Junior's Reef

*this thread will help to record the latest developments in my reef aquarium from June 2010 going forward*

After the success of my first reef aquarium (a 75 gallon back in the early '90's) there was the 225 gallon "Gary's Reef" followed by "New Canvas" which has evolved into Junior's Reef.
Junior is the nickname I gave my Emperor Angelfish.
"Junior's Reef" is a 72"long x 24"wide x 30"high 225 gallon glass aquarium.
Lighting and filtration are the same as those on the "New Canvas" aquarium.
Many questions and pictures (as well as video) about my system can be found in my New Canvas thread on RC.

If i didnt know any better i would think that was the same tank... beautiful gary !! junior looks great as do the rest of the reefs residents..!

thanks, Will.
A lot of my corals got fragged and broken up during the transfer so I'm pretending my reef aquarium got hit with a typhoon :)

I'm happy too see/read that your transfer was a success. Did you observe any of the inhabitants as being stressed from the move?

Yay for Junior's thread!
Aquarium looks awesome as usual Gary. Maybe we should make the typhoon your namesake - Gary, the gentle typhoon :) He's the kind of typhoon that picks up the pieces and puts them back together again nicely.
Any chance of an FTS???

Awesome!

Has the gigantea stayed put for you? (even though its location may not be your first preference!) If I recall, didn't you have it on a little rock "island" on the far end of the peninsula? Did you attempt the same type of placement? For creatures that don't have brains, they sure seem to have minds of their own! :D

Things are looking great! I'm looking forward to watching this thread develop over time.

I'll do a FTS over the weekend.

Trying to keep informative... everything was stressed during the move even though great precautions were taken to make things go as smoothly as possible. Junior was probably one of the least stressed critters during the transfer and he allowed me to move him around without any struggles but those Tangs put up a fight!
Acropora appeared very stressed in the days after the transfer and are still in the process of coloring back up.
I'm very grateful for everyone's support and especially thankful to those that helped me move aquariums.
I have a feeling that Junior's Reef is going to be even better than the old canvas :)

Nice job with the tank. Your anemone looks huge in that 2nd picture. For whatever reason I didn't think it looked any were near that size in your other tank from the pictures. Just awesome looking...

thanks, Scott. You're right- gigantea is now in a new location. In the "canvas" aquarium it was on a rock island on the sandbed- now it's on the main reef. This anemone doesn't seem to move a lot on it's own so (hopefully!) it will stay put where it is. It certainly disproves the common belief that gigantea require a sandbed. It stung me pretty good during the transfer. FWIW it was first out and last in during the move and isolated in it's own tub of water (with Clowns) so other animals weren't harmed by it.

Love the new name! Junior is just so deserving of his own thread lol Anyhow I agree Gary I believe this new set up is going to blow the others away! If that's even possible?

Gary how many years have you had the PBT? He is just beautiful!!!

Very nice Gary good job to all that made this happen. Nice to finally see some shots of the new Junior’s reef

Thanks. I've had the PBT for around 3 years or so. I believe it's a male. He's extremely aggressive and very lucky that he ended up in Jr.'s Reef.

Looks like things will recoup very nicely for you Gary. In that first pic, I love how the torch is framed by the monti cap. Your fragged up coral are still larger than most of my pieces.

Gary - do you have a lot of "turf wars" between the corals? I'm still new and learning who will Attack who. This is a worry in the new tank when it comes to placement of frags...

here's a simple rule to go by:

anybody will attack anybody. It's survival of the fittest.
You want Acropora to be dominent in your aquarium?
Recreate the environmental conditions in which Acropora thrive in nature.

If you're looking at the Torch and the Montipora ....the Torch will sting the Montipora if it chooses to go that direction (which it hasn't for several months. Torch wants to grow upwards.)

does not seem as the ur tank missed a heartbeat, looks amazing as always :)
pictures are clear and crisp, is this due to the new type of glass?
