JCole's box of rocks

Anyone ever dosed bleach to their system? I am on 2 weeks now at 1.5ml daily. So far, I am liking the results. Two weeks is still to early for anything, but we shall see.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that.

Would love to hear about the results you are seeing with bleach dosing. Have thought about doing that several times but have never been brave enough.

Nope, never even researched that. Is it meant to be an oxidizer like peroxide? Are we talking about a system with live animals?

It is purely anecdotal at the moment, but so far, I feel positive about it. All of my fish, coral, inverts, and rocks are in a 300-gallon rubbermaid holding tank in the garage. They have been there for eight months now, as I reset the current system. The only filtration in the system is a skimmer, and I haven't changed the water. One positive thing I notice is that the water is clear, like glass, and there is absolutely no smell in the tank. The tank was stinking up the entire garage, with no water changes, GAC, etc. Since dosing, there has been no smell.

I dosed Bayer and Ivermectin to my system 8 months ago and it did some pretty bad things to my livestock. 95% of corals were affected. If I didn't lose corals, then they completely lost color and browned out. The ones that survived are looking much better over the last couple of weeks. It could be a coincidence but the color is much more vivid and almost every coral has new growth on the tips.

I began with 0.5 ml daily, progressed to 1 ml daily, and currently maintain 1.5 ml daily. I intend to continue until I notice a problem or see no reason to increase the dosage.

Yes and yes. I am dosing it to my 300 with all my livestock (primarily SPS and Tangs). I have had issues with bad bacteria and pathogens in the past, and I am always thinking of ways to help the system.

It's weird to say, and I don't know about anyone else, but I can feel when the system is off. I can walk into the room and tell that something is wrong with the system. Whether it is slow growth, discoloration, sickness, etc., I can feel something is off. Ever since dosing bleach, the system just seems better and feels like it is clean. I know it's strange and purely anecdotal, but at this point, I can only report positive outcomes.

500 is still cycling. Live rock from the keys is brown and covered with algae now, which was expected. Dry rock is now specking with brown algae (possibly diatoms). Hopefully, the cycle will be completed soon, and I can add rock from KP next week. Corals in the 300 are looking better now. After Ivermectin and tearing the system down, the corals turned brown and looked bad. They are now regaining their color and growth, which is a positive sign.

20lbs of KP live rock came in this morning. Really nice for base rock. There is also a good amount of life on the rocks.

Very nice. Philip and Kara are awesome.

Yes, they are! I would definitely order from them again. My plan is to relocate these rocks along with the Marco rocks to a cryptic zone in a month or two. If needed, I will order more from them.

A little update on the systems.

The main tank has the uglies starting. There are no concerns here, and I personally find those stages enjoyable. The cycle is acting a little strange, though. Ammonia dropped to zero; I have 40 No3 and .07 Po4 but nitrite still shows elevated and will not lower. I am not worried, as the tank does seem to be cycled. I will still give it a couple of weeks to see how it progresses.

The corals in the 300 sump in the garage have done a complete 180. The colors are back, and the ones that were struggling are now showing their color again. Except for the bleach dosing, I haven't done anything different to the system. It could be one big coincidence and the corals found a happy spot after six months or there is something to this bleach dosing. I know it's all anecdotal but the color and growth have drastically improved since dosing bleach daily.

According to @Randy Holmes-Farley, nitrite isn’t as toxic in reef aquaria as originally thought. Given that you’re getting nitrate readings, as you mentioned, I wouldn’t be overly concerned with nitrite levels

I am not concerned, just curious as to why it isn't budging. I also know elevated levels of nitrite can cause faulty nitrate readings so just a little curious. The current state of the tank appears to be cycled. I don't plan on adding any macros and fish until a couple of weeks so it should be fine by then.

Cycle is complete now. Algae is starting to cover the rocks and is taking to the cement shelves the most.

This doesn't look look like GHA. Does this look like bryopsis?

Looks like it might be Bryopsis as it usually has that feathery appearance.

Man, I hope not. If so, it had to of come in on the live rock. I have a bunch of macro algae coming in next week. Do you think I should wait on those and hit the tank with Fluconazole? I would hate to go that route if it isn't bryopsis. It does look like it though.

I'm thinking Bryopsis as well. I'd hit it with Flucon just to be safe.
