Just set up my Quarantine Tank

Well I did it. I went out and bought the quarantine today and set it up. I put the Biospira in there to cycle it. It will be ready tommorrow pending water testing. It is a 10 gallon set-up from Walmart. Total cost was $60 with the Biospira. I am praying it all works out. Anyone ever put a 24 hr. cycling bacteria in their QT? I'm hoping that it does in fact cycle the tank. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No I didn't I started with new water. Should I have used my main tank water? I thought that that would have ick in it so thats why I didn't.

it doesnt matter if it has ick in the new water or not really- Arent you going to treat the fish AS IF he had ick already?

im just a newb- so dont follow my advice without double checking with someone else. I was told to use 10 gal of tank water to start a hospital tank for my yellow tang-

Main tank water has bacteria and other things that help keep the water higher quality- and to help the filters get started. I think you are supposed to change with fresh clean water though.

i am treating cause they do have ick. I put the Biospira in the quarantine tank for the beneficial bacteria that is needed. At least that is what I thought. Any more suggestions or comments on this are appreciated.

Well my fish made it through the night. Water levels are fine so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't lose any. I sure hope not after I spent $60 on the QT. Could of bought all new fish with that $.

For water changes what should I do? I did a 10% water change after my amonia was at .75 Nitrites at .25 and nitrates 0. Was this enough and how frequent should I do the changes? The Biospira sure didn't work too well. It said it would completely cycle the tank in 24 hours. I don't even think it worked at all.

I am not going to worry about the stats of my QT tank that much- there isnt much I can do about it.

I put about 1/2 a cup of my bio material out of my eheim canister into the penquin hang-on-back filter... and I did a 25% water change with clean brand new water today.

If I were you- I would have filled your QT up with main tank water (it helps a little... its conditioned from being in an active bio bed) From everything I have read- this is how you are supposed to do it.

What kind of fish are you treating again?

Here is my exact setup-

*10 gallon regular tank
*Penguin 100 with the charcoal ripped out of the filter (cut a slice and emptied it.
*A decent heater (set at 80 degrees)
*Filled tank initially with 10 gal of main tank water
*Bought a regular 10 gal light because he wasnt eating.
*Bought a thermometer and Sea Chem amonia alert monitor.
*Put 10 drops of "Organi-cure" copper treatment.. (worked so far)
* I put enough food for him to eat for a while and counted the pellets so I could tell if he ate

For the main tank-
*Hooked up a steralizer (turbo twist) in line with my canister filter.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR CHARCOAL out of both tanks.

Also- if your fish hasnt started eating- GET SOME GARLIC if you havent done so already. I found some at a specialty pet shop for around 10 bucks. (seen it as high as 15)

I usually get a small glass and put his food in it with about 3 tablespoons of tank water and then 1 drop of garlic.

Kinda makes the water smell funny- ohh well.
My tang is eating like a pig- more so then he did in the main tank.

Keep updating your thread-

Thanks, for your message.
I am treating a yellow tang, 1 ocellaris clown, 2 green chromis.
I did a 25% water change the second day and 40% the next day because amonia was at 1ppm.
I noticed that there are actually A LOT more white spots on my clown now. Anyone know why this would be?
Once again thanks in advance for any more replies.

I have added the copper to the water and also to every water change I have done per instructions on Coppersafe. I don't have a test kit yet to test for copper but will pick up this weekend. Then I will see what the levels are.

Well it looks like my clownfish might not make it. He looks real bad. He was the main reason that I put the fish in the tank because he was the one showing the spots. Even if he dies I will keep treating the fish and keep them out of the main aquarium for a month to let the ich die out. I am having trouble keeping the amonia low. I have been doing a 40% water change every day and after I change the water the amonia goes down to .5ppm from 1ppm. Anyone have any suggestions?

are they eating all the food? or does it sit at the bottom of the tank?

how high is the amonia in your fresh water?

Maybe get some amquel?

I just got rid of my FW tank. They are all eating but the clown was swimming sideways last night. Today he seems to be swimmming just of the bottom lathargicly.
What is amquel?
