July BBQ with guest speaker Murry Camp!

We are planning to work out raffle items through bob to support our local LFS. I am hoping last months raffle items didnt set a bar we are going to perpetually have to pass. All donations are always welcome! I should be bringing a few things. For sale/ trade can be added here. Would be great to get more people there! I have never been to bobs and looking forward to seeing the store.

Im not 100% whether we can make it or not now due to our car. I will be happy to bring watermelon and bottled water if we can make it.

I didn't mean the club bringing raffle items by any means, I was going to bring some frags for the raffle , however usually the sales read says donations are welcome., I was unsure if there was a reason for the sale thread not being up. possibly due to the fact that it is at a store. so I hope my post wasn't misunderstood. :-)

No worries. We have a late breaking problem now with an unforeseeable circumstance necessitating moving the meeting back to the Lutz or elsewhere. Really trying to resolve over the next 24. Expect a separate post soon.

We have regretfully made the decision to CANCEL the July meeting. For members benefit the reasons for this included the sudden loss of venue, the extremely low signups, and as an extension of that a courtesy afforded to Mr Camp. Simply speaking it did not appear to be wise or respectful to ask the gentleman to travel cross country, sacrifice his weekend and time from his own family, to speak for a short period at a reset venue to a dozen and a half reefers. There may be an opportunity to bring him back in the fall. Before signing on to that we will need an idea of interest in the topic area. As it stands we dont have a great idea if people were disinterested in the venue, the bbq, the speaker and topic, etc. I have my own thoughts that summer simply presents too many conflicts.

Our apologies to those that were looking forward to this late cancel. We did entertain the idea of scrambling to invite other clubs, but I had concerns that this may position the club into some sort of second class status.

So we will regather our thoughts about where to go from here. We need input AND active participation of membership. That includes the "core" that we usually see at meetings and those who are new or on the cursory side of things. I plan to start another thread about what members want to see for future meetings, speakers, store/club days, fragging events, DIY events etc. We need to know if the raffles are driving factors for meeting attendance, and if they are, should they be. Its a valid question.

Some have also asked about the conference. We had decided in january to place our energies elsewhere this year. Part of this was due to issues around uncontrollable events like the weather. We now have some competing issues with other regional events in ny and ri, and coupled with vendor concerns about it being worth their while to show up. While it may seem great to get things on the cheap late in shows because of things like weather and attendance, that does not help to get people back the following year, economically speaking.

One thing that would help in that regard if we choose to pursue something next year would be our ability to tell folks about our average meeting attendance. We cant expect much if we say we brought in a speaker from Dallas to talk with a few members of the BOD and a few handfuls of others.

Summer is a weird time for reefing. I myself am going on vacation this weekend , i think the attendence at meetings in the summer months can attest to why there was a low signup for this event.

Maybe more notice will allow people to move there schedules around.

Either way the event was a great idea and i'd definatley attend if it had worked for my schedule.

there was months of preparation for this on this board, and so plenty of notice.

I am very saddened to see the lack of interest in this event, I am part of this club not for the reefing but the friendships I have made over the course of being a member so seeing the club spending well earned money on speakers and barbecue and no one showing up is very disappointing. I know everyone has lives outside this club however I feel being part of it would also be giving some interest . the last I checked I don't think there was half a year or four month memberships. this is a real bummer. and as far as a conference, I don't think anyone really cares about Rhode Island or Boston we are Connecticut and always have been.

Im definitely bummed about this too. I was looking forward to meeting the speaker and hearing what he was gonna talk about. And of course the bbq too, lol

I know it stings a bit, but don't let this get you too down. CTARS isn't the only club that's had to cancel an event, especially at this time of year.
CTARS is still one of the most active clubs on Reef Central, and I have personally seen acts of kindness and friendship in this forum that just blew me away.

It definitely stinks. I couldn't make it anyway because I'm in Aruba right now :) but it was a cool idea and would definitely have come if I was there. I think it is impressive that the club can attract such speakers but I totally agree with canceling it if interest isn't high enough. I think a thread on what people would like to see for future meetings is a great idea. Lets get some more consistent attendance. The meetings really are useful and it's always great to be around other reefers.

very true I agree with the cancellation just unfortunate to see lack of interest.

A little background...Murray had originally been scheduled to talk to us a CMAC last year. Due to Hurricane Sandy, he had to back out. His plane ticket was about to expire so we for months tried to find a date that would work. By day, Murray is a trial lawyer and he spends many weeks (and weekends) away in court. Finding weekends that he is free can be challenging.

Sounds to me like this was our last chance. Twice now we've canceled on him. Seems unfair to him aswell...

I look forward to being an active member once I'm up in CT! I would have gone to this but I won't be up there until August.

Evil, when are you going o be up?

Saltychick, we will get another chance. Murray is looking forward to getting up here.

Would have loved to make it to this but we are in NH on vacation with the kiddo..

I still have yet to make it to my first meeting! I know this meeting is canceled but will there be another in July? Or just wait till August now?

Ugh, wish I could have committed to this. Unfortunately, I had a prior obligation. I WILL be coming to more meetings and THIS TIME I mean it. ;-)
