JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

People out there running stock; Does your system run moderately loud? I am trying to think of ways to reduce some of the ambient noise that it produces, but haven't figured anything out yet. I get a hum from the pumps, and then the fan noise when the light is on.

Does upgrading the pumps and fans and everything do anything to reduce the noise?

I don't really notice my tank's noise after a while. However, my skimmer buzzing is driving me nuts.

I dont use the two flat sponges for the rear side compartments. Instead I sandwhiched the skimmer air pump with the sponges between a narrow shelf. Totally cuts out the noise for me. Now the 4 small fans for the halide canopy are noisier. Try that.

I had some resonance from the pump that sends water to the chiller but I fixed that today. I also find the fans the most noisy of the tank but not irritable.

My main issue now with the tank is how to clean the filter area with so little space... :lmao:

Marcel

I will give it a try.

I don't use the skimmer.

2 question:

1. What does everyone think about the IceCap ballast upgrade? I'd like to be able to cut the amount of power used, and maybe just save a little space.

2. What do people think about the LED hood? Is it enough light? Do you get the nice "shimmer" like you get with halides? Is it good enough for the corals?

Whilst I cannot answer your questions directly, I have modded my ballast and canopy into exactly what you are asking about. I changed out the inerds of the JBJ ballast and put an E-Ballast inside it, didnt have to cut any wires and retained the internal power supply for the 4 fans. I also incorporated 16 Cree Royal Blue LED's and 1 UV LED to run around the perimter of the halide glass.

With the Phoenix 14K, the power output is the same when using either ballast. Looking at Sanjays work into halide bulbs, I know that if I were to use the Radium bulb, I would get less light when using the E-Ballast.

In terms of light I have plenty in there now. Running 700mA, the LED's put out so much light that some corals initially bleached slightly.

When the halide goes off the Royal Blue LED's give an awesome floursence to all the corals, both LPS and SPS.

With the combined lighting, I am certain it is as good as or better than any previous 250w halide setups I had. Also, as the LED's run the perimeter of the halide, I can grow SPS right next to the glass and they have deep colour, instead of being brown etc.

I need to visit this thread more... :o
What exactly is the IceCap ballast upgrade?

Has anybody got suggestions which corals can be placed directly under the bulb?
I have a platform in my aquascape around 10 cm. below the bulb. Placed a pink birdsnest there but it became pale. It recovered when I placed it lower.

Do you happen to have a link to this, or know where I would look for it? That would be interesting to look into. The stock bulb is the Phoenix 14K, correct?

Funny you mention that, not sure if you are running your WMH1 still or not, but I just installed mine about 2 weeks back. The first couple of days the buzzing was something I thought would wear on me over time. I installed one of those $9 walmart fans to blow over the rear chambers and the white noise from the fan has almost completely drowned out the buzzing for me.

A happy coincidence I guess. *shrug*

How does the led hood compare to the hqi hood? Will the led's grow sps as well as the hqi?

Thanks,

thanks mr9iron! I'm guessing most people just have one mp10. However, I'm also wondering where they have their's placed in their tank?

Also, for those of you who now only run one return pump, how did you cap your other output?

Thanks!

I have a mp10 in my tank and love it. I have it placed in the upper right corner towards the front of the tank. The flow is great and seems to have no dead spots with the curved glass.

im thinking about grabbing a vortech mp10 soon. for those of you that have it, do yo have any softies in your tank? Also, did you pick up the eco tech (I think thats what its called) version for extra? And, I am running barebottom, so would this pump alone keep detritus suspended? Thanks.
