Jims reef in a barn

fullmonti

now is the time
Yes we live in a barn. My wife & I have three horses. About four years ago we bought & moved into a horse barn with a 700 square foot caretaker apt in what was the hayloft.

barn.jpg

Not a cool post-and-beam & stone northern type barn, just a metal pole barn. We converted the stalls downstairs into my wood shop, tack room, wash stall & some storage. After about a year I started to finish out a new room in the hayloft to be our living room, which would house my new tank. The tank is a 180 peninsula style between the new living room & kitchen.

This is what the hayloft looked like when I started. The door went from the kitchen into hayloft.

Had to reinforce the floor where the tank would be.

A little farther into project.

Got the walls in, starting to paint.

Room done, tank in & starting to epoxy the rock work together. The pipes inside the tank are for two closed loop systems.

rockwork.jpg

This is what the rock work looked like before water went in. The main closed loops intake is the the 1 1/2" pipe on the left, the return is the pipes overhead. The second closed loop intake is in the overflow area, it returns inside the rock column in the center, & under the large rock on the right.

This is what the new living room looked like soon after. Just on the other side of the wall to the left is a five foot wide fish room that houses the sump, skimmer, water mixing/change etc.

I have been wanting to start this thread for two years now. Glad I am finally do'n it. Have to stop right now, will post more today.

That is awesome! I guess we're going to need to see the update pictures and some closeups of the stocking. Also want to see your fish room etc.

What filter was used in the final photo? It looks really cool without distorting alot.

sweet setup.. My barn is just full of reef equipment, empty tanks and motorcycles=) and a few stray cats..

awesome setup jim.. what type of lighting are you running in there, also livestock plans for the future? any corals? that tank screams coral.. i would also like to see a pic of the room you have built, very cool design. when i own a home a setup like this will be a definate must.

fishroom1.jpg

Fish room in the beginning with plumbing parts assembled. The hole in the floor is a floor drain, incase of a leak/overflow of some thing, also use it for draining during water changes. Also sealed the baseboard & floor & put in the bump at the end of fish room & painted the whole place with porch paint.

65gal acrylic tank for sump.

fishroom2.jpg

Got the larger Reeflo skimmer, this & most of the build was on the advice of guy at LFS as I had no experience ATT setting up a large reef tank. Made a few changes along the way, but nothing major. There has been at one time or another a fug, frag tank or NPS tank on the bench above the skimmer. Later when SPS started growing a calcium reactor.

Have three overflows, one goes to skimmer one to sump, both empty into 100 micron media bags, last one is the intake for second closed loop. As you can see I have a ocean motion on the main closed loop. I really like this, more plumbing & uses more power for the pump than a bunch power heads/vortechs but I like it better & think it turns over the water better. I have moved the lights down two times, they are about 10" from the tank now.

tankplumbing.jpg

Plumbing before any thing went in. The return from sump is at the far left, it doesn't go up to the top where the lights are any more, it just runs along side the closed loop line (current pics later).

Guess it's time for some coral before shots.

I had a terrible battle with nearly clear hair algae a few months after set up. Never did know exactly what caused it, best idea i heard was stored nutrients in the rocks. Any way thankfully that is over. You wont believe how much the montis have grown.

These pics are more for comparison later.

Thats 10 pics have to close & start new post. (I don't know why that one pic is smaller, original is same size as all the rest, will try to fix)

Its an HDR shot.

Yes the shot of the whole room is a HDR. For those who haven't spent way to much time & money on photography HDR is high dynamic range photography. Basically you take three or more different exposures of the same subject & assemble them taking the best parts of each exposure to make one image with more detail than normally possible. I hope that is decent explanation.

What were you raised in a Barn?! LOL that's very creative, beautiful, and the tank is amazing. I envy you outta the box kinda guys.

Thanks all for kind comments.

FTS (snapshot) a few months after algae & stabilizing.

A few months after that. If I can find dates I'll give time between. There are a lot of large frags on the sand bed, which I wish weren't there but no frag tank so just have to store them till I can find them homes. I now trade frags to LFS for salt & food, sell some to local reefers (cheap) & some I couldn't find a home for & got sick of dealing with I have just tossed out on the gravel driveway.

All the chromis picked each other to death. The two tangs & niger trigger have gotten pretty big & zoom around the tank like maniacs at feeding time. They so intimidated the anthias they would hide & not eat at feeding time & they starved. The pair of clowns, starry blenny & blue star wrasse don't seem to mind, & are doing good. No plans for new fish.

Well from this point on I'm going to have to take some new pics, which I will do shortly.

What are the tank dimensions? Lighting and reflectors?

Tank is 60" long 30" wide 24" tall. Lights are MH Radiums 400w on each end 250w in middle, lumenarc III mini reflectors. I added 24 3W LED blues or pop no to long ago. Pics to follow.

Jim

I am setting up a tank with the same dimensions soon. I am hoping that two 400w in lumenbright lg reflectors will cover it. Nice tank.

Nice tank,

2 400 and a 250, sounds like alot of light for 2 ft. depth and 5 by 2.5. How close to the water surface are the bulbs, and what spectrum are they?

Very nice tank and very nice barn and apartment. I used to live in a caretaker's apartment above a barn and had a 120 gallon but nothing as nice as what you have!

I finally got a new FTS, will take some more updates pix tomorrow.

Some of the colors aren't quite right, but you can see growth any way.
