grr. These mantis are driving me up a wall! First, I found one in a rock, then the same or another in another rock, then a third, or the same, in yet another rock on the opposite side of the tank. At this point, i'm pretty sure there are at least 2 of them. I tried that stupid trap, but only caught my cuke, no mantis! I am missing my cleaner shrimp (i'm guessing this is the first of many fatalities to come! :(  :( A 20$ shrimp, what's next! ? !

click, pop, click! Ah, get outta my tank you crappy shrimp!!!!!

Okay, i'll be trying the trap again this weekend, guess I can put it da*n near anywhere since the mantis seem to be all over the place! They just learned how to click apparently, I just started hearing this the last two days.

:uzi: :uzi: :uzi: :uzi:

sigh,
Angela.

sorry to hear about your unfortunate finds...
your predicament is something most people in this forum
can only dream about happening to them
good luck with getting the mantises out

Thanks for your sympathy!

Stop dreaming and order some Gulf-View Florida live rock. That was where my wonderful bugs came from:rolleyes:

Angela.

Hello,
Sorry about you situation. I had one that first ate my peppermint shrimp, I was like ok it's only A five dollar shrimp< if he touches my cleaner it will be war!!! Well a few weeks later sitting on the sand was what was left of my $20. cleaner shrimp and A $5 conch.
I took the 20 pound rock out and hoped he would crwal out looking for water, no such luck. After about an hour I figured desperat times call for desperate measures and did a fresh water dip of the rock. Well I got lucky and he came shooting out after only about 45 seconds. I am not saying to do this to your rock, I just figure that he was not going to get any more $30 meals too easaly. My rock is showing no signs of harm from it. Good luck in your hunt.

Parasite

Parasite, i'd do it if I thought there was only one. but at this point, i've seen mantis in at least 4 different rocks of large size, I have many corals mounted on them, and it would be like taking the tank down and putting it back up. Thanks, though. I'm just going to hope and pray that I catch one, then another, and then if there are three, another.

Angela.

Angela,

How long was it after you got your Gulf view rock that you began having mantis problems?

I ordered some gulf view rock partly with the hope of finding one to have as a pet. I kept it in my sump for a little while and observed it, then put it in my main tank. Maybe that was not such a good idea. I made sure all the rock was easily accessible where I placed it in case I noticed any undesirables were living there.

Laura, it took about a month for me to notice one. I just heard the clicking the other day, before it was just me seeing them now and again, but now they are annoying me, too! I've had the rock for maybe 4 months or so. Nice rock, but many undesireables. I've got an aiptasia somewhere, and can't find it anymore as i've moved the rock around. That plus the mantis makes me almost regret it. If the rock weren't so lively, and so colorful; i'd be ****ed; but alas, I am just ticked at the mantis, I still love the rock.

Good luck, guess I hope you find one, if that's what you want:rolleyes:

Gee I remember reading the thread when you had caught your thrid mantis, I really wouldn't have believed that there would be more comming.:eek2:

With any luck this one will be your last. Have you been able to identity which piece of rock the mantis[es] is[are] living in. Maybe you could put it in your sump and after a few days without food, you may be able to entice the mantis out with a tasty treat of some kind.

I feel your pain,
I aslo purchesed about 30 lbs of Gulf View rock very nice colors and life on it, but it also came with 1 to many mantis shrimp. I have already taken out 2 pieces of rock that I saw a shrimp run into and already found another one. I really don't want to take out more rock.

how did you finally rid your tank of this creature.mad2: any suggeston would be apprecieted

I'm with you all

I'm with you all

I've got those buggers in my tank also and am looking to eradicate them! I've made one of those "cut the plastic bottle and invert the top" traps to try to catch it.....but no such luck so far...will keep trying :(
