Jebao RW-8 Review

Ok folks, got my Jebao RW-8 "Wireless" controllers in the mail yesterday and got them setup last night. So I thought I would give my first impressions along with some pitchers.

So there they is out of the box with it's components. So far so good.

Now compare them to what was in my tank, two Koralia 1050s. You notice it is a lot smaller.

I put two of them in my tank one in the front left corner and one in the back right corner. This may change I just haven't figured out the best way to set them yet.

All in all I like them a lot so far. I have them set in W1 on the lowest speed and lowest dial speed. I had them turned up and WHOA there was a TON of flow! My corals were basically bent in half. Even on the lowest speed there is a TON of flow and a LOT of water movement in the tank. I almost think two of these is overkill in such a small tank. Of course placement may fix that, yet to be determined.

As far as cycling through the modes and the speeds, it is really simple. Pretty intuitive when you figure out what patterns the pumps operate on. The instructions did not do a really good job explaining them so I went online and found a helpful chart that explained how the pumps work in regards to off and on times and what not. Feed mode is nice as it turns off the pumps for 10 mins so you can feed and you can manually cancel it as well. From what I have read it is also really easy to incorporate these into a controller.

Now the only drawbacks I have seen so far.

When I initially plugged them in and set them to "master" and "slave" (which is stupid simple) the "master" pump did not initially work right away. I found out I had to manually push the propeller with something to get it started. After that I had no issues.

Also, last night I put the controllers into "night" mode to slow down the pump when it's dark outside. This afternoon, I noticed they were still in "night" mode and did not appear to have sped up at all during the day. The instructions say "quit the mode by long press down "night" button until yellow indicator dims". So...I long pressed the button...for like a minute...the indicator never dimmed. I had to power off and on both pumps to get both pumps out of night mode and then had to cycle the modes back to W1 from its "flow" mode. All in all not a huge bother, just annoying.

So...initial thoughts.

1. WOW there is a TON of flow from these things.
2. W1 and "flow" mode seem to be the most useful with the others being "eh".
3. Night mode...yeah...

I would recommend them off of 24 hours use. We shall see in the weeks to come!

... with some pitchers...

Wow. Its spelled pitchurs man! :D

Seriously tho, if feasible I would probably return or ask for a replacement if you need to push the prop to get it to initially turn and if night mode isnt working. Thanks for the review. i still havent purchased mine yet, but will soon.

I like mine a lot too. I would try else mode as that is what most people run them in. I have mine dialed way down also.

I might for the night mode. Have not played with them a lot yet. Apparently a lot of them need an "initial" push to start. At least that is what I have seen on various sites.

If you are using night mode with the RW-8 make sure that you mount the controller low enough so that light can shine on the light sensor in the upper left corner of the controller. When I initially mounted the controller, I had placed it too high on the wall so when my lights came on in the morning the light did not shine on the sensor and remained in night mode. As soon as I lowered the controller a few inches on the wall the pump sped up.

I just read that Jebao came out with a module that allows the pumps to be controlled with an Apex, for even more control.

They sure did. Not super expensive but not cheap either. I plan on running mine with the controller I am working on...if I ever finish it...

I don't understand the need for night mode.

Night mode uses the light sensor, after your lights go off in the evening, to reduce the speed of the RW-8 powerhead to its slowest speed and changes the mode from "W1", "W2", "Else", or "H" to "C", to reduce the flow at night.

The amount of flow depends on your critters. Softies need a lot less flow than SPS. I like the option of two smaller powerheads vs. one for several reasons.

1. Two is better than one. Obvious lol
2. Having more sources of flow can help with dead spots.
3. You can slow down two of them to 25% each and have low flow while you can't speed one up past 100%.
4. If one dies you are not SOL but you still have one left to run while you figure out what to do.

I run 4 wp25's in my 110 tall along with a mp10 and a 1200 GPH return. I think I have enough flow.

One more thing...

I neglected to clean mine for about 6 months + and noticed the flow in my tank was not good. After running this one in vinegar for 24 hours and giving it a scrub it's back to 100% power. The difference in flow is unbelievable. Now I'm going to clean one every couple of weeks that way they all get cleaned ever two months at least.

Yes I understand what it does. I don't understand why people would want to lower the flow at night.

As my tanks are in wall, and the maintenance room is in the dark most of the day, I am questioning the necessity of night mode. IYO, is the RW series worth the extra $$ over the wp series?

I think they will be good used in tandem. They are two different types of flow. WP narrow flow and very direct. RW wide flow but still very strong. IMHO

night mode is a gimmick, the ocean never sleeps, actually it is sometimes more volatile at night

i would not use that options.
