JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I'm running the 14k Phoenix + NanoTuners PC addon, but would like to drop all that and upgrade to LED eventually

Isnt the 14k blue enough? or is the PC add on what makes it the right color? What is the combination that you keep on?

+1 on LEDs, good for growth, great shimmer effect, and no heat issues.

I'm not too worried about heat. I'm in the SF bay area. I hardly gets over 65* :) Even with the heat wave's last 3 weeks, the tank temps didnt go over 78*. I have a fan on top. I do like the LED's for the various lighting options & controls though. I've barely had the tank for a month, so switching to LED's will be a tough choice :D

Okay, one more request. For those who don't use the stock filtration setup, what do you have? What do you put in each of the 3 sections of the filter basket? Pics are encouraged!!!

I have a HOB Aquafuge 2 medium. So I lose out the 1st pump. The fuge (3.5g?) has 10lbs of sand, and various macro + skimmer.

The filter basket runs the sponge, purigen and carbon.

Does anyone have a photo of a jbj 28gal hqi with the nanotuners actinic upgrade?
here's mine a year ago w/ Pheonix 14k HQI and the nanotuners actinic upgrage

I have had the JBJ LED since it first came out. I also got 2 leds replaced with the newer style with heat sinks. Like always time passes and now I am out of warrantee and have a new style led die again.

I just purchased a used JBJ HQI hood for its inside MH components and will be switching my LED hood to MH. I am waiting for a few pieces to arrive so i can start the switch. My setup has a chiller so keeping stable water temp is not an issue.

My plan is to upgrade stock HQI 150w to 250w HQI running a Hamilton hqi ballast. Will also be using phoenix 14K DE 250w bulb and nano tuners fan upgrade.

by the final look of the tank I will determine whether to stick with stock HQI hood 4 blue LEDs or use the 4 leds from the LED hood..

Reason you might ask... not sure.. my past larger tanks always had MHs and had real good acro sps growth. this tank is over 1 year and its ULN, looks good but something is lacking as growth is on the slow side to what I was used to.

I have a PAR meter so I will document current LED readings (after I call JBJ and get replacement dead LED) and see after so i can adjust time on accordingly.

my feelings are LED is the future but it needs to be figured out, and the people that have figured it out their LED hoods cost allot of money. Maybe JBJs current setup is better, I have the original LED setup. Don't get me wrong, the LED is bright and has decent par numbers.. possibly the UV is missing or something within the spectrum the old JBJ LED hood is lacking compared to MH. I will be keeping my normal regime and once critters get adjusted to new lights I will see if this was a good or bad move. like always nothing good happens fast.

Funny, here I am going to post some photos of my LED setup and the very last post before mine is one not quite as favorable toward LEDs. I'm not sure what version of the JBJ LEDs Joe has but likely the same as mine. I am pretty happy with mine, I guess it depends on the corals you're keeping and whether or not you need to worry about heat. Just my opinion.
So on to my intended post...

I partially disassembled my LED hood on my 28 Nano today to do a little cleaning and dusting. I started to see little dust bunnies under the glass and plastic light cover so I cracked it open and vacuumed it out, cleaned the glass splash shield, and kept one of the screws out so I can search for some replacements that won't rust. They are beginning to rust just a little. Anyway, the point of this post is to share a few photos. I snapped a few of the LED system while it was apart in case anyone is curious how it's set up. This is the stock 89 Watt professional setup by the way.

corrado007, I have the original first released JBJ LED setup.

Dont mis-understand me, I dont think bad of LEDs just JBJs original LED like I have.

Im confused, you say you like your JBJ LED hood, but it doesnt look stock at all.. all you have stock is the plastic hood. :)

I see you replaced almost all the LEDs in the stock hood.. I guess if you had the same hood as me you also saw the need for upgrade..

I just decided to go back to (old school) MH like I am used to in the past.

I'd be curious to see your hood Joe, or at least the specs on it. Mine is completely stock, this is how it came from JBJ. I bought it December 2010 or January 2011 I think. I just pulled of the glass & plastic splash guards and polished aluminum LED reflector to clean.

ohh man the original ones dont look like that.. yours looks aftermarket. I need to take it appart to see the inside..

Here's mine fully assembled with the splash guards and reflector in place.

And here it is with all the LEDs on.

I didn't realize JBJ had an LED version before the one I have. I thought mine was the first series and then they came out with a lower wattage one several months back. I haven't had any issues with mine at all so far although it is only about 7-8 months old.

Anyone know where I can get the plastic splash guard for the HQI hood? Mine is braking and starting to fall apart, same goes with the screws. lol... Would be nice if there are plastic screws that we can use...

You may be able to find the splash guard here but you'd have to do a bit of searching:
http://www.jbjnanocubes.com/contents/en-us/d752_nano_cube_replacement_parts.html

Or maybe here, I have no idea what the MH splash guard looks like or if it's similar to the LED ones listed:

As for the screws, I just picked up some stainless steel screws about an hour ago at Orchard Supply Hardware to replace the ones that came on my 28 LED (which are starting to rust a little). Hopefully these won't rust, they seem to be and identical replacement, just a different material (I hope).

OK.. corrado007 my LED inside looks like yours...

I just finished swaping inside LED components to MH..

I kept original outside platic hood (HQI and LED are exact)
I re-used glass and platic cover since my LED hood was nicer looking than
the HQI old hood I got, the plastic looked old.

Pulled out LEDs and driver board, and put in the reflector from the HQI hood
with new DE socket for 250w.

Before swap I measured PAR readings next to all my top section SPS and here
are my readings:

Each entry is a different coral:

LED 290 / 250w 850
LED 300 / 250w 1040
LED 260 / 250w 880
LED 300 / 250w 675

corals on bottom

LED 140 / 250w 500
LED 107 / 250w 520
LED 125 / 250w 510

Led on and dawn/dusk also on
when 250w dawn/dusk OFF for readings.

I reduced ON time from 8 hours / day
to HWI hood raised/lifted open 5 inches ON 4 hours/day
Par readings on all corals listed is less than half reading with hood down.

using same PAR meter, same glass 250w is like 3 times more PAR compared
to LED. LED is suspose to be equal a 150W HQI setup.

with my hood , the par meter shows it acting like a 75w hqi halide instead..

Not worried of water temp as my chiller maintains same temp.

I have my full working LED with heatsink and powersupply for sale anyone wanting
to switch to LED.

Joe

So...what does this mean in the overall scheme of things? Unless I'm mistaken, people have been keeping anemones and SPS w/o problems? Just curious if I made the wrong decision

The JBJ led is nice especially if you dont run a chiller. I ran my LEDs for almost 2 years keeping acro SPS with no issues.

For stuff I keep they need more light.

Call JBJ directly. They will ship it pretty quick. I had a missing return elbow and called them. 2$ for the part, 5$ priority shipping, and I had it in 2 days.

Could it be possible to add say the nanotuners 2x24 or the 2x36 to add more actinics to make it more noticeable rather than only 36 watts total. I know the upgrade is mainly for just adding colors but i was wondering if the 2x24 or the 2x36 would fit in the hood so maybe i could have a higher wattage to add a sunrise and sunset part or lighting. I'm kinda new to all this as i am sure i am not using the right words for everything just kinda curious on what everyone thought and your suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks alot
