JCole's box of rocks

Has anyone had any experience with a Marineland deep dimension tank? I know there were issues with their 300DD in the past with leaking seams, etc. My LFS said they cannot order them and do not know if Marineland will carry them again. I ask because a local to me has a 250DD at a pretty good price. Deciding if I should go with that or order a new 120 or 180. The 250DD has been sitting in his garage for a couple of years.

Yea they were not great for a long time. I have not heard much anymore about them failing but I think people stay way.

120 are great size. Not too big and not too small. Decent dimension front to back. Easy to light with two lights. One of my favorite sizes.

From what I’ve read, I’ve seen the 93 Cube, 150DD, 200 DD, and 300 DD with issues. Some say it’s the black silicone and if it has clear silicone on the bottom panels, it’s fine…I don’t know though. Apparently this is what a lot of people were seeing back in the day - Marineland Cube issues

I am not going to take my chances on the tank, especially with it being used and stored away.

The LFS told me they do not make them anymore because of it. I am going between the 120 or a Fiji cube.

Has anyone owned a Fiji Cube aquarium? They seem really well made with low iron glass. I am looking at the 142 gallon 60x24x24 tank.

That would be a nice tank size. I've never owned one and don't know anyone (personally) who has.

I just purchased the tank. I went with a Marineland 180 Gallon 72x24x24. I really enjoyed my Marineland 150 gallon but I always wished the depth was 24" and a little shorter. I feel I will enjoy this tank.

So, what are you going to do about a lighting scheme since you have a mix of A1's and A1P's? Are you going to try to blend them? Did you end up with more that 3 A1P's?

I was hoping to blind my neighbors...

Honestly, I don't know yet. I received 6 so far and half were the A1P's. I have two more that were delivered today so I am curious to see what those are. Depending on those, then I will have a better idea. I am thinking of spreading them out or isolating them more towards the middle. I plan to have all 8 over the tank and it will also depend on my aquascape.

I ordered 250lbs of Fiji dry rock that I am going to start cooking. I have a 45 gallon rubbermaid can in the garage with water and some live rock from my old system. I have been dosing ammonia and carbon daily and it is smelling good and the can is coated with bacteria. I will clean and acid wash the rocks this weekend and then add them to the tank.

A little update of my little ocean.... I just threw some pieces in a 20 gallon and so far they are doing good. Took a couple of phone night pictures last night through orange glasses. I will try and get some better pictures during daylight.

200 lbs of dry rock showed up today. I will be power washing and acid washing them this week. My new sump showed up over the weekend. I went with the Trigger Triton 44 V2 sump. It has a really nice, large refugium area in the first chamber. I also am going to be running a canister filter on this tank, but more like a polisher and carbon/GAC reactor. The canister filter (Fluval FX6) should be here today, and then I'm going to install it on the sump to start running water through it and the sump. I will move the live rock, which is currently cooking in the garage, to the sump and add the water from the bucket (my wife is going to love me!). Hopefully, this will help get things seeded before the tank gets here.

Along with that, I am replacing the sheetrock in the corner where the tank is going to go. It is Swiss cheese from where pumps, cords, etc., ran through the wall into the garage. Everything will be relocated from the garage and into the closet in the room for this system. Once drywall is installed and painted, then I will focus on building the stand.

Still a good little bit of work ahead of me, but I am looking forward to this build, and I feel it will be my best one yet. Hopefully....

Busy weekend. Finished and painted the drywall. Will add another coat and hopefully painting will be finished. Set up the new sump in the garage and running old tank water and live rocks through it at the moment in hopes of seeding before plumbing in the new tank. Installed and programmed new Apex and Trident.

Hooked up the canister filter to the sump but will end up removing the filter and replacing it with a Bashsea 6-18 media reactor. It has been a while since I ran a canister filter and I forgot that it pulls from the intake and with it being at the same level as the sump, it is giving me issues. I have a pump pushing water into the canister filter, which works but it still develops air in the filter over time.

Acid washed 200lbs of rock. Most rock looks good but some will need a second bath to really open them up.

The acid pulls out some nasty stuff

The tank is in and ready for me to pick up on Thursday. I will focus on building the stand this weekend and plumbing. Hopefully, by next weekend I can move the tank in and start setting it up.

No updates? Are you trying to compete with me for longest running build thread from start to water in the tank?

🤣😂

I think my wife would say differently... 🤣. I am getting a lot done but have also stepped back a little this week. If all goes according to plan, then I should have the tank on the stand by next weekend. I am shooting for water in the system by the end of April. I could speed it up but I don't want to rush anything. I am going to take my time on the aquascape.
