Joe's 190g 60x36x20 SLOW Mixed Reef Build.......

Thanks! They turned out 100x better than my first ones. The first ones I used noodles, lol. They were incredibly easy to use, and costed about $20 to make. I just gotta wait the 6 weeks is the only unfortunate part.

I made the rock about 4-5 months ago I would estimate. To this day I still have noodles in the rocks lol. Ive had them soaked in water the whole time, and Ive even given them vinegar soakings. I was hoping the acid would help dissolve them. It was a miserable failure. I used about 4 or 5 parts rock salt to just portland cement mixture. I made a large slab for the shelf, and I just used half cinder blocks as my foundation for the caves. That way I could get exact matching heights also. Today a lot of the salt on or towards the surface is already dissolved, making it look more like some pouros rocks. Im liking it so far. Especially since they will be hiden in the back of the tank anyhow.

The rear center Mark, yeah. Im hoping it'll still leave the valley look, but with a shelf in the rear. Maybe for fish to hide in, or lower light corals to get some shade under.

I wonder how long I Should wait before I start to get SPS? Theres a local guy who has some beautiful SPS frags for "Whatever I want to give him" is his words. So Id obviously pay or trade for them, but it seems like I can get a good deal. But the last thing Id want to do is take him up on his generosity just t okill the peices.

I would not add any until you have your final idea of aquascaping done. You just want to make sure you do not have any spikes, just in case. How stable is your tank now, especially alk?

when things are stable, I would start with (youngei) slimmer, millies, torts, birdsnests and some caps. They will give you a good read on your alk and mag.

Fair enough. Im a fan of millies and especially caps, so that wouldnt be a bad start. I gotta hang that 2nd lumenarc some day.

How do you guys keep your sand down too? I dont have nearly as much flow as most of you guys. I have 2 6080s, 2 6045s, and about 900-1200 coming from my return. My sand keeps blowing like crazy still even.

I was told that the sand I bought was aragonite... so I was told. I dont know how expensive it normally is, but I paid $50 per sack of this stuff. Though it does look like a different type of sand than I had in my 10g tank, which was caribsea aragonite. It almost looked like VERY fine crushed coral. This definitely just looks like sand lol.

So Im totally stuck right now. My sand keeps blowing around, the front middle part of my tank, along with the rear middle part of my tank are totally bare after a days worth of flow. My flow:

(2) 6080s in opposite rear corners. They are facing each other to point at the center of the front glass.

(2) 6045s I have them on the side of the tank, blowing at each other across the width of the tank. They are staggered, I put one closer to the front pain by about 4-5" so they dont cancel out their flow.

(1) return. I would imagine I have about 1000-1200 gph coming from the return pump. I dont have any nozzle, lockline, etc on the return. Its just a threaded hole in the back of my tank, that just blows out water.

Im curious if my problem is the return, since its not aimed anywhere, its just kind of going where it wants to go. I dont know how to solve this. I see you guys have TONS more flow than I do, and no problems with sand blowing. Ive repositioned every direction of the flow, everywhere possible.

Anyone have any tips?

My sand does this all the time right now...just need to wait until it gunks up a bit. I just use an algae scraper to push it back into the middle of tank every few days.

Thats where Im at right now. I use a long PVC pipe to push it back to the center. So you think it'll gunk up a bit? Its only been in there about a week (a week tomorrow actually).

So I may sell this tank coming up soon, assuming I can get a decent amount for it. If I can get $3k in return, I will have to do it. Im tired of the E30, its given me another problem, which I think is a fuel pump. I'm looking at either a TI or an E36 M3. If that happens, I'll end up moving some rock into my 60g, and just making that a tank of SPS.

Dont do it...think how much work you've put into it, just save up a little more for the car. A couple months patience and saving and you can have both ;)

Lol, Im just so frusterated with this car right now. I told Rachel my idea, and she totally shot it down. She basically said the same thing, except she knew Id regret selling the tank, and didnt want to hear me complain about regretting it lol. I think I am going to sell the 60g though, to help save up for something else.

Any on another note, I fired up that second lumenarc and Hamilton 14k today. I thought the look of the hamilton just "grew" on me.... Not so. This new 14k is SO BLUE its disgusting. The one on the left has a good couple months on it, and its nice and crisp white. Maybe the bulbs arent that bad, they just gotta be broken in.

Also, today I decided to make some more rock today, to kind of relax. I think this will turn out pretty good. I coated the outside of the rocks with the salt, like in the rock thread. So it should be nice and pourous, especially on the outside, so it should look more natural. These guys are going to be what hold up my current rocks, rather than an acrylic sheet and a PVC pipe. Also I made those little rocks with some dimbles in them the size of my pinky. So I can epoxy some SPS frags in them when they time is right.

Shes a keeper ;)

yes she is. Wedding is this September ;)

Now I know next to nothing about Calcium reactors. I get the general idea, I get how they work, and thats it. I dont know HOW to work them, or whats best to get. I was looking around, and this seemed to be a good deal on a reactor

http://www.saltysupply.com/Korallin-Calcium-Reactors-p/kl1021.htm

Does that seem like a nice price anda nice unit? I figure I should get the reactor before I stock the SPS. Dont wanna have to stock the SPS twice, since I killed em the first time, because there was no reactor. I basically want the most "self maintaining" one, while still in that price rang. I test very very little in my tank. I only test ammonia, nitrate and nitrite when things arent looking so hot. I liked how this kit said there wont be a need to monitor, basically it does it on its own.

Any advice?

I've heard the Korallin's can be a bit tricky to get setup. I'm thinking I'm going to get the AquaC RX-1 for my tank.
