Just got my 1st anemone

I wish it were light so I can show a picture... I'll post one tomorrow. My favorite ( and only ) saltwater fish store in Reno, NV. CLOSED the other week so I was forced to go to petcoo! (I know it's not spelled that way) :( But surprisingly, I found this anemone that was pretty cool looking. It has long transparent green tentacles that are purple on the inside, and a pinkish-orange foot. I placed it on top of a piece of LR, and it only took 10 or so seconds for it to stick itself to it. Of course, it didn't like it there, so it slowly moved to the edge of the rock that I set it on and is now hanging off the side. It seems to like it there, cause it's not moving any more.

So.... what do I feed it? I feed the clown fish and blue tang a mysis mixture every day. Will it survive off of that, or does it need more?

What kind of Anemone is it? It makes a big difference in care.

I won't state the obvious rule violation of buying an animal without having done any research on it...wait, i guess i just did.

I have absolutely no idea what kind it is. Maybe somebody here can help me with that.

Considering it was doomed anyways sitting in those tanks at petco, and looking at it now 3 days later after it has more than tripled in size, I'd say I made a good choice. It's eating properly, and seems to look happy, at least a LOT happier than it did at petco. Here is an okay photo of it. Sorry about the quality, I took it with my iphone. You cant see the orange foot.

I usually refuse to purchase fish from petco, but there is no longer any salt water fish stores in Reno, NV.

Also, I found out what they eat.... ANYTHING! Raw shrimp, scallops, unsuspecting fish that don't have the same protection as clown fish, anything! It's pretty cool to see them react to whatever you put in front of them. All of the tentacles go crazy and instantly go to the food to help capture it.

My little clown fish has fallen in love with this anemone. It swims through it all day long. It does something really strange though. It will suck the tip of the tentacles into it's mouth, chew them a little, and spit them out undamaged. Cleaning it perhaps?

It sort of looks like an LTA ( Macrodactyla doreensis ). Does it have any bumps on the underside of the oral disc?

It appears to be slightly bleached but not too bad.

What type of lights do you have? (( and what lights was it under? ))

Also, LTA, prefer to be in/on the sandbed, how deep is yours?

I agree LTA. Feed it pieces of silverside or Krill. Mysis will work too I'm sure. I know it s not the topic of the thread but having a Blue Tang in a 55 tank is a no no. I hope you are feeding it Nori as well as Mysis. They require Nori or other seaweed as a staple part of their diet. They also need alot more swimming room than a 55 can provide.

I agree with LTA as well. I also agree with the Petco statement. An LTA is a great hosting anemone, but they get BIIIIG. I have one that we bought from BZA and it was 2 inches across the disk. That was 18 months ago...now it is about 18 inches across and host to two beautiful blue stripe clowns.

I agree with the ID above. This anemone really need a sand bed to be happy and can grow rather large.

I am suprised, pretty nice anemone you got from Petco, theirs are usually in much worse condition.

Yeah they are usualy very near death, it makes me very sad to see things like this.

It was in much worse condition. It was about 2.5 inches across when I got it. 3 hours after I put it in my tank, it was about 6" across.

It climbed down the rock and started to burro itself in the sand bed, but it wanted to be underneath the large piece of LR that it was on, so it started to attempt to move the LR and it knocked it completely over. I'm going to have to try to get it off of the LR that it's on and place it directly on the sandbed. They aren't too easy to get off of what they are stuck on. I'd probably damage it. I'll just have to wait it out.
