Sorry to get off topic but the JBJ LED Hood or Nanotuners 4.6 LED hood worth it?

I think I may go with the overflow box, the only thing is with the box is to have some safety like Water Sensors, Check Valve im guessing.

I cant answer that yet, but i will update in a few weeks or so when i start stocking my LED:beer: From the few led owners i have talked to here, they seem pretty happy with the led setups

Anyone have a DIY LED mod on their 28g? I am not sure if RapidLed's 24 dimmable diy kit would be enough light for a mixed reef tank . Any suggestions?

On the hood thing: IMO in the long run it's worth it (an LED option), at least if you don't plan on constantly upgrading tanks like some people do.

I'm with MrIcky on this one; an LED lighting system will definitely pay for itself in a while. You save on electricity as compared to MH systems, no need for a chiller or the electricity it uses, save on the annual cost of MH bulbs as LEDs should last a good 10 years or more. The "professional" version of JBJs Nanocube LED system has more than adequate lighting to grow whatever you want and if you're into softies you can use the intermediate model. My LEDs are bright enough that I need to shade my rics under ledges or they loose color and my birdsnest is a little bleached so I'm going to need to have to move it down a bit too. In fact, unless you're doing SPS, I'd maybe suggest the intermediate as it's such a small tank you don't have a lot of places that aren't intensely lit.

Let me add if you are a constant upgrader, I'd probably still go LED, but I'd get something modular so I could take it with me to the next project.

When I do water changes I create a siphon and suck the stuff out of the back in to a 5 gal bucket. You can drain the back area first before draining water from the display area so that you get all the junk out of the back and you expose less of your corals to water by lowering the display area's water level less.

As for the LEDs, again, MrIcky is right on. You can get the hood alone from JBJ or, if you're looking for the tank, stand, and hood, you can get that from Marine Depot, Aqua Cave, or others. It's about $650 for the whole set-up or $400 for just the hood if memory serves me correctly.

With the professional version you'll definitely have enough light. Keep in mind there's more than just light to clam success though. I just added that part because some people fail with clams and instantly blame the lights.

What is the best way to add a koralia nano pump? How do I run the power cord out of the tank and still have the hood shut tight to the tank? Thanks

While facing the tank open the hood and look on the far right hand side between the hinge and the edge of the hood and you'll see a small round indention that can be cut out for the cord. It's only about half as thick as the surrounding plastic.

Quick question...

I have caulerpa blowing up all over the place. Anyone know if there's something I can either get to eat this or anything? Driving me crazy. It's everywhere. Or am I going to just have to slowly keep reaching in a pulling it out. That's annoying as well...

I decided to try the AquaEuroUSA Skimmer 2 for my JBJ28. For those that have tried or are using this skimmer, did you have to trim the back rim of the tank to get it in the skimmer chamber? I know some have reported it is a tight fit, but it appears to be about an 1/8" too wide to fit get past the top rim and I don't want to force it in there. It seems like it would be impossible to get out to clean if I don't cut that lip.

I didn't cut anything. I have my top part of the skimmer resting above the lip of the jbj. I couldn't get it below that lip but it's working out fine for me. Since the bottom can come off too easily I use the top part as one holding point while I pull out the skimmer cup with my other hand. In the beginning I was cursing it out because adjusting it was a PIA. Then I realize that I have to blow air into the air-line to get the bubbles started. Now, each time I turn the skimmer off I have to use my turkey baster to blow air into the line.
