Just got back from Suffolk County Fish & Reef...

I am on the mailing list (signed up on the website) and got a 20% off any fish coupon so I decided to stop in.

Alot of really nice stuff! They have a really nice challice coral and a bunch of pink and blue zoos. Lots of great pieces of coral and some really cool fish. I almost grabbed a pair of scissor tail gobys, but I had too many stops to make and am leaving on a trip tomorrow. I hope they will stil be there when I get back.

Just goes to show you the difference a quality store can make in our hobby. Plus, as usual, everyone there is very nice & friendly.

got all the livestock for my 125 from there and absolutly love it great ppl and are realy concered about it living in your tank not just making a sale
 
ug green center with orage skirt zoo rock 5 inchs 100 dollers large purple leather 70bucks red grogoina 30 bucks large pipe organ 70 dollers single mushrooms 20 a bit pricy but can beat the selection and cant wit till i can try some sps cuz they have some amazing peices

I don't think there is another discount on top of that one. But Dave, I saw those scissortail gobies the other day and almost picked one up myself. Will stop by tomorrow for a fish for my new 2.5g nano--
 
I have been buying from local stores for 20 years. You get what you pay for. I would rather pay a little more for something that is not going to die.

And, the coupon was for 20% off this time...I would suggest getting on the mailing list (it is an e-mail list). I got the coupon last week in time to get there for the weekend.

But really folks, you can get better deals for nicer stuff on-line.

Sure, you have to pay shipping, but when you buy a sizeable order it evens out.

Someone should open a reef store that sells their corals at decent prices, even the nice ones. They'll clean up.;)
How do you think Aquahut did it? It wasn't their sparkling atmosphere.
 
I've been to SCFR a couple of times. Their prices scare me off.

"You get what you pay for" really only goes so far, Dave. I am all for supporting your LFS, but these guys are too much in line with Country Critters, who is not in line with reality at all.
I hope the store makes it, but IMO, doing so is going to require rethinking their pricing policy.
 
i stoped into critters today to get dog bones and they have a ric rock for 350 dollers its huge there about 15 blue peices on it they also have a hawiian dragon moray for 3 grand and a couple of diff sharks if any one is innterested i myself walked out with a orange a blue ric then went to scfr and got a hammer and plate ill get pics when i get a chance and yea those sissor tail gobies are prity cool
 
I agree with Larry. Fish and Reef is right around the corner from me, and yes they are nice there. It is convenient for me to make a quick run for supplies.

When it comes to prices, they do seem to feel they can match country critter without having as much stock available.

Although I do buy from Fish and Reef, I often end up making the drive to Aqua Hut much more frequently, especially for bulk buys. Aqua Hut's prices for drygoods and livestock are significantly lower.

Joe is a good guy and I am glad he opened his store.

I think Joe would do a lot better if he lowered his prices even a little bit.
 
I finally saw Aquahut on Friday. I didn't have time to go inside, but I know where he is now.
I'll get in there soon.
As for SCFR, I agree that lower prices would at least get me in there more often. They're close enough to work for me to drop in there pretty regularly.
 
SCFR is really high on drygoods, but you can find some decent prices on livestock if you look around a bit.

They have a frag tank that's off to the side with $25 and $35 pieces. At CC for example, you'll get zoa frags at those prices that have 5 to 6, or 8 to 10 polps. I picked up a pair of 2" x 3" 100 polp colonies of green and orange zoas for the same price at SCFR.

They aren't bad on shrimps and cleanup crew animals either. In the last two months I've purchased 3 Camel, 3 peppermint and 3 cleaner shrimp. The Camels and Peppermints were $9, the cleaners $24. All are still alive and kicking.

Like CC, they are outrageous for supplies. I still make my weekly pilgrammage to Aqua Hut for everything else..

PS- For any of you who may also keep African Cichlids, SCFR is also suprisingly reasonable in that categorey as well. They usually have some different young Calvus, Compressiceps, haps etc at good prices....
 
We all get some stuff on line. I am always impressed when I go in to that store. Mostly with the freindly attitude.

I have gone to several other stores, CC & AH included, and have not been treated well on many occasions.

I look at it this way - if you get some good advice and are well taken care of, that is sometimes worth a premium. If there is something way out of line (pricewise) then either say something or buy elsewhere.

Anyway, I think I may be going back to get the scissor tail gobys this weekend if they are still available.

Thanks for the heads up on the Camel Shrimp, but what organisms are they unsafe to house with? I had a half dozen in my prior reef tank and they never bothered anything.

I'm hoping you are talking about SPS corals as I've never kept them. Everything in this tank is softies, zoas or shrooms. So far as I can tell, the Camels haven't touched them...
 
I take my son to scfr and cc quite a bit - whenever we drive by.

I look at them more as attractions than stores, and try to drop a few bucks there in appreciation. I figure if I spend $20 extra or so, its an admission fee.

But, when I buy expensive stuff, there's no way I can justify buying there. Whether its fish (cheaper and better from online - at least at cc where the fish are ragged) or drygoods (CC wanted $210 bucks for a bucket of Rowalith CR media - Marine Depot $70 w/ $5 shipping!) or corals (dont get me started), its just ridiculous. I'd rather just put a $20 on the counter each time I walkout to say thanks, and buy all my stuff elsewhere.

I hope they read these threads, although I assume they understand this already and are making a business decision. IMHO, they should have a tiered schedule to keep "addicts" buying locally - thats what I do with my store - regulars get serious discounts.
