He looks cool as hell !!!

I assume he's reef-safe as he's just chillen in the green stars ??

Yea they are Reef Safe! Very easy to keep and they are peaceful! He actually will mop the substrate wth the anemone's to pick up detritus and left over food. When I dropped him in he landed on the GSP's so I immediately got the camera! Right now he has found a home in a cool rock hole :D

Best thing he was only $10.99

I almost bought 1, 1 time.... the lady at the fish store was like look he is holding little anenomes... and maybe you can answer the question the LFS lady couldnt....

Where does the crab get the little anenomes if the tank he is in , has no anenome in it?

The best I can do is a lamens explanation ...

They pick anemone's up in the wild probably close to where the crabs are reproduced ... it's a symbiotic relationship between them. The crab should keep them from the first time he finds 'em. What they do is they drop them on a rock and quickly molt so they can pick 'em back up and go about detritus business. If the crab has just 1 then he'll close his pinchers in a way to force the anemone to split into 2! However if you purchase a crab with no anemone's then, I am not sure but I think you're kinda screwed; hence don't buy one without anemone's :( Those are used for him to pick up food and fend predators off with so he most likely will not live :P

ChupaKabra: Thanks man I hope you find one some day :)

I got a boxing crab aka pom pom crab about a month ago. When I bought him he did'nt have any anemone's but the other day she came out and had one in both claws. She also had a huge egg sack under her belly. Looks like I'll be have lots of boxing crabs soon.

Where do you suppose he got the anemones, could they be aiptasia or majano would the crab even carry these? Excellent on the reproduction, can you say fish and coral food.

I dont know where she got them. I had a couple of annoying glass anemone's in my tank. I thought I had killed them off but maybe not. Thats the only thing I can think of. When I bought her I even said she does'nt have the anemones. The guy at the lfs said she would grow them. Oh well I guess I'll find out when the babies hatch.

I doubt they are Aiptasia like Anemone's because Aiptasia stings without sticking where as these are sticky and sting ...

Reefreak ... lemme know/take pictures of what's happening! It would be a really interesting thread on these sparse crabs!

I got one of these as a hitchiker on my LR, I had already planned on trying to keep one, so I was EXCITED when I saw it in the bottom of the Box the Liverock was in, got a porcelain crab as well. Very cool little crabs. Came home last night and saw my pom pom crab on the sand looking very pale, then realized it was his molt. He is doing well so far, only been a week and a half, he only had one anemone when i first got him, like second day he had two, although I noticed last night he only had one after the molt. Have not seen him tonight, he is a shy little creature, hoping he makes it thru my tank cycle.

Broog, keep up with the water changes during the cycle to keep the ammonia levels down, and you should be able to keep them alive.

Well live rock was pretty much cured, but tank is going thru a mini cycle, amonia is already down to 0, So I think they will be okay. Ordered new light today, Tank has done really well so far.

... still alive and doing well; no molt yet ... he's found a cave in a LR he likes and it's very close to the front of the tank so I can keep an eye on him :p

Its nicknamed the pompom crab as when it feels its threatened it grabs anything fluffy and shakes it about! Like off Nemo EY EY EY EY!!!!!

Unfortunately they tend to stay there 90% of the time. I got a boxer crab as a hitch-hiker on LR about 6 months ago, luckily i know where his hole is and he comes out only when it is completely dark. I view him with a red filtered flashlight. They are VERY secretive and stay in their hole for weeks on end. Mine is doing well though and once they find a "burrow" they stick to it. They are so agile and dextrous compared to clumsy bumbling hermits. Best of luck with your new crab, i hope he is more social than mine!

I got him at a LFS ... he seems pretty sociable and even though he's in his cave he'll often times move around in the cave. When things have calmed down at a late hour he'll come out and do a lil' bit of mopping! I hope he'll become a permanant addition to my reef with his dexterity and intelligence :p

Well mine does'nt have her eggs any more. I isolated her in a critter carrier with sand and live rock. I have not seen any babies yet. I hope they are just too small to see.
