Thanks Mark!

I think I'm gonna drill some more holes today or tomorrow for venting and cords.

I'm still out on whether I should mount 2 more fans up on the top-rear of the canopy. What do you think??

I might add two 3' fans to suck the air out. If you order, lmk as I will piggy back. I spent 4 hour rescaping and regluing last night. I need to let my tank stabilize before I kill everything :(

Are you going to add a center trim piece to break up th elinear distance. I ended up doing it and I likes it a lot better. I have pictures of both before and after if you that will help.

I was thinking about adding a center piece, but I'm not sure. The problem is that the trim is not two sided. One end is thicker than the other. If I put it down the middle, I'd need to find a new trim piece.

If I order up the fans, I'll let you know for sure, but I was going to mount them for sucking air out too. Two on the sides for drawing in new air, and two up top for sucking it out.

Are those pics in your thread?

Yes, the pics should be there, if not they are on hd.

I understand about the trim. I guess I overlooked that.

I am down for two 3" fans to draw air out as you said. I am just trying to get everything dialed in so I don't lose anything else :(

Schweet! how close do you live to Mark? maybe i can do a mini tank tour when i'm up there for work this summer :)

I'm in Carmichael which is a suburb of Sac. Its about 10-15 minutes from Mark's, but please, feel free to stop anytime! I may even be down to taking a local tour myself :D

We can map out a few stores and tanks to hit ;) You better bring a big ice chest

Hey!!!! You started without me. :p

Congrats Jim! I'm very excited for you and look forward to an awesome build thread.

Will this be a substrate free reef? Have you thought about adding a wavebox instead of another stream?

LMK if you want any softy frags. I know you didn't mention them as being in your plans, but I'll be glad to send you what I have as a tank warming gift.

Mark,

I think I have an ice chest big enough ;)

Davey,

Thanks bud!!

Mike!

I was wondering when you were gonna stumble across this! Gotta get used to that new name now!

Yes, right now I am planning on going BB...... but a local shop is running his display BB with a DSB sump. His tank is amazing. So.. I have been thinking of trying it out. I know its against the whole "BB" concept, but I really only want to go BB so that I don't have to clean the SB in the display. I can run a ton of flow in the display and not have to worry about sand getting kicked up.

So I'm still up in the air, prolly gonna do some more research over the next few weeks and find out what will best suit my goals (and even what my real goals are!!).

What do you think?

As far as a wave box goes, would you recommend one over the stream? Do you have to lower the water in the display to get a good wave? I haven't used one, but I'm more than happy to consider it.

TIA,

Jim

I'd definitely add the wavebox instead of another stream. If I didn't need two of them I would be using it, but there isn't enough room for two in my tank. Since you have a center overflow, the wavebox will be really great on your tank. When you get it going see how much room you have from the water surface to the top of the tank. If you have two inches or more then you'll be fine. If the teeth in the overflow aren't low enough, you can always dremel them out a little bit.

as far as sand... I think putting sand in the refugium is fine, but putting it in a bucket that you can dump out every year or so is better. I have a 5g bucket full of sand that is fed off my return pump. Basically about 200gph gets dumped into the bucket of sand and overflows back into the sump. I like being able to take my shopvac to clean the display and the sump. They are great at sucking up detritus.

I'll size up the wave box/overflow situation when I freshwater test it. Great idea, thanks Mike!

Shopvacs are freaking awesome, but I've never used one to siphon my tank!! Just to clean up my tank water.....

That sounds like a really good idea. So when you remove the DSB once a year, you don't get any spikes or dramatic changes?

I didn't have any problems when I swapped it out. I have a 100g rubbermaid sump, so I just added the new sand before I removed the old sand. I used one of my gfo reactors to feed it until I made the switch. The bacteria will be back like it was in the new sand in about three days time. It's just my way of doing a DSB in a bucket. Have you ever read that thread?

I have a little 10g shopvac that is only used for water changes.

I know they have models that have a hose fitting on them. Attach a hose outside and you're golden; nice. Me likey :)

Thats actually a really good idea. I think that a small shopvac purchase is in my future :D

Mark, I was thinking about stopping by and checking out the progress sometime this week (if thats cool). I'll give you a call later today. I read in your thread that you may head out to YR today. Are you still planning on heading out there?

Mike, no I don't think that I have read through that one. Got a link?
