heat related disaster. The 20k bulb burns at a higher temp than the 14k which causes this to happen. I was able to solve the problem by propping the feed door partially open allowing the extra heat to escape. Mine has worked fine every since. HTH

Hey guys, just curious for those who own the JBJ 28g tank. Do you guys ever clean out the back of the tank? Mine is only 6 months old and its full of crap like detris-looking stuff.

This is the first part I clean. I will first take out the two pumps (if I'm not lazy), them I will use my long wire brush to loosen up the detris or crap. Then I fianlly take my hose and start to siphon out the water there for my water change. I do a 5g w/c every week if I can. HTH

You clean the back of the tank every week?? I have 4 pumps in the back and it would be an absolute PITA to remove and clean once a week. But the detris is building up so fast that I might have to start doing it. Argh...... :)

I clean mine every other water change. It's a pita removing the pumps but it needs to be done.

JBJ 24G Nano Cube Skimmer

JBJ 24G Nano Cube Skimmer

I have a JBJ 24G Nano Cube that is a few years old. I want to put a skimmer in the back section and still be able to keep the stock lid on the tank. Can you recommend a skimmer that will fit? Thanks in advance.

I thought I would try and share a few pictures of the tanks progress. You have to excuse my picture taking ability though.

vortec on 28g nanocube

vortec on 28g nanocube

Wow, haven't read this thread in a while. However, was wondering if anyone's used a vortec on the 28g nanocube? If so, which one and for how long have you've been running it?

I'm trying to find ways to increase the flow in my tank. However, I'm worried about the thickness of the glass because of a history of the old 12g nanocubes (1st generation) cracking due to thin glass. Also, I haven't had time to research what the minimum thickness should be for the different sized vortecs that are out now.

Any input would be great!

Thanks!

I don't have one yet but plan to in the near future. I know that there are a couple of folks using them with great success.
I have 2 Maxijet 1200's running in my 24G nanocube, is this to much flow?
No at all. I really don't think we ever have to much flow in our tanks. IME most corals adapt to the flow you have.
Careful of the GSP on your main rock, they spread like weeds.

Yeah I know. My hope is to propagate them and trade to others. Once then fully encrust that rock it will be time to cut them back and glue them to plugs.

thanks mr9iron! I'm guessing most people just have one mp10. However, I'm also wondering where they have their's placed in their tank?

Also, for those of you who now only run one return pump, how did you cap your other output?

Thanks!

A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone has ever used a wet/dry vac to clean out the back of the tank. Never did get an answer, so I figured it was never done or just a stupid question. Went to do my water change this morning and decided to use the wet/dry vac to suck out all the gunk accumulated in the back chambers over the last few months. Worked like a charm--it sucked out @ 4 gallons of water and gunk, which is perfect since I had 4 gallons of fresh SW on hand. I didn't even have to take the pumps out.

I don't think it was a stupid question. I just don't think anyone has tried it yet. Maybe I will give it a try next time I do a warer change.
