Jumping fish Vs. Cross brace.

I am worried about putting wrasses in my tank because I'm think they will land on the cross brace.

Does anyone have a cross braced tank with any type of fish that likes jumping. If so what have you done to keep them from landing on the cross brace? Would love some photos and ideas.

I tried eggcrate on my 55 gallon and some fish still seemed to somehow make it through. Plus it seemed the eggcrate could do some substantial damage to a wrasse's head/body as he jumped into it.

The canopy is completely enclosed. I agree that a screen or egg crate will work but the inside of the hood is fairly clean looking and I think that will be annoying to look at and work around. Plus will cut my already low PAR numbers. I don't think my SPS will make it if PAR drops any. I'm at about 210 PAR now.

I was thinking of two angled pieces of lexan clear plastic. Anybody tried that?

I had a similar setup - enclosed canopy and, in my case, a large glass brace on a 180. I never had a fish die on top of the brace. Whether one landed there and then squirmed its way back into the tank, who knows, but no fatality. I'd be inclined to not worry about it.

I might give it a try with the wrasse without any cover. I've seen my old dart fish jump out of the tank and back in.

The pond netting sold by Drs Foster and Smith will not interfere or affect the light going into your tank (look under the pond section for it).

Thank you guys for all the ideas. I have all the materials to start fabricating some fish guards that will double as mounting bracket for auto fish feeder. I hope they work . Thank you again for all the good ideas.

With that center brace I wouldn't risk not having covers if your going to keep wrasses. I had that same brace on my old oceanic 120 and even with covers on both sides I had a labouti find its way onto the top of the brace. You could use the brs screen kits to construct a screen for each side. With two screens they would probably be easy to pull out when you flip open your canopy.

BRS sells 1/4" nylon screening which is smaller than the stuff Drs. Foster & Smith carries. I used that along with a screen kit (from Home Depot) to make my screens. Works great, and doesn't impact the lighting.
