Just LOVE new tank syndrome lol

The initial cycle is finally over after 3 weeks and it actually worked out amazing in regards to time. I ended up picking up a small unicorn tang, cucumber, and sixline wrasse from a fellow reefer that had to tear down and i put them into the newly cycled tank. Everyone seems so happy other than me dealing with the d*** diatoms on the glass and sand bed. Just wanted to relieve some stress by filling in everyone else lol.

I upgraded from a 75 to a 180 almost 4 months ago and I am still dealing with diatoms, I have to clean glass twice a day.

this was yesterday. a little brown if i do say so myself

Uhm, I still do not think a 45g tank is big enough for him. I wouldnt put him in my 90g. Maybe a 180.
How long has the 45g been up? What filtration equipment do you have? :hmm1:

calm down i didn't need the tang police to show up lol. I actually saved him out of a 29 gal. i couldn't believe he was in there. i'm also in the process of setting up a 180 at my uncles where he will eventually stay. but for right now hes only about 3 inches long (not very big) and he seems happy to be in a slightly bigger tank with less inhabitants.

Unicorn tangs get BIG... up to two feet long. I wouldn't consider one, even in a six foot long tank.

I was battling diatoms until I cleaned the glass, then immediatley syphoned most of the water out. Worked pretty good and haven't had to clean my glass for a week now. Maybe I just timed it right and they burned themselves out.

What's weird is that I set up a tank that's plumbed into my established reef... and I'm going through a diatom bloom on the new tank. Even though it's one big shared water volume, I'm getting the usual algae cycles on my glass and sand.

EVERYBODY CALM DOWN!!! i completely understand they get BIG!!!!!! but i couldn't see him in a 29 gal, plus i got him really cheap. He'll be fine for the time being, they stay in cramped tanks at the lfs, he'll be okay for a short while.

milhouser, i think i might try that when i do my next water change thursday or friday. sounds like a good idea in my book.
