JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

My tank is now populated with a couple ocellaris clowns and a tiny royal gramma. Tonight I'll be moving some zoas and acans from my ten gallon reef after they've been dipped.

Wish me luck!

This question is for those using an Aquamaxx HOB-1 skimmer. The skimmer works great with one exception. Salt seems to build up on the plastic intake hole very quickly and clog the intake line. It seems I need to take it out almost monthly now and clean it with vinegar and then through the front of the pump with a very small aquarium bristle brush. Has anyone else that uses an Aquamaxx had the same issue? And if so, is there a better solution?

Thanks

Once a week I put the end of the yellow air tubing into the tank water (or the water in the skimmer) and leave it so that it sucks water through that fitting for a couple of hours. Then pull the tube back up and plug it back into the muffler and no issues. Still do a vinegar bath every 6 months on mine but don't do much but empty the cup the rest of the time.

Couple of quick questions:

1) What do you guys use for filter media in the box, or do you use something different? On mine I am using the standard little box with handle, but it seems that not that much water actually gets pulled through it. It seems like the majority just flows right over the top and around the actual filter box.

2) What size of heater do you use? I have a pretty small one in there right now, but was thinking of getting a bigger one that didn't need to work so hard. I wasn't sure if it was necessary though.

3) If I were going to replace/upgrade the skimmer, what would be the most logical replacement for it? Realizing that I don't really want to spend $400 on a skimmer at the moment...

Thanks for any thoughts!

I replaced the media box with the intank media box. Much larger and forces the water to flow through it. I have chemipur elite and purigen in the bottom spot, my chaeto grows in the middle and my carbon bag and filter floss go in the top.

I have been running 1-100 watt heater for a while but am switching to 2-50 watt heaters soon just so if one goes out there is still heat. 100 watts is plenty.

I still recommend the Aquamaxx HOB-1 on this tank. Fits well, skims like a Champ, and is easy to clean. I see them used all the time for $50-$80 and new they are $120. can't go wrong with it.

I've never seen an Aquamaxx HOB-1 for $50-80.........and I looked for 6 months straight before buying one. They are $220 new and you should be able to find a good used one somewhere between $150-180. I bought mine for $199.99 new with a discount coupon a while back. You may be able to find something similar at Marinedepot or such. If you EVER see one that works for $50-80....BUY IT ASAP! That would be a steal!

Media Basket & Skimmer

Media Basket & Skimmer

I have a question--I took out the stock media basket a long time ago when I got my first skimmer. I am running a CPR Bak Pak 2. It will only fit in the center chamber and then the return flow goes into the designated skimmer column.(which also houses the pump for the chiller) I just put a Purigen pack and Chemi Pure Elite at the bottom of the middle chamber. Does that not work? do they really need to be in a filter basket for the water to pull through them ? The skimmer seems to work quite well but I don't see any other options of where to put things.

I passed up 2 HOB-1's last week for $65 each. I paid $110 for mine new from someone that bought it and never opened it out used it. Maybe I'm just lucky?

By putting the bags at the bottom of the center column the only part of the media that gets used is the part that covers the hole at the bottom going to either of the chambers on the sides of it. By having a media basket the water is forced to flow through what ever is in the basket before it can leave to got through the other chambers. More effective use of the media in my eyes.

That's the one. Yes it's $50 but it is much better built and makes full use of the chamber. You will never need to buy another basket again. Well worth the price. I wouldn't go back to that junky small black one again.

Hello all. New to reef central. Had an older nano cube about 10years ago and took it down after moving, marraige and some babies. Set up the new 28 pro led about 2 years ago. I will post some pictures soon. Love to read about all of your experiences and knowledge. Thanks.
