Just ordered Canon 50D

TS - bummer about the job man! My condolences.

TriggerHappyDude, the latest issue of Digital Photo Pro has a great article on dSLR video. Basically the 5DII kicks much butt in the video department compared to most consumer camcorders (bigger image sensor, better pixel quality), potentially better lens). I'm guessing the Canon Pro series though would not be considered consumer level camcorders.

I envy your ability to go straight to the 5DII. I have some L glass to pick up first.

Ok Reef Bass, I'm just now reading up on these lenses an stuff, lets all talk about the Canon Prime lenses aka L lenses...obviously I'm really new to a lot of the industry terms, so I need some guidance. They are the professional line and cost a lot of money right...then there are the Zoom lens line, more affordable right?

Oh and I know a lot of you are thinking, wow, a noobie and his first DSLR and he's going for a 5D Mark II, waste of money! I'm not expecting to buy this nice camera and "poof" awesome shots. I know there is a lot for me to learn about, and I plan to grow into this camera. I just want the ability to grow fast and big and have HD video with amazing IQ. So please don't think I'm dropping all this $$ only to expect amazing pictures "just because"...I know for a fact that won't happen. But I do plan to learn, and grow into the camera...those are my expectations.

LOL, no judgments here. Don't even sweat it, it's your money, it's your equipment, the hell with people who can't help but only criticize.

Prime doesn't mean "Primo". Canon's L designation does stand for "Luxury" though. They are the best of the best in their respective field and cover both primes and zooms.
If a lens is a prime, that simply means it can't zoom in or out. No more or less. The 100mm f/2.8 is a prime lens but not an L. The 85mm f/1.8 is another propular non-L prime.

If I was interested in a 5DmkII and some prime lenses, my first three purchases would be: 35mm f/1.4, 85f1.2, and the 135mm f/2.0.

Next I would work on the 24mm f/1.4, 70-200 (any of them) or if you want to keep it all prime the 200mm f/2 IS.
Then again you may never have a need to shoot telephoto, in which case I would go with a super wide angle.

I didn't mean that at above, just in case your getting that from me. I think it is a great idea! The 5DmkII is a hell of a camera. One of the best in the world!

Thanks TS...I wasn't saying you thought that, its just cause I know some are, or have and maybe got it from other threads and what not...just wanted everyone to know my goals.

Hey guys, hope I don't accidentally hijack the thread, the last couple of posts got me thinking, but I was wondering for full frame Nikons, does anyone know how to determine which lens will work in full frame? What's the formula?

Sorry aquariumclown I can't help with the Nikon question.

THD, +1 for the no judgement thing. If I could have swung the 5DII as my first dSLR I probably would have. Buy it. Love it. Learn.

Yeah really, you are getting the best equipment and hitting the ground running. If there is any judgment it's "wow this guy means business".

I'm excited to be joining the Canon world, I just hope I can get my wife as excited as I am and ok with the money we'll be spending...and hope I can make it worth the expense.

To be honest when I first started dipping my feet in the DSLR waters, I was heavy Nikon influenced, due to memories of the pictures my father took of me as a kid with his. And while the world will continue to argue Canon vs. Nikon, I learned quick from places like here that you can take all the opinions and advice from people on here (and other places) but in the end it comes down to what you want to do with the camera, the end result. And the research done by myself, leads me to think this 5D Mark II will be the best for me to accomplish my short and long term goals in the photography/video/memory creation world.

I tried to take emotions out of it, and maybe I did a good job of it, maybe I didn't...thats hard for me to determine.
