Just Got a Boxer Crab!

Well mine does'nt have her eggs any more. I isolated her in a critter carrier with sand and live rock. I have not seen any babies yet. I hope they are just too small to see.

Any progress?

So last night I chased my Boxer Crab with a moon light on his adventure throughout my aquarium :) It was about 12 at night and he left his usual home and was traversing all over the tank, which was really cool because I was able to see him doing the "mopping" thing with the anemone's :p I am definitely going to get another one a.s.a.p.

Dolphin Pet Village, Campbell CA :) ... they had another one but I bet he's gone by now! Really awesome crab ... so much character and deviance in behavior from your standard hermit.

I don't recommend purchasing fish there because they are Pan-Ocean a.k.a. cyanide caught ... however they have an awesome propagation tank(s) with many many frags and also a awesome selection of inverts and anemone's. They usually get stuff in on Tuesdays or Thursdays ... however you'll have to fight me for the cool stuff :lol2:

"I don't recommend purchasing fish there because they are Pan-Ocean a.k.a. cyanide caught ... "

Quite an acusation!

Dont want to start a war, but how can you be 100% sure that all the fish from that dealer are cyanide caught. Something more credible then "my friend told me so". BTW, every LFS in the SF Bay Area buys from this dealer. I know who the overseas dealers are and can say that a majority of them are IMAC certified.

Hey Tyler! First of all I am a liberal so no WaR! Please also don't be offended ... these are my observations, opinions, and experiences.

Well since you work there you might know better; yet still doesn't change the fact a lot of the fish I've seen bought or bought myself from your store simply die fast whatever the cause ... The lighting in the fish tanks is poor and you can't even see that some times tangs or other fish have ich :( ... I brought ich home from DPV for the first time and wiped out all my fish. Many of my friends who reef have experienced similar problems with fish death, no appetite, or disease ... even pop-eye disease. This simply leads us to think that these fish are exposed or caught in an irregular way!

The amount of Ich reports even on the DPV Reef Club Forum that these fish develop makes everyone assume quality problems.

Also Not all Bay Area LFS' buy from Pan-Ocean ... some buy from Sea Logic (local warehouse also poor quality as many warehouse's, I'm sure you're familiar with it) and others ship out of L.A. I too have an inside source to dealers, vendors, and wholesalers as one of the LFS owners in the South Bay is my buddy who is very honest, an admirable trait in this business.

That being said ... I Greatly endorse your Propagation Tanks and always ALWAYS, recommend buying frags there not to mention inverts like this one! So please don't think I am just trash talking DPV because there are + / -'s and the +'s out weigh the negatives still ... I think since YOU personally take care of the prop tanks they look absolutely amazing however I don't think anyone especially cares for the fish in the old tanks :( For example there was a new guy that bagged my Red Tree Sponge that I posted on the DPV forum and he bagged it with air ... ok ok honest mistake I can live with it and I asked him to fill it full with water but it's just an example. I recently went with a buddy and he really wanted a Hector's Goby ... so we went ahead and bought it ... wth it's only $20 some dollars. He was very skinny when we saw him at home and obviously didn't have enough copepods and amphipods to eat at the store. He is still alive thanks to a refugium stuffed with pods. SO far so good. I haven't bought fish from you since at least 2 years perhaps things have changed... inform me and perhaps I will spread the new word?! I realize it is often better to ask the store owner rather than @$$-u-me from the previous experiences, however they always seem to take it personally and it hinders a good relationship between the customer and store. Meaning they'll never cut you a deal or sell you something they like or aren't "done" propagating. So it's a catch-22 ... anyway I am rambling. Please let me know your stance ... I am all ears

Thanks for sharing your view on the subject.

Here is my take on the issue at hand:

Yes the systems were pretty bad before I decided to come back to the store full time and leave my other profession. The fish were not in the best of shape and there was not any sort of a selection. The section needed to be "revisited" for lack of a better term, in that we needed to re-evaluate what was wrong fix it and make it better. In the past the only fish that were being ordered were fish that were bread and butter and not exactly the most ideal fish for many aquariums. Realizing that the business needed some serious work, I put HOURS and HOURS into redoing the filtration systems, revamping the aging "reef" tanks and establishing a new maintenance schedule. The initial stages of that took over 9 months and blood sweat and tears to get it to the stage that I could say it was presentable. Six months later I added the first of the larger reef tanks in the middle of the section then adding a new one over couple months once I could show that they were a good thing.

The quality of fish just plain stinks from our original dealers in the area. I laid it down to them being as it is that we are one of two of the longest lived stores in the Bay Area once Nippon closed. 42 years in the business says alot about the people running it and the way that business is conducted. Oh BTW, may family as run the store since day one and I am co-owner, so I do take things personally as it is a reflection of what I do and have done. I digress......I laid it down to the dealers and said that they need to do something about the quality and dont BS me about where they fish is from or how it is caught. Those dealers who did not show me point blank that what they were selling was good never got orders from me. There was one dealer in the Bay Area (remains nameless) who sent me emails and faxes atleast once a week if not more to try and get me to buy from them. Not only did I not trust that dealer I did not like the way that when I was read off a sheet that the fish were net caught and asking to see the sheet so I could read it myself, I was denied. Red flag?? This person has since given up and leaves me alone. But getting back to the meat of the side thread, I/we try our best to provide the best most healthy and ethical choices in fish and inverts in the bay area. Ever notice the absence of Butterflys (minus Copperbands) Sharks, Large Angelfish, Large Eels, wild caught clowns? I personally feel that many of these creatures, excluding the wild clowns, have a difficult time finding proper housing in 99% of peoples aquariums. Almost 100% of the clowns, dottybacks and neon gobies in the store are captive bred. Sure wilds are half the cost, but the end cost of habitat destruction and overfishing greatly outweighs any monetary costs. Do you honestly think that someone who would make such drastic business decisions and limiting money comming into a business would knowingly allow sick fish, ie cyanide caught, to be sold or purchased? I look out for what I think is the right thing to do that is why we are doing all the propagation and breeding as many fish as we can. People are generally the problem not part of the solution, I would like to reverse that!

Thanks for the kudos on the prop system, wait till you see what I have planned for the next couple years!!! Your socks WILL be blown off!!!

Well I hope that this brought some clarity to the situation now that is is off both of our chests.

Thanks

Very honest & satisfying answer ... I greatly appreciate it :)

The significant decline in quality of everything was happening when you weren't around, this is what ruined the stores reputation with many reefers at the time. I was thrilled when I first walked in and the 1st Prop tank was up ... because someone (you) had finally taken interest in bringing salt back up to par and beyond.

I'm glad we both got that out of the way :p ... and believe me I've noticed the change in the past year and that is why I come back ritually every 2-3 weeks to pick up coral! I'm in this hobby for the long-run so I cannot wait to see what you get set up! At least give me a hint of what's to come :p

Anyway Tyler I apologize if I offended you in anyway, I seriously thought you were only in charge of the coral prop tanks because that's where the quality seems to be :) I'll try to purchase my next fish from DPV to show my newly re-vamped support ;)

Oh and remember if you ever need help ;) I work for frags :lol2:

Ok here is your hint ...... and only one hint ........ but it's still in planning stages. Think 2500 square feet of aquaculture (rock, coral and fish).

what LFS did you find it? None around northern bay area has any, ever =(

I was in the Alameda area at New Alameda Aquatics a couple weeks ago with my local club for a frag swap there. While we were there me and my friend found two boxer crabs sitting in a tank, so we bought them both. You might check there. www.newalameda.com the guys there are great.

I would post a pic, but I put my boxer crab in two weeks ago, and didn't see him for over a week, figured he didn't make it. But then was moving some rock around the other day in the tank, and the little bugger ran right over the top of my hand and disappeared again.
They are fast and they are really, really good at hideing. I haven't seen him since, I even took my red flashlight out a couple time in the middle of the night to look for him, but nothing.

I really like this crab, but really hate the fact that I never see him.

Ok, what is really funny right after I made that last post I went past my aquarium and there he was, so I ran and grabbed my camera, and my whole tank minus my skunk shrimp decided to pose.

I did notice my boxers anemoneas are missing though, he had both when I bought him, and still had them last time I seen him, but now they are gone. Does he grow them back I hope?

Sorry not the best picture, I hadn't cleaned my glass yet today.
