Hello all

So I bought a juvinial sailfin tang yesterday... Ive never kept any fish except clowns.

It went directly into quarentine.

Tonight I noticed 1 small white dot on its back fin and 1 small white dot on a side fin.

Going to wait for more spots before I go doseing with copper..
but Im not familier with tangs at ALL. and this fish has such strange markings its a bugger to notice ANYTHING on its body.

Am I right in assuming this is probley going to be an ick outbreak? Is there anything special I should know about tangs?

This guy is extreamly thin. But has been eating like a cow for the last 24 hours

(spirilina flake, red algea sheet, leaf lettece, emerald entree, even a TON of mysis) so I think its going to be ok with a lil TLC.. just need some reassurance theres no over funk a tang may get on its fins

It MIGHT be breathing heavy. Its not hanging near the surface or acting strangly as far as i can tell.... ( wouldent truely know) but its gills seem to be moving pretty fast.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

And yep. my sig says i have a 45 gallon tank. Getting a 125 in about 3 weeks. and the tang is about 1 1/2 inches if its lucky right now. so he'll b ok. as long as I get the right treatment

thanks
maggie

Avoid the copper.

When you go to feed, soak the food in some Kent Garlic for about 20 minutes. Any tang I have had, this has helped. It doesnt kill the ich, but helps keep the ich from attaching to the fish. Its like an immune booster. Continue to feed him lots of Algea with a variety of foods.

what type of sailfin? If it is a red sea species, dont keep it hyposaline too long. I have seen many desjandini and purple with wicked HLLE which I belive is from hyposalinity.

really? I started to lower the salinity. I was doing it really really slow. im only down to 1.023 so far.

this morning the 2 white dots were still present, but no more.
I fed it garlic in the morning, and selcon this afternoon. the white spots are gone... im just going to try to get it to relax and build its immune system. and continue with the garlic.

I have a lil fake cave in qt and everytime im within ten feet of the tank it hides. (unless food is added) im trying to get it used to me.

Its the regular sailfin. (central and south pasific)
not the indian ocean one. Ill take a picture of it tonight when im feeding. its remarkably beautiful :) just a lil guy.

got some pics. 2 turned out not blurry.. took about 15 lol

hes a lil smaller than the vegi clip :D look healthy enough? seems they change quite a bit from juvi to adult...

WOW, thats small.

Each time I used garlic, it only took a day or so for the ich to come off the fish.

I'm going to disagree with the anti-copper folks. I'll be using cupramine (widely held to be much less harsh for the fish than other copper treatments) in my QT. Hyposalinity will do nothing for marine velvet, another commone fish parasite with a similar, but accelerated, life (or should I say, death) cycle.

Yes, I had a velvet outbreak! So I'm justifiably paranoid about that.

At any rate, lots of people use cupramine successfully with no ill effects.

no the dot is gone. it was ick or velvet.. looked like ick to me.. had it once when i first started the hobbie

well I came to feed her a lil while ago and somthing is stuck to its lip. it isent a cocoapod it looks transparent like her skin or somthing. but its not stopping it from eating.. wish it would 'fall off' or somthing

Be sure and keep the aeration up: tangs can suffer without really high oxygen content; likewise keep your temp 80ish, not higher, for the same reason.

Congrats! He's beautiful.

i have an aquaclear 20 hanging on the back. think i should add a 400 maxi jet or somthin? temps an even 80. main tank is 82 so i dont want it to be to different for later

OOOPS:D Had to edit

Just made a comment on this fish going in a 45:D
Didn't see the upgrade...It will eventually outgrow the 125, but you have time

marine fishes says 135 gallons... If it outgrows it, ill have to find it a new home :( but its gotta take at least 2 years.... right?? :D

It was wicked what I was told when buying this fish! I know enough about tangs that they DONT go into 45 gallon systems. the rat at the store treated me like a newbie, fine. But he acted like this sailfin would be happy 4 life in a 45. ugh. makes me mad.

oh. i went to the zoo yesterday. check these guys out! I want a powder blue now too... probley shoulda just asked for a job lol

wow, yeah they do get big!!

ok. So its been about exactly two weeks, and the ick came on twice as strong. (still not a ton.. but theres at least 10 dots just on the tail fin)
Cant see any on the body.. but her markings make it incredibly hard to see.
Breathing slightly heavy agian. So I dosed with copper :(

Question....
I have/had a bio filter in an aquaclear from my main tank.
Copper kills all the beneficial bacteria.... right?

So I just need a refresher course....
Do I need to do alot of small water changes now that theres no bene. bacteria? How much how often you think?
Its a ten gal. tank.
water changes would come from my main tank....

thanks for any help
