JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Also if it is an older nanocube it might not have cross ventilation with the fans. Newer ones do. Nanocustoms sells a kit to add cross ventilation to older jbj hoods (hqi only). This may help too.

I saw a post on the earlier pages of this thread about the small black "mystery cap" that comes with the nano cube. no one seems to know what it is for. I think it can be used to cap off one of the return outlets if you don't plan to be using both returns.

I am only using 1 return as I have a Vortech in the tank hence I am using the cap to cap of the other return. It is exactly for that.

Hey, I have been a long time lurker of this awesome thread. I have gleaned much good advice from this thread. In particular I want to thank SlvrSurfRidr, hppd432, breeze and mr9iron for their advice on questions of mine. I have gotten great ideas for my tank. I has hoping to share them in nTOTM but tides changed quickly 4 days into voting on Saturday afternoon where I lost a double digit lead and have been buried in the dust in matter of hours. However, I want to contribute some of the things I have done to my JBJ HQI this thread.

I had no major modification except NT did a 2xPC retrofit. I use the stock skimmer. The middle chamber is used hppd432 mesh unit to carry live rock, purigen and chemipure elite. I also use filter floss in this middle chamber. I use to use hppd432 chaeto idea in the back but my clams take care of keeping nitrates low, I guess. I do run the JBJ chiller wired to a UV sterilizer that I use when I first itroduce a new fish. For Ca and Alk I use ESV b ionic.

This tank has been running for a little over a year. All my SPS frags started around an inch expect the birdnest and the staghorn in the upper right. They were about 1/2 closed fist size. All the growth has been around or less than a year. I now have over 20 sps species all thriving, 2 maxima clams and 10 varieties of zoanthids. There are several softies including a must of my 4 year old, the pink pulsing xenia.

If anybody wants Bali green slimer frags, red monti cap or pink pulsing xenia, LMK. I have frags frequently. Just pay for the shipping. I know xenia do not ship well. If you are clos, stop by.

Thanks again for keeping this awesome thread. I see all the time people, giving our tank a hard time. Hopefully these pics can prove you can maintain a decent tank with the JBJ nanocube HQI (may be not nTOTM quality but close - hopefully I have not disappointed JBJ HQI owners to much) . It can hold clams, difficult SPS and softies alike!

If you have questions, please let me know. I have taken so much from this thread, it would be an honor to give back some to those on this thread.

Been looking at the LED and ran a search but no definitive threads; has anyone had it up and running long enough to tell if it really supports SPS at all depths? New tech and all that... The Halide looks great but by the time you add a chiller, seems cheaper to have the LED... if it'll support the same corals.

I have the LED but still new. I love it so far and I'm curious to see how it will handle my needs. I plan on a mixed tank with a few Sps and Lps and hopefully a clam but mostly softies.

I just voted for you! Currently you are in the lead! I hope you are the first person to win with a JBJ 28G. I got into this hobby with the intention of one day winning nTOTM with my tank. Can you please post full details of your tank, which halide bulb you are using, water change schedule etc etc. I feel newly inspired to make something special of my tank after seeing your tank. Please post more photos as well. So many people doubt this little tank for SPS corals, but you are a prime example of what can be achieved. Many thanks for finaly posting instead of just lurking! :D

That is an amazing ecosystem you have there. IMHO, it is NOTM material. How often are you changing your chemipure elite and purigen? Also, tell us more about your maintenance habits, like lighting cycle, water changes etc. My tank was recently reborn and I hope to achieve the success that you have.

Exactly. I second that. I have seen too many JBJ 28G thread starts and then they lose interest or upgrade etc. Yours is an SPS/mix tank, whish is quite hard to achieve, so your efforts are paying off. Therefore, please post as much info as possible as it will help others achieve that much more.

Thanks, I have definitely found that the SPS are thriving more than the zoas. The zoas reproduce slowly but the sps have definitely gotten into fragging time. The pulsing xenia I do not think I could even kill.

Just to answer some quick questions. I change the purigen and chemipure elite monthly. I actually recharge the purigen after experimenting on a smaller 24 gallon nano with softies. As far as the clams are concerned, one clam has tripled and the other doubled in half a years time. I use 14K radium for 12 hours with actinics for one hour before and after.

If I win I will post pics of my homemade middle chamber and a lot more pics. If I do not I will post them here. Thanks for the complements.

Do you find that your purigen and chemipure elite are exhausted at the end of the month or is that just your maintenance schedule? I just ordered some chemi pure elite and purigen in hopes of helping to control any phosphates that I introduce to my tank. Not to mention I want my water "polished" as well. I would love to see your homemade media basket. I plan on using my stock one if I can find the darn thing.

I wish I knew how to take better pictures with my camera. I want to post some but they are all crappy looking. My corals include red zoas, green palys, gsp, tubinaria, frogspawn, super man monti and an encrusting monti. Fish are Helfrichi's firefish and twin spot goby, cuc, 4 turbo snails and 2 nessarius snails and a cleaner shrimp. I hope to get a Vortech MP10 and a Reefkeeper in the future.

I just change them out if habit. The purigen is only half exhausted. He middle chamber is easy to make and cost less than 5 dollars. I will try to post a pic this weekend.

Great tank. What are you using for flow in your tank? Just the stock pumps?

Also, what are you doing for your Ca/Alk? Two-part? Ca reactor? Those SPS/clams must be sucking up you Ca.

mp 10 and mj 1200 for the returns on the stock wavemaker

I use two part B ionic, I need approx 30cc alk and 20cc Ca (i dose 1/2 the alk in the AM and the other 1/2 several hours after the lights go off to prevent too high of a pH spike. This certainly has been a challenge to maintain alk and ca with my sps and clams but they are certainly growing.

By the way I misspoke on the bulbs, I now use a 14K phoenix (I just liked the blue better).

Looks like nTOTM will go down to the wire!

Just ordered an ato from ato.com. I am goi g to use a maxi jet 1200 to push it from the floor up tithe rear chamber. I saw where some said this is a little to much flow. Would pinching the hose somewhere help with this or cause problems? It is a double switch valve or safety.

Not sure about that site you referenced.

Just get a Toms Aqualifter. They cost anywhere from $11-20 depending on source, which is cheaper than a maxi jet, and will flow a more reasonable amount for an ATO on a tank this size. You really don't need or want to go huge with a nano tank. No huge flows, no huge reservoirs, no huge changes to the tank all at once. ATOs can screw up and it's a bad feeling to come home to a 1.015sg tank and a big puddle of water...voice of experience there.

I just put an AquaHub ATO on my 28 this past Friday and I'm not going to say I did it the best or only way but, for your consideration:

On the right is my reservoir, one of the little "Dip&Pour" containers normally used for water samples and moving fish from tank to tank. I filled it to the top Saturday and is still over half full. The pump is a Toms Aqualifter under the tank and it cycles for a second or two every once in a while. You can see the ATO bracket and switches (white plastic wrapped over the edge of the tank). It's no big deal to add water (or whatever) to the reservoir every few days. Of course if I could find a 1 gallon container that fit behind the tank that neatly I'd grab it...but not much more than that.

I would do something like that WAY before I went all fancy with MJ1200s throttled back.
