JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I evap about 1 cup per day and am going out of town. Recently the fan I hooked up to my rkl has been coming on more which of course cause more evap. The temps this weekend will be the highest the tank has experienced and I happen to have the maxi jet sitting around, so I am going with that. I think I will just pinch the tube with zip ties and test it before I head out. Just wanted to know what to expect. Btw your ato is a great idea!

I started with a MJ1200 and I found the flow to be too strong as well. I now use a MJ600. Just a thought though, if you pinch off the MJ hosing, you may increase the force of the water coming out causing more splashing.

Yeah, sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do, and a couple cups of water won't do what you need.

Still, I would seriously try to limit the damage your new top-off unit could do. They do screw up and coming home to that sort of mess ain't fun. If you evap 1c a day, and will be away 10 days, a gallon reservoir is more than you need.

I bet if you got a 10' coil of fairly small ID hose from the hardware store and used the whole coil the resistance, when added to 3-4' of head, would give you a fairly gentle flow.

Ziege I will def try your idea if a couple of zip ties in places shows any sign of messing up. I could just wrap the hosing in a few loops behind the tank with the 9 foot of tubing. Thanks for the input.

JBJ LED problems

a friend of mine has a 28gal JBJ LED hood on his cube.

his 10k LED's work great, but the Blue's flicker on and off after about 10-15min. the hood is weeks old, and looks great. the only thing that i can see that is wrong is one of the 4 fans quit working.

is anyone having problems or come across something like this? i am going to take the hood apart to make sure the fan is plugged in and try to find something obviously wrong with the drivers or something.

any help would be great!! thank you

I strongly suspect it's a common problem.

My blues went out after about 4 weeks. I could get them to flash on by tapping the right front LED (I had to remove the clear plastic lens to reliably do so). I called JBJ, filled out their spreadsheet "form", and they sent me 4 new blue LEDs and a return shipping label. I asked about common problems and the person I spoke to mentioned a "flashing blue LEDs" issue.

The new LEDs have an extra heat sink behind the LED on the aluminum mounting/heat sink disc, so I'd guess they think it's heat related.

It took me about 15 minutes with a screwdriver to replace the lights.

I did a ballast upgrade on the HQI to a 175 Ice Cap and I run the DE 150 20k bulb and I love it my fans now turn on w/ my actinics... soooo nice... smaller ballast and better light...

let me know if any of you need help w/ this as I can walk you through it pretty easy... i might get a postin on here too... to help walk ya'll through it...

I have been thinking of changing out my ballast and would be interested in going with an ice cap instead of the nanocustoms.

i was also thinking of a heat issue, but i havent taken the hood apart yet.
thanks.

any others?

sci man sf... i pm'd you my number i will work on a simple explaination... but it would be best if you just give me a call...TTYL

I am in the process of considering putting the one 175w set up from my one hqi hood into the other and so i would have 2 175w and then in my the hood i took that out of... i would add the nanotuners LED 5.6... since this is my low flow tank and i keep all my chalices and acans and zoas in that... does anyone have pics of this set up and the coloration they are going w/?

I got my float valves from ato and they don't fit! Are these guys good with returns etc.? If not I spent 60 bucks for nothing! :(

I hope you didn't spend $60 for nothing either. If you ever decide in the future to upgrade your ATO I would suggest the Tunze Osmolator. It's wonderful.

I also reccomend the Osmolator. I am using one finaly for my tank and after the initial set was replaced due to a faulty sensor, it is working flawlessly.

If I was to drill a small hole in the baffles right next to each of the return pumps could I place the valves in there? It's a double float valve.

Here is a video of my filtration. I run GFO, and a fluidized sand bed filter in a reactor, Fuge, filter sock, and I run Carbon in a media bag, I need to get one more reactor for the carbon. I change out 7 gallons of water every week.

Where did you get it from? What does it look like/how big is it? You referenced a site before but I think there must've been a typo.

Hey guys, as promised, here is my write up for my JBJ 28 gallon HQI, April nTOTM. It contains my maintenance, modifications and stock list. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again for those who contribute to this thread. It has really helped me with my JBJ NC HQI.

I am getting a 28 jbj with stock lighting. Is the lighting good enough to grow sps at half way and up.I am looking for a sunpod to replace the stock lighting someday.

Well, I thought its about time I posted some photos of my tank. It is no way where I want it to be, but its getting there in terms of water quality and tank maturation. I need to buy some more corals and let it all grow out.

Equipment are as follows:

150w Phoenix 14K Halide running on custom fitted Electronic Ballast
16 x Cree Royal Blue LED's @ 700mA
1 x UV LED @ 700mA
Ecotech Marine Vortech MP10
2010 version Tunze Osmolator
TC-10 temp/cooling controller

Here are some coral photos, some were taken under the LED's only others with both lights running.

The next photo shows an SPS which completly browned out when it first went into my tank. I then added the LED's to boost the light and also started to to run GFO in the media container of the tank. The purple tips are deeper and brigther than what the photo shows:

I couldnt get away from LPS corals, so just had to buy this plate coral: It does have the lovely blue tips which look awesome under the Royal Blues.
