Join me for a strange one...

Thanks for the ID! Now we know.

Update: As you all know - I've been frustrated by the Ammonia not cycling. I've been testing about every other day for ammonia but after dosing with Ace Hardware pure ammonia the level was OFF the chart somewhere above 8.0ppm. About 2 weeks after starting this the nitrite came up to 1.0ppm.

Work got hectic and I didn't test the water for three days instead of the usual two. So I tested it Friday and it was zero! After 4 weeks - three weeks above 8ppm the ammonia goes from 8+ to 0.0 in three days. That is a most impressive demonstration of geometric growth I've seen.

But, if I'm not perplexed by something then this build's not delivering the goods. :fun2:.

So now I have to fret over 1.0ppm of nitrite for weeks on end? What I find odd is that the ammonia has to go into nitrite but yet there was no reciprical increase in the nitrite - it continues to be 1.0.

The nitrates have been sitting between 10 and 5ppm for three weeks and didn't change with the loss of ammonia either. Wierd.

The feather dusters are still rocking out and now there are bristle worms lurking about. I guess the wait continues unless you guys have any other ideas.

Yeah... get your algae scrubber going!! :o

Might try using a more accurate test kit.

I like using Salifert kits, but elos kits get some good reviews as well.

Have you taken a water sample to your lfs to see if their results match yours?

Nick

Hi maxxII; The only LFS here is pathetic with a capital P.

After 3 days of not testing, the Nitrates have climbed up to 20ppm. With the crummy test kits showing the same color for 5 and 10ppm I was blind for two weeks so the "new color" of 20ppm shows the trite to trate cycle has been going fine. I think my trite test is busted and that's why it just sits there on 1ppm never changing. Anywho now I'm bringing up the temp in my old tank to match the new one. When they do I'll move Tang over to his knew digs. Woohoo! Then I can start decommissioning my old tank.

I guess I better start focusing on my ATS since the trates are on the build. My wave is still waiting.. I'm considering cutting down some of my existing 3/8" glass 55g tanks to make a sump. Of course the framing won't fit any longer. It would be about 20" wide 36" long, and about 16" high. I shouldn't need a frame should I?

A couple of hours later:
HE"S IN!!! He's looking pretty confused. 13years in one house then thrust into the great deeps.. LOL

I have my one proto LED fixture lighting the tank.

There... Now his cowery buddy is in too. Both of them have always eaten the mass of hair algae in the old tank. (Like a forest). Now this new tank is totally bare. I hope the cowery can find enough to eat..

Tang getting his bearings.

Here's a shot of it all:

Same Shot but twice the resolution.

Check out a healthy Tang's width is as compared to the annorexic looking ones normally seen.

Tang modeling for me. If you look closely you can see his blood running up his fins. Looks orange since you're seeing it thru bright yellow.

Now I have to get a sump/ATS going so this doesn't turn into a forest of algae.

I'll be powering the two sided ATS with 6 XMLs cranked close to their max using scattering off an interposed diagonal surface.

I also need a way to clean the window. Anyone got any favorites or links to something? We're talking 3/4" acrylic here.

Another question. Tang has always eaten tons of HA. This tank hopefully won't have it. Suggestions on what I might feed him as an alternative?

How are you connecting all of the jacks?

Look back at my posts 46-50 and you'll see what I did.

BTW your three linked pictures didn't happen because you tried to link us to a secure location and since we don't have passwords there will not be any pictures showing up. You need to use PUBLIC links that should be available at your picture host site.

My YT LOVES nori (I think thats what its called) and pretty much everything else I throw in the tank.

Nori. Thanks!

I wonder if lettuce would work too?

Dang he's fat! How much do you feed?

I have no idea since he's been surrounded by hair algae for several years. He's never been much on flake food.

Grats on the nitrates. Are you going to set up a mock 'jump' for your YT?

Naw.. To get his kicks he'll have to learn to surf now. :p

This is the first I've seen this thread. You are an amazing builder! Can't wait to see how this looks after a few months of growth...

Awesome! Kcress, you are a very talented and creative person. Just finished reading the whole thread. Really cool.

Wow! I've been following this thread from the beginning and am pretty excited to see livestock finally added. I love that it's the yellow tang that you've had f Aor years that was courageous enough to go through all those transitions from tank to tank everyday was the first resident of the new tank. All your hard work and planning is finally coming together to be one of the most high-tech and coolest tanks ever.

Thanks canesfan and srusso!

It's been fun watching Tang get familiar with this huge change. For the first day he just tried to get out of the 'place' going back and forth in a 12" x 12" space in the lower left corner.

Next day he tentatively ventured a few feet out of that area, making it almost to the center bottom of the tank.

Third day he could be seen anywhere in the bottom foot. After the first week he could be seen anywhere in the bottom 2 feet.

Third week he was racing everywhere, doing speed trials for the fun of it. Now he is everywhere master-of-his-domain. He weaves thru all the furniture including the stuff sticking off the back wall. He can be seen peering out of the ports on the big tower and uses the full 3 feet of height.

Other interesting aspects: Tang ignored any food offered the first week. I have never fed him since. Not once. The tank is going thru all sorts of weird algae phases. Currently there are patches of foot long brown hair algae here and there. I believe this is what he prefers eating as he hasn't lost a gram of weight.

I'm surprised by all the algae since I only attempted 3 feedings. I'm thinking the sand given to me had organics in it, but that's only a guess. I have zero filtration going at the moment.

I desperately need to get my new sump going so I can start yanking nitrates, etc. out. I've cleaned the best 55 from my old setup and am trying to devise how to work the ATS into it. I've completely designed several versions only to discover various show-stoppers. I have now settled on a horizontal cascading version. I have the screens CADed and the g-code for the router done I just need some acrylic to cut. I will be trying industrial white Velcro hook medium for the screen surfaces.

I need to saw a 2-1/2" hole in my 3/8" glass for my pump suction. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to get the saw?

I'll be showing the sump soon. Once I get the sump and ATS running I can start adding some new citizens. I don't want to add anymore bio load until then. I'll try to get a picture of the current situation in tonight.

Ebay has cheap hole saws Kcress.

Very interesting build :) Can't wait to see how it progresses now. I'll still be lurking along.
