i've been reading this thread over the last two days, and it's probably one of the best i've ever read on this site.

your tank is incredible, and i believe i speak for everyone here when i say thank you for all the great information that you have laid out.

this thread is like a "how to" clinic for anyone with dreams of large reef tanks.

Thanks for the compliments. I have found by doing a tank build that it is an easy way to log my tanks progress over time.

I’ve been thinking in purchasing a new protein skimmer. I currently use the vs2-24 22 ½” tall from lifereef in my 75 gallon tank and was also used in my 180 gallon tank currently empty. Plan to build new system with the 180 with the 75 attach, to add more water volume. I am interested in the reeflo 200 and the 250 they sound pretty good. The lifereef skimmer works fine but I think with this volume + 30 gallon sump/refuge I need something better . My choice was the 250 but after reading your forums am not sure with to pick. Jose,

If you don't plan on upgrading any larger than say 300-350 gallons anytime in the future I would just go with the Reeflo 200. The 250 is a tad large for that size system. Honestly if I thought it would work well I would have went with the 250 my self.

The 250 works great on a small system. :D

Your system isn't small.
I guess you don't hear that too often.:p

Lighting: 3 Lumen Bright Mini Reflectors (15” off of the water surface)
3 Reeflux 12k lamps
Powered by 3 250 watt CoralVue dimmable ballasts JR, I was interested in if you still had the same lighting set-up, I'm especially interested in the height of bulb from the surface. Very motivating build.

amt68: Still the same lighting and don't plan on changing anytime soon. This is the best and and have had the most success with this lighting setup. My bulb is still at 15" off the water surface.

Thanks for the compliments Jaxspsreef.

hey JR, any idea how the reeflux compares to the XM 10k bulb in terms of PAR and coral growth?

Couldn't tell you. I have used xms a couple years back but on m58 ballast and did not like the life of the bulb or the results they produced but have not tried them on electronic ballasts. I really have not been to happy with any of my previous lighting till I started using Reeflux bulbs ran by electronic ballasts. I really don't have any plans on using another type of bulb besides reeflux because of the great success I have had with them. Xm 10ks are supposed to have a decent par and are one of the better looking 10ks IMO.

Thanks JR, I am gonna look around for the actual PAR ratings for the Reeflux 12k. I know that Sanjay found the XM 10k to be in the mid 500's, but I have yet to find his ratings on the reeflux.

I believe the par numbers for the 12k Reeflux on Jeremy's tank are somwhere in the lumenbright reflector thread.

Remember these # were taken in LB reflectors and using the bulbs recommended ballast.

wow, 40 pages...that'll take some time to get through. Thanks JR, I just got 4 LB large reflectors, and am gonna try out the XM bulbs, I see your PAR as high as 568 at the top, and your corals look great...so I am thinking it might be more about the look you like to have vs. PAR.

very interesting! Thanks for the info! From your measurements, it appears the Reeflux has the best PAR readings in true tank applications...the XM 10k has even higher par ratings than the EVC, but from your measurements I guess that doesn't matter really!

JR

Thanks for your advice. I don't think that i am going to upgrade any time soon. I think that am going with the 200, I'll be adding the pro kit to the skimmer.

thanks again...
