New kid on the block (actually I am 60 years old)
I am ready to jump into the hobby and with research and lots of post reading come down to the JBJ 28 gal. Trying to decide between the intermediate and the pro editions. I want to focus on soft corals, I want Zoanthids, Xenia. I also would like some of the LPS like Frogspawn, bubble, candy cane etc. My question has been asked before but should I get the pro edition with 89 watts of Led or the 27 watt system that says its for mid to low light corals! As I look at the various sites that sell corals so many describe the corals needs as low-med light or med to high. As long as its med to low or med to high wont that qualify as mid range light needs. I know placement in the tank is part of the equation but I just need to understand more how to gauge what light I will need. I dont plan on having any SPS but I realize that if i get the pro edition that would be an option down the road. If you have either system I would really appreciate your thoughts.

The Intermediate is a great light that will be sufficient for all your soft Corals. I was growing zoa's,Paly's,gsp,Kenyi Tree, Frogspawn, and even some pocillopora. You will definately be able to grow those types of corals in the intermediate series without any problems from the lighting system.

I have the LED version because I wanted to have some SPS. If I was sure I didn't want SPS, I still might bet the LED version as it uses less electricity, cooling isn't an issue, and the bulbs don't need to be changed, at least not for a long time. Most people with the non-LED tanks have heat issues, which means buying a chiller, which means more electricity (significantly more). Of course, given the price difference, it may take 50 years to recoup the cost in electricity bill savings :)

Follow up question for anyone. Does anyone with the 89 Watt leds have any problem with bleaching of the soft corals? That light is similar to the 150 Metal Halide. Just wondering if I opt for the stronger lights will that be MORE than I need for soft corals and the lower light corals?

I did have a Toadstool at one time. I gave it away as it was too big for the tank. I had it pretty high in the tank and it did fine. Right now all I have is SPS, LPS, a couple of ricodias. All doing well.

Whats the best place to get this Tank? I've been looking at some local stores around Chicago and can find it with the stand.

Anyone now of a good place to find a good deal on the whole package?

craigslist. i just picked up the CF version (105 watts) last night used for $150 including the stand. you could easily get one like this, and sell the CF or halide top and get a LED retrofit and save a ton of money
