I am looking for a powerhead for my 40 gallon breeder. Would this pump be efficient for a 40 and the only one I need?

If i was keeping my 60 gallon that would be what i would go for as an inexpensive alternative to the other wave makers, i personally have a wp40 that i love, but have it turned all the way down on h1 mode so it doesn't blow water and sand out of my 60 gallon, picked it up for when i set up my 135 but couldn't resist using it. Good pump if you ask me.

what you mean by large? you mean flow to much? I want to buy one of these today. I am hearing they maybe gone soon as Tunze is suing the company

wp40 would be too big for your 40g breeder, the wp40 in my 60 gallon is actually too big as i'd like to run it on reef mode but it would blow my coral and sand everywhere. I have it because i'll be using it in my 135 gallon once that is set up. The only setting that works in my 60g is w1 mode on the lowest output setting.

I just ordered 2 wp 25's yesterday for my 75 gallon tank I was told that the wp 40's would be to much for my 75 if that helps you...

if you are keeping sps, the 25 would be fine. would be better if you can get the converter to make it a little less powerful. If you only have softies and lps, check the 10 out. I have a 25 on my 65g and i have to direct it along the back wall so it won't knock anything over. it is pretty quiet though.

I run a 40 and 25 on my 120 they blow the sand around quite a bit, I've had to place some rubble in specific areas to keep the bottom from showing, out of 90 pounds of sand.

a 40 will be too much for anything other than a bare bottom 40G tank.

I run both on else mode.

Both are quieter than my computer fan in the same room.

I am curious could you use the apex to control the pump?

Yes. You can make your own cable, but a lot of people just order the Reef Angel cable and change out the connector. Check the equipment forum for the wp-25/wp-40 threads.
