Just put a flame hawk in QT

Bent

I got nothin'
Welp, I done it.

The far away fish store had a Black Friday sale and had a flame hawk for 25 bucks. I bought him and put him in an empty QT.

I have almost 20 porcelain crabs and he will likely eat all of them, which given how cool this guy is, I don't really mind rolling the dice.

What a neat fish. He is sure chill and seems pretty confident and not afraid. I'm going to try to NOT feed him live feeders in hopes that he will leave my crabs alone. He is eating already and eating the NLS pellets and Frozen mysis. So fingers crossed!

Edit:
Well now that I have the flame hawk, I guess it's ok to pull the trigger at some point on the tuberculated angler if I can find one.

I've been eyeing one of those up since the beginning. Might pull the trigger soon, trying to find another rare fish before I get a hawk, as I only want 1 more fish... mayyybe 2 but that'd likely be a mate for my clownfish.

What's your planned QT procedure for this guy?

I love my flame hawk. We call him "Doug", in reference to one of my favorite far side cartoons. He is a model citizen who eats fish frenzy like it is going out of style!

I had one for 4-5 years until he disappeared checked both overflows and sump.......by far my favorite fish ive ever had.

I have one as well and have had him for over a year. He's a model citizen and eats reef frenzy, fish frenzy, mysis and pellets. My tank is fed 3x a day so I don't think I would ever have to worry about him eating my crustacians. That said, you would have to have really small crabs (no pun intentended) for him to get them in his mouth.

Not necessarily, mine has not cared about the pistol or peppermint shrimp in my tank.
Love mine, such a goofball.

Only hawkfish I'll add to a reef is a longnose or an unarmed perchlet I find the other Hawks too aggressive and not invert friendly

Flame Hawks are one of my favorite fish. I had one for years and always got a kick out of watching him move his eyes to follow stuff around. Really cool how they can rotate those eyes around the way that they do. I'll be adding one in the near future which will probably be my last fish addition.

You're gonna love that fish.

They are really cool fish, but can be jerks to smaller fish, added after them. I have snails and crabs and he doesn't even look their way at all. Of course, I feed my tank twice a day. I think you will be ok as long as all snail and crabs are in before him.

Congrats!

Flame hawks are good eaters. I have had my current one for 16 years and he was full grown when I got him, so they are long lived too.

I have had a coral banded shrimp with him gor 9 years, the shrimp was bigger than the hawk when I got it, so there was never much chance of it getting eaten.

I consider my hawk to be assertive, but not outright aggressive. If the hawk is getting persnickety, all that my one spot foxface needs to do is slightly flare it's spines (then go hide) to make the flame back off.

Good luck!

Kim

So far doing great! He's not very interested in the pellets though, but he is eating frozen pretty good.

Love mine as well. Had him about 2 months. He would probably eat pellets (I think I've seen him go after some), but when frozen is in the water, forget about it.

I would love to have one, just hate having a glass cover over my aquarium.I put the glass on top at lights out,and remove in the morning.
