question what is that bea-utiful fish

Maculiceps Tang or Spotted Cheek Tang.

They are pretty rare to come across, and for some reason, some look much different than others.

The one at my LFS looks like this: http://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productDetail.asp?did=1&pid=850&cid=287

I have a small (3") specimen in my display. I LOVE this fish.... And while it has wonderful coloration like Jr's, it does not look as prominent Jr's yet. But it will in about a year I hope ;)

Tang looks great! mine was always light colored in QT and once put in the DT colored up. Yours is stunning though! How big?

Also, I noticed mine "flashed" a white/black stripping once. It was even more stunning than the normal colors. Has yours done this by chance? My friend's (another tang) flashed once too another patter, irridescent also almost, not sure what causes it.

Thanks Guys. The Spotted Cheek is about 7-7.5 inches and about an 1.5 thick (a little obese). The Sailfin is really catching up to her in size. She been growing pretty fast, but I feed them a ton of food. Jim yours has the making of becoming a stunning fish. It seem that the larger they get the more prominent the colors become. I am not too sure if it is actually age or the foods we feed them.

Mine flashes a stunning indecent blue and yellow pattern when it gets challenged by the sailfin. You can see in some of the pics the scribe patten on its body is a sky blue, that part glows when she gets ticked.

That is a beautiful Spotted Cheek Jeremy. Like the tank build. Just started one of my own. A little late though. It has almost been a year. So what happened to the beautiful Dussimeir I gave you?

About time you visited my build thread. I guess you have been busy getting married and all. The tang I got from you ended up to be a blochi tang and did not get along with the Spotted Cheek. So it was brought up to Scotts.

What do you feed? I'm not happy w/ my food and I can't get them to eat spectrum.

that sounds right - beautiful! Wish I could get it on camera or see the flash under sunlight.

I know. It is about time. Did not even know you had this up. What planet have I been on:p I actually read the whole Orca 200 thread yesterday. Wow - 32 pages or something. I have to read this entire thread and get caught up on what you are doing. Yes planning the wedding in Hawaii took a lot of my time up. I have been frequenting RC more often lately.

I will get you a list tonight. I feed about 8-10 different flakes and pellets a day. Randomly throwing them in the water for around 15 minutes straight.

also, does your tang peck at the rocks? my hippo and spotted check never touch the rocks, they just follow me around the tank... you're a dang damnit! eat algae! (though the rock is pretty clean so that's probably part of it)

If there is any algae on the rock, overflows or pumps she pecks at it till it is gone. The Spotted Cheek and the sailfin searches the tank all day long for food, of course till I come up to the tank.

Both my dussumier and maculiceps pick at the rocks all day long. The purple tang doesn't bother though....

I swear that the maculiceps and dussumier are like a bottomless pit. All they want to do is eat and grow

I got mine at the link on pg 14 of this thread. Blue Zoo aquatics.

They're hard to come by, but they do come in. I'd call and talk with them about it. Thats what I did. Just ask to be notified as soon as they arrive :)

That's a good suggestion Jim. A couple of local stores have seen them on the list and order them only to receive mata tangs. Just have to know what you are getting and advise you get a actual pic of what you are getting.

This was posted by Chrisreef showing how hard it may be to get a real Maculicep

Just shows how hard it is to ID some fish...
