Jellyfish Tank?

Anyone have any experience on jellyfish aquarums? I know they need a special cylintrical shaped tank to survive..but not much more than that. Anyone keeping jellies now or in the past? I think it'd be cool to having a living lavalamp.

Yep, you looking for a kreisel tank. Its not for everyone as they require special attention for care and for feeding. Its also expensive as the tank is specifically made just for them. I have a 48"L x 14.5"W x 48"H tank being build right now. It is out of 1.25" acrylic. You do not have to go so big but the jellies wont out grow the tank. You also want a cold water rated chiller 65F. A descent bio filter and skimmer will do. The LD50 on ammonia for jellies is 70ppm. They need to be fed twice daily. Their are lots of companies selling jellyfish aquariums that or tumbler boxes and can work but for long term success a kreisel will give you the best results. So far I'm in 10k.

You don't NEED a curved tank. I've kept plenty of jellies in a typical 'box'.

Also not all are cold water, some (like moon jellies and upside down jellies) do just fine into the mid 70's or even low 80's for temp.

Just make sure you have good flow and NO way air can get into the tank itself. Also, make sure the suction inlet or overflows won't suck them up. Lots of small holes over a very large area reduces suction at each point so they don't get stuck and die.

That is true you don't need a curved tank.:headwally: But if you go to a public aquarium that is what you will see. In keeping animals the best survival comes in replicating their natural environment. Cold water jellies do better than warm ones in my experience. Thats why I talked about what I have personal experience with. Aurelia aurita is the primary species I keep and maintain. They also love tumbler boxes as well but is a pseudokreisel. There are many specific jelly fish tanks available.
